Synopsis

49792628-44F1-4ADE-816C-4F271C6A16FDRachel knew exactly what turning thirty would be like. She had a plan, after all. First college, then a climb up the professional ladder. Love, marriage, children. All of it was on the schedule.

The cheap Hollywood apartment wasn’t on the list. Neither was the string of heartbreaks. Or the effect her mother’s cancer had on her career.

It’s hard to stay practical and on point when everything takes a left turn.

Enter Sebastian, the nerd across the street. The boy she defended when he couldn’t defend himself. The best friend she promised she’d marry if life didn’t go according to plan.

Not only is he successful, confident, and gorgeous, but he also still has their handwritten marriage contract.

No one goes through with childhood wedding pacts.

That’s crazy.

But their families might just be crazy enough to rent a hall and set a date. All Rachel and Sebastian have to do is fall in love.

Excerpt

After I left her and CJ with Lucinda, I spent the weekly staff meeting wondering if Rachel was the same warrior I’d loved or if she was more the woman who’d held her laptop to her chest as if she needed protection.

I was obsessed.

I had to know.

Her text came in as I was leaving the meeting.

I need to check that we’re kidding

Before I could finish typing a response, I caught her coming out of the bathroom with her laptop under her arm.

Alone. Me and her. Nothing between us but the question of who we were and how we fit.

“Seb, I—”

She didn’t have a chance to finish. I crowded her back into the bathroom and locked the door behind us.

“Kidding about what?” I said.

“About getting married.”

“Why would that even be a question?”

“Our parents have been in negotiations about it.”

My mother couldn’t keep herself from talking if she tried, and I was her favorite subject.

“It might be a little soon for marriage, but—”

“Soon? I don’t like you seeing what I do for a living while you’re in a glass-walled office overlooking the ocean. I mean, I’m not marriage material, and the odds are that’s never going to change.”

“I don’t see why a date’s off the table.”

“Do you know what’s going to happen if we date?”

The list of possibilities was as long as my arm. I could have counted them off, from “We decide we hate each other” to “We end up in bed.” But I didn’t, because I was still trying to figure her out.

What did she want to hear?

With her wide eyes and parted lips, what did she want? Did she have a fondest wish where I was concerned? Was she leaning forward? Was her expression soft and yielding?

My mind spent too long deciding what to say, so my body spoke for me.

I kissed her hard and was met with teeth and stiff resistance. It was a kiss I’d wanted since I’d had hairless armpits and a voice somewhere in the low soprano range. I’d dreamed about it. Fantasized about it. Thought about it so hard in the middle of the night I could practically feel it.

But never, ever in my fantasies did she push me away so hard I fell back against a towel dispenser, watching her face twist into surprised rage as the machine spit out a ragged rectangle of brown paper.

“That was—”

“Messed up. I know.”

“Then why? What is wrong with you?”

She was livid, just like she would have been. Just like she should have been.

The tiger within Rachel was in there, and my attempt to tease her out had probably alienated her. She’d be right to never speak to me again.

“I’m sorry,” I said with my hand on the door lock. “I misread you. It won’t happen again.”

I started to open the door, but she held it closed.

“If we date, my mother’s going to get her hopes up that I’m going to settle down. And I’m sorry, Seb, but if we break up while she’s in chemo, it’s going to crush her.”

“You don’t even know if she’s sick again.”

“You’re right.” She pointed a rigid finger at me as if I were her mother. “I’m going to make her tell me.”

“You’re really beautiful when you’re telling it like it is.”

She slid her hand off the door. Having been called out, the warrior was sent into hiding.

No. I wouldn’t accept that. I wouldn’t allow it.

“Let’s just go out and catch up,” I said. “Saturday.”

“Can’t. Saturday’s the soonest I can talk to Mom.”

I unlocked the door. “I’m sorry about . . . the thing.”

“Kissing me?”

“No, wasting paper towels. Of course kissing you.”

“Next time, give a girl a little warning.”

Next time? Her eyes darted to the door. Was she calculating the distance to her getaway? Or making sure it was closed?

“How about now?” I asked.

“Now what?”

“Fair warning. Now.”

I stepped a little closer and put my hands on her arms. Not right away. I let them hover an inch away before touching her to give her the chance to move away. A chance I was sure she’d take.

“Seb, really?”

But she didn’t move away.

