Soundtrack for SHADOW OF DOUBT

Thank you Reading in Pajamas for hosting Julie Ann Walker and I today!! And what an excellent topic too!! I love music. It can lift and capture a mood so completely, I’m always on the lookout for songs for my stories. I’m not sure about you, but when I watch movies and shows, a well place song (be it orchestral or lyrical) I’m taken deeper into a scene. (I’ve also been ripped out of a scene when the musical director picks a song that really misses the mark, but we won’t concentrate on that.  <wink>)

In Shadow of Doubt, six years ago Cappy (commanding officer of Delta Squad, a black ops unit working for a clandestine agency) rescued Michelle (civilian) from the torturous clutches of a Colombian cartel, and now she explodes back into his life as a murder suspect. The sparks are explosive and consuming…and they’re also dangerous as hell. He doesn’t want to believe she did it, but with each new bit of evidence, he suspects her innocence may be a ruse—a beautiful trap set by a woman who has even more secrets yet to bare.

So…what type of soundtrack did I put together for Cappy and Michelle? Great question! Here ya go:

Tracy Chapman – “The Promise” This is Cappy and Michelle’s love song and an absolutely beautiful love song that couldn’t be more perfect for them. It’s a promise from one lover to the other that she’ll wait for him if he promises to return to her. These lyrics say so much about Cappy and Michelle finally getting a chance at happiness since they were robbed of it six years ago: “Remembering your touch, your kiss, your warm embrace. I’ll find my way back to you, if you’ll be waiting.”

Trapt – “Bring It” This is the kick-ass anthem for Shadow of Doubt! Interesting thing about this kick-ass song is that both sides can claim it. Cappy and Delta Squad can say it’s their anthem just as Griffin and Victor (our villains) could throw it back at Delta and the Senator.

Art of Dying – “Die Trying” This song captures Delta Squad’s commitment to getting the job done. It’s also Cappy’s personal anthem (I don’t want to spoil his story but let’s just say his family will never realize just what a sacrifice he made to keep them safe).

Keith Urban – “For You” Yup. This list wouldn’t be complete without this song. Keith wrote this for the Act of Valor movie and it moves me every time I hear…Every. Time.  He really captures the closeness and unity of a team forged by the life-and-death battles they face together—this applies to both Cappy and Michelle as well as Delta Squad.

Soundtrack for HOT AS HELL

Anyone who reads my books knows I love music.  My characters often quote it or reference it.  Classic rock, contemporary, pop, country, you name it.  I listen to it.  So it should come as no surprise that for every novel I write, I always come up with a soundtrack.  The same is true for my short story HOT AS HELL that appears in the WAY OF THE WARRIOR anthology.  (All author and publisher proceeds go to support the Wounded Warrior Project!)

HOT AS HELL stars Harper Searcy, a diplomatic secretary who works for the Ambassador to Pakistan.  When her embassy is bombed and overrun by extremists, the only man who can save her is Michael “Mad Dog” Wainwright, the Navy SEAL she’s determined to keep at arm’s length.  (Of course, she doesn’t, and smexy times commence.  Natch.)

Another great installment in the Black Knights Inc. story! Carlos is, well perfect and embodies all my points for a hot special ops member with a heart. Abby was so likeable and funny that it was a match made in heaven. I also need to mention that the fast paced heart stopping story started immediately and didn’t let up. This book was filled with humor, action, hotties, heroes and steamy romance. It hit all my checkboxes and then some.

Sniff…wuffle…baraaaaaag!

The elephant was getting frustrated at their continued ability to evade its searching trunk, and Abby could only pray the advice she’d read in those articles was correct. It was bad enough to think of dying at the hands of militants, but getting snuffed out by a pissed–off pachyderm?

PRESIDENT’S DAUGHTER DONE IN BY DUMBO…

Yep, she could see the headlines now. Definitely not the most respectable way to go and—-

Baraaaaaag! She jumped as another head–splitting trumpet blasted through the humid jungle air. Carlos tightened his arms around her, and she couldn’t help but think of what would have happened had the elephant not timed its arrival so precisely.

I mean, what the frickin’ sticks was I thinking? Oh, yes. She hadn’t been thinking. That was the whole problem. She’d simply been playing the part of Slutty McSlutNuggets, attempting to bang the one guy on the face of the planet she had no business banging.

Of course, in her own defense, it was a hard to say no to him when she’d been fantasizing about saying yes for most of her adult life. And then, as if that weren’t enough, there was the shock value of the thing. As in, Carlos Soto kissing her, caressing her, telling her to ride him and—-

She still had trouble believing it. Trouble believing he’d actually, factually wanted her. And, alrighty then, so maybe instead of seeing her as nothing more than that pesky undergrad who followed him and Rosa around like a lost puppy, she had, in fact, grown up in his eyes.

Still, you’re an idiot to have let things go so far, she admonished herself, even as she reveled in the feel of being held so tightly against his wide chest that she could hear his heartbeat thudding steadily beneath her ear. She wondered how it was he could remain so calm when they were ten seconds away from being skewered on a set of pointy ivory tusks. But then he moved his leg, just a little, and every thought in her head came to tire–squealing stop.

He was…hard.

Another great Black Knights Inc. novel. Through the series, Mac and Delilah have struggled with a long standing attraction and I loved how it finally exploded. This book is a fast paced and action filled thriller full of our favorite characters and their fun banter. The story flowed seamlessly and there was no way I could put it down. The romance was hot and sexy with enough tension to add another dimension to the danger surrounding them. I loved it and the only down side is I have to wait for the next installment.

A little about Julie…
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Julie grew up in a house full of women – she has three older sisters. As you can imagine, there was no lack of drama… or romance. Her mother enrolled her in a book club as soon as she began to read and it was the small spark that ignited her voracious appetite for the written word. Because of Julie’s early immersion in literature, she found writing came quite naturally. In high school, she won multiple writing contests and was the proud senior editor of The Tiger’s Tale – her school newspaper. During her college years, however, she longed for a challenge. “Reading and writing felt like second nature to me, so I looked for something to stretch my intellectual capabilities,” she recalls. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree, Julie began teaching advanced high school mathematics. “I loved working with the students and facing the challenges of the classroom, but I longed for the occasional snow day when I could race to the local book store, buy two or three new novels, and curl up in front of the fire to read for an entire day.” It wasn’t until a fortuitous move to Chicago that Julie once more returned to her first passion. “Thankfully, my husband – my own personal hero – encouraged my decision to write full time.” Now Julie lives on beautiful Lake Shore Drive with a view that sometimes competes with her deadlines. REVIEW:

Another fun ride with the Black Knights Inc, this time with Eve and Billy. The chemistry between them all is always fun and exciting. Not just in the smooth way they operate but their inner thoughts always make me chuckle. The action, humor and smoldering romance kept me on the edge of my seat and turning the pages well into the night. Eve and Billy were a great pairing and the glimpse into Mac and Delilah has me anxiously awaiting the next installment.

REVIEW:
I like that Vanessa pushes past her limited experience to bring him back. A small part of me thinks she cried too much, but it also showed how human she was. Rock is a strong sexy cajun! The action and suspense kept me riveted…I couldn’t put it down. I also love the humor and easy banter of the team. The sexual tension was great and worth the wait for them to finally get together. I love the BKI series and this one delivers.