Not this time. When I laid my hands on her biceps, she leaned in to me just a little. I smelled the floral lotion on her skin and a hint of cool water on her breath.

“Really.” I slid the laptop from her arms and placed it on the counter. “This is your warning.”

You’re doing this. I cannot believe you’re doing this.

“It doesn’t feel like a warning,” she said, and again—I noted—she didn’t move away.

“Flashing red lights.” My lips brushed her cheek, heading for her mouth. She felt better than I ever imagined. “A buzzer, maybe.”

“Just a kiss?” she asked, her lips moving against mine.

Before I could consummate what she was agreeing to, I was smacked by a swinging door.

“Oh!” CJ said. “I’m sorry! I was looking for you.”

Rachel snatched up her laptop and walked out. CJ raised an eyebrow with good reason, since I was in the ladies’ room. I left, and we all gathered in the hall.

Awkward.

“Well,” Rachel said. “Thanks for showing us your tedious financial-sector company.”

“Thank you for coming,” I said and let them walk away. I could have done or said much more, but not without getting her into trouble. She glanced back at me when they turned the corner, as if she wanted to make sure I was still there.

Please introduce your newest release.

Only Ever You is about a girl who planned for everything but never got what she hoped for, and a dweeb who hoped he’d to marry the girl, but never planned for it.

Rachel and Sebastian have an interesting history. They were friends as kids, but have lost touch as adults…

They’re really strangers when they reunite at 30, but they’re burdened by what they think they know about each other. Sebastian was supposed to be an artist and Rachel was supposed to be a screenwriter. They have to shake all that stuff loose before they can see each other. When they do, they’re strangers.

I think attraction between strangers is real. Sexual heat is real. But “hearts and flowers” are earned. (I know that sounds like I’m your dad telling you to mow lawns, but that’s where the magic is. Not the lawns.) In the time just before you’re struck by lightning there’s a real electricity. It’s pure potential and anything can go wrong. It’s the best thing ever.

When they were kids they made up a ‘contract’ to get married at 30—which is pretty much panned when they do meet up and have the most awkward first kiss EVER. How do they overcome such an incredibly uncomfortable situation?

They overcome it by running away!

Sebastian is thinking “now or never” because he thinks Rachel’s never going to think he’s any cooler than when she sees him in the office of his own company. And she isn’t ready because her whole idea of herself is tied up in what a failure she is. Neither one of them is feeling good enough about themselves to have a really hot first kiss, which is the same reason they’re not ready to get married.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

86C83BDF-B847-4BC9-A4EE-91E0A5391DF6From New York Times bestselling author Emily March comes Jackson, the newest novel in the critically acclaimed Eternity Springs series.

Sometimes it takes a new beginning

Caroline Carruthers thinks she buried her dreams along with the love of her life…until a stranger named Celeste dares her to chase a dream all on her own. Moving to Redemption, Texas, is chapter one in Caroline’s new life story. Opening a bookstore is the next. Finding love is the last thing on her mind as she settles into this new place called home. But when she meets a handsome, soulful man who’s also starting over, all bets are off.

to reach a happily-ever-after

Jackson McBride came to Redemption looking only to find himself, not someone to love. Ever since his marriage ended, he’s been bitter. Sure, he used to believe in love—he even has the old song lyrics to prove it—but the Jackson of today is all business. That is, until a beautiful young widow who’s moved to town inspires a change of heart. Could it be that the myth of Redemption’s healing magic is true…and Jackson and Caroline can find a second chance at a happy ending after all?

Donna review 4.5 stars

I loved this spin-off from the Eternity Springs Series, it was the perfect segue and kept me wanting more. If you’ve read the Eternity Springs books, you know that Celeste is like an earth-bound-fairy-godmother. She wove her magic and put two hurting souls together so they could lean on each other in writing the next chapters of their lives. Jackson and Caroline were likeable from the start, making my heart smile as they moved from strangers, to friends, to lovers. Their friends and family brought banter to a fun level, making me want to move into town and shove my way in. No danger, no hot and heavy sex….just a sweet love story that still has me smiling.

1. You wrote a book! That’s pretty awesome. Why don’t you tell us a bit about what inspired Jackson and the rest of the books in the Eternity Springs world?

The saying “Write what you know” says it all in my case. I’m a small-town girl and my family and friendships are center to my world. I write about love and family and friendships. I have roots in both the Colorado Rockies and the Texas Hill Country, so it was natural for me to set Eternity Springs and Redemption there. The idea for JACKSON grew out of my interest in the music currently being written and performed in Texas. I’ve always thought singer/songwriters are romantic figures so I was excited to create a hero with this background. Unfortunately, I’m not a musician and I’m definitely not a singer, but I am creative so it was fun for me to explore that aspect of a character.

2. Introduce us to your main character!

Okay. Well, Americana singer/songwriter Jackson McBride is a bit damaged when the book begins. His famous, talented and wealthy ex has won a custody battle that severely limits his access to his six-year-old daughter, so Jackson goes home to the Texas Hill Country to nurse his broken heart. He finds solace in Enchanted Canyon hiking the trails with the dog he rescues and working to bring a historic dance hall back to life. The last thing he expects is to find love again with a woman whose heart is as battered as his own.

3. Walk us through a day in the life of Emily March.

Ready to be bored? Now that my daughter’s and niece’s weddings are behind me—they consumed me for months—I’m boring and happy about it. I split my time between Fort Worth where we have a condo downtown in a 1930’s passenger train station and our lake house in the Texas Hill Country. I recently gave up my office in town because I’m spending more and more time at the lake. My husband also offices out of our condo, so on days when we are both working in town, I’ve started riding the new TexRail train that runs from our building to DFW airport. It’s quiet and comfortable and I don’t have Internet to distract me. And at $5 a day, it’s much cheaper than office rent. 🙂 When I’m at the lake I’m either working or doing yard work. My new favorite toy is my power washer.

4. Lots of aspiring authors out there. Any advice for them?

I’ve always thought that one of the most important things you can do for your writing is to read. And read. And read some more. Read across genres. You absorb so much about pacing and plotting and character development when you read. Plus, you get to READ! 🙂

5. How is the Jackson trilogy different than your other series?

I don’t think it’s necessarily different from the rest of the Eternity Springs series. I write about love and family and friendship—that doesn’t change. Readers will still see old friends from Eternity Springs and a few scenes in JACKSON are set in Colorado. What’s new is we get to spend some time in the Texas Hill Country and meet a few new characters—Celeste’s cousin, Angelica, for example.

6. I know asking someone’s all-time favorite book is a loaded question so what’s your current favorite read?

I’m a big fan of Patricia Brigg’s Mercy Thompson series and I’m reading her latest right now, STORM CURSED.

7. Alright, the ultimate question: why should we read your book?

My goals as a writer are to touch a reader’s heart, to entertain her and make her laugh, to maybe cry a little and sigh with satisfaction upon reaching the end. With JACKSON, I believe I’ve achieved those goals.

8. Describe yourself in 3 words.

Family. Family. Family. 🙂

9. What is your most embarrassing memory?

Walking out of the junior high school cafeteria in seventh grade, not realizing that my very short dress—it was the 70’s—had gotten hung up in my underwear and I inadvertently flashed my rear end to the entire cafeteria—including the tables where the football players sat. Thinking about it even today gives me the hives.

10. Favorite quote or scene you wrote in JACKSON?

I love the ending. Jackson is a songwriter who has lost his music and when he finds it again…the song he sings to Caroline…just makes me melt.

11. What is one piece of advice you would tell everyone?

Call your mother.

12. What inspired you to become a writer?

I’ve always loved to read, so that is part of it, but my father was my primary inspiration. He was a fabulous storyteller. I grew up sitting at his feet and listening to him tell stories about his youth and his experiences in Europe during World War II. Listening to him tell his stories was my favorite thing to do. I didn’t inherit his talent for verbal storytelling, but I think I learned from him how to tell a good story on the page.

13. Do you have any interesting writing quirks or habits?

Like I mentioned before, I’m pretty boring. My perks and habits are always evolving. The train writing thing is new for me. I usually write on a laptop and edit on a desktop. I listen to movie soundtracks when I write and always finish a book with The Last of the Mohicans.

14. What has been one of the most surprising things you’ve learned as a published author

I’m always a little surprised and honored that readers are excited to meet me. Like I said…I’m a boring person.

15. What is your favorite state to visit?

Colorado, of course, because I must keep returning to Eternity Springs. 🙂

16. What are hobbies or interests do you have?

We are lake people, so I love waterskiing and boating and fishing. As I write this we’ve just finished Memorial Day weekend at the lake, so I sort of feel like chief cook and sheet-and-towel washer, too. I love, love, love hosting big holiday gatherings of family and friends at the lake house, but I will admit I do tire of the mountain of laundry in the aftermath.

17. Can you tell us about what’s coming up next after this for you writing wise?

I’m writing Tucker’s story. Fun fact for this—as part of my research I attended a survivalist training school for a weekend. I searched long and hard to find one where I could return to town to spend the night in a comfy hotel rather than sleep on the ground—I’m only willing to go so far for my art. I did learn to start a friction fire, though, something I’me VERY proud of. 🙂

18. How can readers connect with you online?

My website is http://www.emilymarch.com. I’m active on Facebook. My Facebook page is http://www.facebook.com/emilymarchbooks. You can also reach me by email at emily@emilymarch.com.

Interview with Sherrilyn Kenyon

384CD17F-8201-49B0-BB97-7206B4B335C2

Donna and I got to do a Skype call interview with Sherrilyn Kenyon on 8/25 and ask her some of our questions and yours. We had so much talking to her. Below is the audio file and a written summary. -Cori

~*~*~*~

Sherrilyn Kenyon Interview Audio

~*~*~*~

Sherrilyn Kenyon Interview Summary

Is Urian’s book going to be as emotional for me as Acheron and Styxx’s books? No, because Urian was loved by his father and family. He isn’t as tragic a figure as those characters were, although his life wasn’t easy, Sryker was a fierce and loving father.

What is next for the Dark Hunters? Sherrilyn said that it will be Xander’s book. She had originally planned to write his around the time she wrote Wren’s book, but other stories needed told and he had to wait. Now he will have his time.

When is the Dark-Hunter Chronicles of Nick going to overlap? There has been an overlap already. There have been scenes in DH when Ash talks about the timeline/ past changing and someone playing with it. The plan was for the CON Series to always happen with the DH series. Readers just didn’t know it.

Movie / TV news will be announced at New York Comic Con

What’s going to going happen in Shadows of Fire Series? is Nick going to be a big part of that too? Yes, but she has to be careful because it’s set in the future with the second generation of DH and some things she doesn’t want to reveal in Shadows of Fire Series when the DH series is still on going.

Most readers have a favorite character or group that gets them excited for a story does Sherrilyn have one any as well?  Of course she loves all her characters and there are no favorites. Cori commented that Donna is obsessed with Thorn. Sherrilyn seemed to think that wasn’t a wise choice as you never knew which way he would turn and if you get too close he might just stab you. Donna rather liked that about him.

Message from Cori: It was so much fun taking to Sherrilyn Kenyon and the ultimate fan dream come true for me. She was so nice and it felt like Donna and I were just talking to one of our girlfriends so if you listen to the audio we go off on other stuff besides books lol. She truly is the Queen of paranormal romance and it amazes me how she keeps track of all the multiple characters and storylines going on in her head. I love all of her series and highly recommend them.

Message from Donna: It was such a treat to talk with Sherrilyn Kenyon on Saturday. She is such a delight and put my nerves at ease immediately as our conversation wandered from books to kids and dust-bunnies. I am awed that she is a truly personable person while having a brain capable of holding complex worlds, changing timelines and multitudes of interesting characters into a type of convoluted DNA strand. I would be on overload! Our chat was a dream come true.

Q: Beautiful cover! What’s the inspiration for it? Can you tell us a little about how it plays into the plot of the book?

A: The art started with the title on this book. It’s a story about recovery and rebirth, so we wanted to show a scene that reflects the hope and renewal of spring. It took a few tries to get just the right mix of snow and flowers, but I’m thrilled with how the cover turned out.

Q: What inspired the plot of this book?

A: Eternity Springs is where broken hearts go to heal, and every book explores some aspect of emotional healing. The title, THE FIRST KISS OF SPRING, came to me first, so I set about developing a plot that fit the idea of rebirth and renewal.

Q: How do you make your characters, plots and scenes so vivid? Do you plan everything out in advance or do you let your writing surprise you?

A: When I’m writing, character development and scene setting comes naturally to me. I truly lose myself in the story world—that’s the joy of writing for me. Since I’m fifteen books into the series, the world is well established and defined. My problem is remembering what I’ve written about the world in the past! To help, I keep a detailed “bible” about the people and places in Eternity Springs.

I start with a bare bones plot that always changes substantially during the writing of the book.

Q: I have also read A Stardance Summer and I love your writing. Do you have any tips for those of us who would someday like to publish what they write and improve their writing? Any tips for romance writers especially?

A: My number one piece of advice is to read, read, read, and then read some more. I think writers can absorb a lot about pacing and plot and characterization from reading. I think you should read a variety of fiction, too, not only romance. Every genre has something to teach you.

Q: What’s your favorite scene in this book? Why?

A: I love the meet in THE FIRST KISS OF SPRING. It’s different from anything I’ve written before and that’s always fun.

Q: If you could travel anywhere where would it be?

A: My husband and I have a big anniversary this year, so we spent some time discussing our dream trip. After much debate, we decided that instead of taking one long, exotic trip we’d take a series of shorter, domestic trips throughout the year. So, my “anywhere” is somewhere in the U.S that I’ve always wanted to visit but for one reason or another haven’t. For example, one of our trips is to Yellowstone.

Q: Any plans for more books? What are you working on currently? We’d love to read more from you!

A: I have just turned in the next book in the Eternity Springs series, THE CHRISTMAS WISHING TREE, which comes out October 2nd. So, right now, I’m on vacation—and getting ready to take one of those anniversary trips.

Publication Date: May 30, 2017

Genre: Historical Romance

Synopsis

from duke dawn mm cEva Leigh launches a seductive new series that sizzles with the dark secrets of London’s underworld…

Years ago, the Duke of Greyland gave his heart—and a princely sum of money—to a charming, destitute widow with unparalleled beauty. But after one passionate night, she slipped from his bed and vanished without a trace. And just when he’s given up hope of ever seeing her again, Greyland finds her managing a gaming hell. He’s desperate to have her… until he discovers everything about his long-lost lover was a lie.

In truth, Cassandra Blake grew up on the streets, picking pockets to survive. Greyland was a mark—to be fleeced and forgotten—but her feelings for the duke became all too real. Once he learns of her deception, however, the heat in his eyes turns to ice. When her business partner absconds with the gaming hell proceeds—leaving unsavory investors out for blood—Cassandra must beg the man she betrayed for help.

Greyland wants compensation, too, and he’ll assist her under one condition: she doesn’t leave his sight until her debts are paid. But it’s not long before the real Cassandra—the smart, streetwise criminal—is stealing his heart all over again.

London, England
1817

A woman laughed, and Alexander Lewis, Duke of Greyland felt the sound like a gunshot to his chest.
It was a very pleasant laugh, low and musical rather than shrill and forced, yet it sounded like The Lost Queen’s laugh. Alex could not resist the urge to glance over his shoulder as he left the Eagle chophouse. He’d fancifully taken to calling her The Lost Queen, though she was most assuredly a mortal woman. Had she somehow appeared on a busy London street at dusk? The last time he’d seen her had been two years ago, in the spa town of Cheltenham, in his bed, asleep and naked.
The owner of the laugh turned out to be a completely different woman—brunette rather than blonde, petite and round rather than lithe and willowy. She caught Alex staring and raised her eyebrows. He bowed gravely in response, then continued toward the curb.
Night came on in indigo waves, but the shops spilled golden light in radiant patches onto the street.
The hardworking citizens of London continued to toil as the upper echelons began their evening revelries. Crowds thronged the sidewalk, while wagons, carriages, and people on horseback crammed the streets. A handful of pedestrians recognized Alex and politely curtsied or tipped their hats, murmuring, “Good evening, Your Grace.” Though he was in no mood for politeness, responsibility and virtue were his constant companions—had been his whole life—and so rather than snapping, “Go to the devil, damn you!” he merely nodded in greeting.
He’d done his duty. He’d been seen in public, rather than disappearing into the cavernous chambers of his Mayfair mansion, where he could lick his wounds in peace.
The trouble with being a duke was that he always had to do his duty. “You are the pinnacle of British Society,” his father had often said to him. “The world looks to you for guidance. So you must lead by example. Be their True North.”
This evening, before dining, Alex had taken a very conspicuous turn up and down Bond Street, making certain that he was seen by many consequential—and loose-lipped— figures in the ton. Word would soon spread that the Duke of Greyland was not holed up, sulking in seclusion. His honor as one of Society’s bulwarks would not be felled by something as insignificant as his failed marriage suit to Lady Emmeline Birks. The Dukes of Greyland had stood strong against Roundheads, Jacobites, and countless other threats against Britain. One girl barely out of the schoolroom could hardly damage Alex’s ducal armor.
But that armor had been dented by The Lost Queen. Far deeper than he would have expected.
Standing on the curb, he signaled for his carriage, which pulled out of the mews. He tugged on his spotless gloves as he waited and adjusted the brim of his black beaver hat to make certain it sat properly on his head. “Always maintain a faultless appearance,” his father had reminded him again and again. “The slightest bit of disorder in your dress can lead to rampant speculation about the stability of your affairs. This, we cannot tolerate. The nation demands nothing less than perfection.”
Alex’s father had been dead for ten years, but that didn’t keep the serious, sober man’s voice from his mind. It was part of him now—his role as one of the most powerful men in England and the responsibilities that role carried with it. Not once did he ever let frivolities distract him from his duties.
Except for one time . . .
Forcing the thought from his mind, Alex looked impatiently for his carriage. Just as the vehicle pulled up, however, two men appeared and grabbed his arms on each side.
Alex stiffened—he did not care for being touched without giving someone express permission to do so. People on the street also did not normally seize each other. Was it a robbery? A kidnapping attempt? His hands curled instinctively into fists, ready to give his accosters a beating.
“What’s this?” one of the younger men exclaimed with mock horror. “Have I grabbed hold of a thundercloud?”
“Don’t know about you,” the other man said drily, “but I seem to have attached myself to an enormous bar of iron. How else to explain its inflexibility?” He tried to shake Alex, to little avail. When he wanted to be, Alex was absolutely immovable.
Alex’s fingers loosened. He tugged his arms free and growled, “That’s enough, you donkeys.”
Thomas Powell, the Earl of Langdon and heir to the Duke of Northfield, grinned, a flash of white in his slightly unshaven face. “Come now, Greyland,” he chided. A hint of an Irish accent made his voice musical, evidence of Langdon’s early years spent in his mother’s native County Kerry. “Is that any way to speak to your oldest and dearest friends?”
“I’ll let you know when they get here.” Alex scowled at Langdon, then at Christopher Ellingsworth, who only smirked in response.
Alex took a step toward his carriage, but Ellingsworth deftly moved to block his path, displaying the speed and skill that had served him well when he’d fought on the Peninsula.
“Where are you running off to with such indecorous haste?” Ellingsworth pressed. He held up a finger. “Ah, never tell me. You’re running back to the shelter of your Mayfair cave, to growl and brood like some big black bear in a cravat.”
“You know nothing,” Alex returned, despite the fact that Ellingsworth had outlined his exact plans for the rest of the night.
Ellingsworth looked at Langdon with exaggerated pity. “Poor chap. The young Lady Emmeline has utterly shattered his heart.”
Alex shouldered past Ellingsworth, only to have Langdon move to stand in his way.
“My heart is not shattered because of Lady Emmeline,” Alex snapped. At least that much was the truth.
“But why shouldn’t your heart be strewn in pieces throughout Regent’s Park?” Langdon mused. “You courted the young lady for several months, and you told Ellingsworth and I that you’d already received her father’s grateful acceptance of a marriage offer.”
“She never agreed to anything,” Alex said flatly.
“A modest girl, that Lady Emmeline.” Ellingsworth nodded with approval. “She wouldn’t have said yes right away. They never do. Nothing to be alarmed by.”
“How would you know?” Alex’s voice was edged. Ellingsworth had little experience with offering for ladies’ hands, committed as he was to a life of reckless pleasure.
Langdon added, “It’d be unseemly for an earl’s daughter to eagerly snap up a marriage proposal the moment it was offered.”
Alex scowled. Despite the fact that, at thirty-eight, he was sixteen years her senior, they would suit well as a wedded couple. Lady Emmeline had been perfectly trained in the responsibilities of an aristocratic wife. Though he wished she stated her own opinion rather than constantly agreeing with him, there were worse faults one could find in a prospective bride.
They could marry at Christmas, eight months from now. It would be a small but elegant wedding, followed by a lavish breakfast and a wedding journey in the Lake District. And then, if everything went well, in less than a year, Alex and Lady Emmeline might welcome their first child—hopefully a boy so the line would be secure. It would’ve been precisely the sort of match Alex’s
father would have approved, considering Lady Emmeline’s faultless background and her spotless reputation.
“Look at him now, mooning away,” Langdon sighed, smugly thwarting Alex’s attempts to step around him. “He looks poorly.”
It would be bad form to knock his friend to the ground. Damn the social niceties that dictated a man couldn’t punch another without repercussions.
“Perhaps he should be bled,” Ellingsworth suggested with his habitual smirk. It was his constant companion since returning from the War, as if he refused to take anything seriously.
“I am perfectly well.” Alex looked back and forth between these two rogues whom he called friends. “No need to call for a quack.”
“He’s already had an amputation,” Langdon noted, raising a brow as he always did. “One prospective bride—gone.” He made a sawing motion at his ankle, as if cutting the shackles of matrimony.
Alex glanced down at his own lower leg, as if he could see the invisible links that might have bound him to Lady Emmeline. He’d come so close to becoming a married man and sharing the rest of his life with one woman—the faultless duke his father had bred him to be. It hardly mattered that Alex felt nothing for the gel other than a sense of distant respect. She would have made a fine duchess.
“We were at White’s yesterday when we heard about what happened,” Langdon said with disapproval. “Didn’t even tell your two closest friends that Lady Emmeline had run off with a cavalry officer. No, we had to hear it from Lord Ruthven, of all people.”

Describe yourself in five words or less. Feminist who believes in HEA.

Can you tell us a little about your book? Alexander Lewis, the Duke of Greyland, met a beautiful, destitute widow and lost his heart to her—but she disappeared. Two years later, the duke finds Cassandra again as she manages a gaming hell. Alex is prepared to offer Cassandra everything, even his name, until he discovers a gut-wrenching truth. Cassandra is not a genteel widow. She’s a confidence artist, targeting aristocratic men with her swindles. Heartbroken and furious, Alex wants nothing to do with her. Fate steps in when Cassandra’s business partner vanishes with the profits from the gaming hell, leaving Cassandra at the mercy of dangerous people. In desperation, Cassandra turns to Alex for help. Delving into London’s underworld, they form an uneasy partnership as they track down her partner. Yet the passion they’d shared two years ago is nothing compared to their desire now. Can Alex protect himself, or will Cassandra once again steal his heart?

How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story? As with my Wicked Quills of London series, I enjoy having characters that aren’t necessarily part of Regency High Society. I’m fascinated by confidence artists—their methods, their motivations—and thought it would be exciting to see what would happen when England’s most morally upright duke falls for a morally ambiguous woman.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book? Exploring the other, shadier side of Regency London was a lot of fun. That time period is so rich with possibility, with so many people of many different walks of life all living in one place. I also really enjoyed having Alex learn to lighten up a little and free his wild side. Nothing like a buttoned-up guy who loosens the reins of his control. (It turns out Alex likes talking dirty!)

What do you like to do when you aren’t writing? Baking is one of my favorite things to do, because, unlike writing, you finish with a tangible result. Plus, you make something delicious. I read, of course, and spend too much time on the internet. When I’m feeling industrious, I crochet little soft toys called amigurumi and give them to friends.

A la Twitter style, please describe your book in 140 characters or less. Uptight duke. Beautiful con artist. Trouble and sexytimes ahead.

Tell us all about your main characters—who are they? What makes them tick? Most importantly, what one thing would they need to have with them if stranded on a desert isle? 😉

Alex has been born and bred to be a duke. Everything he does falls within a strict code of responsibility and honor. He doesn’t fully understand degrees of morality. Having a brief, passionate affair with Cassandra two years ago was entirely out of character. Once she comes back into his life, he’s shocked and infuriated to learn that he was just another mark. He’s ready to write Cassandra off as a cold, calculating criminal—despite the fact that he still desires her. If Alex was stranded on a desert island, he’d need his walking stick. He doesn’t have an injury that requires it, but a walking stick can be a useful took for building shelters, using to hunt for food, or making it into a sundial. He’s a no-nonsense, practical guy!

Cassandra grew up alone on the rough streets of London. She had to learn how to survive in a brutal world. With no one to take care of her, she turned to crime as a way to keep from starving. Her life changed when she met a man who taught her the art of pretending to be a gentlewoman while swindling members of the gentry. Instead of sleeping on filthy hay, now she could rest her head on feather mattresses, and she had as much as she wanted to eat. She always thought of aristocrats as targets to be swindled, until she met Alex, who treated her with dignity and kindness. With Alex, she broke her rule of never sleeping with a mark, and later fled out of self-preservation. Cassandra is street wise, self-sufficient, and has learned to view everything with suspicion. Only Alex sneaks past her defenses. If she was stuck on a desert island, she’d be practical and take a small knife (which could also be used as a lock pick if she found buried treasure).

Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers? Find a way to sit down in front of your computer and just start writing. Even when you doubt yourself, you have to keep going. It’s trite, but books really don’t write themselves. And also, enjoy the process of writing simply to write. Success isn’t a guarantee so we have to love what we do.

Publication Date: February 21, 2017

Synopsis

img_6762When Hailey Harper left her family farm to enroll in veterinary school, she had a plan: keep her head down, ace her classes, and most importantly… don’t upset the uncle paying her tuition. Translation? Don’t piss off his dramatic, self-absorbed daughter, Danica, even if she’s a nightmare to live with.

Falling in love with her cousin’s rock star ex-boyfriend was definitely not part of the plan.

As the drummer of a now-famous rock band, Mike Madden could have any girl he wants. He’s sweet, funny, romantic, talented–and the only guy that’s ever made Hailey’s heart do cartwheels in her chest. The more she gets to know him, the harder she falls, but Hailey knows they can never be more than friends… because Danica wants him back, and she’ll fight dirty to win.

Mike is falling for Hailey too, but Danica’s threats and his rock star life-music video shoots, international tours, obsessed fans-could tear them apart before they’ve even begun. Hailey isn’t sure she’s the one for him, but Mike’s waited years for a girl like her… and he’ll do anything to prove it.

My writing process always involves a lot of deleted scenes, but this is part of one that I hated to let go. In early versions of my first draft, I had Hailey’s friends, Rowan and Dee (the heroines in MAYHEM and RIOT), meddle much more to get Hailey and Mike together (so that Mike would ditch his horrible ex-girlfriend, Danica, who only wanted him for his newfound fame). Ultimately, I scaled back the outside interference since I wanted Hailey and Mike’s relationship to develop much more organically, but I have to admit those interfering scenes were pretty fun (and hilarious!) to write!
In this scene, which would have happened early in the book, the entire cast of characters is at a dance club, and everyone’s favorite meddler, Dee, is trying to convince Hailey to dance with Mike.

~*~*~*~

DELETED SCENE

“You should dance with Hailey, Mike.”
“Excuse me?” Danica snaps, and Dee rolls her eyes.
“Oh come on, Dan. Don’t tell me you’re so insecure that you won’t let him dance with your own cousin.”
Mike plants a reassuring kiss on Danica’s cheek and teases, “I’m sure I’m not even her type.”
And I don’t know what comes over me—probably the three and a half neon-pink drinks I’ve had tonight—but I open my mouth and say, “Right. Because ‘hot rock star’ isn’t a universal type or anything.”
I’m not sure whose eyes go wider—Dee’s, Rowan’s, or Mike’s—but the moment the words fall out of my mouth, I clamp my jaw closed and tense all over. I’m pretty sure I’m about to do that terrified goat thing—where my muscles all seize up and I flop to the side. My brain is scrambling for some way to recover from the nine layers of awkwardness I just careened into, when Joel bursts out laughing. He throws his mohawked head back, and just before I goat-flop onto the floor, he grabs my hand and yanks me toward the crowd. “Come on, Hailey, I’ll dance with you!”

Excerpt

At a door near the back corner of the room, my fun-loving cousin marches right up to the first security guard she sees, who also happens to be approximately five zillion times her size, with muscles made of stone and a face to match. “Who do I need to talk to to get backstage?”

At her bossy tone, Muscle-man lifts an eyebrow. “The Easter Bunny?”

“Excuse me?”

“No one’s allowed backstage.” The arms he crosses over his chest warn that he isn’t messing around.

“I’m with Mike,” Danica lies, and after studying her for a moment, Muscle-man laughs.

“Sure you are.”

“I am!”

When Muscle-man just smiles at her like she’s a petulant child, Danica resorts to acting like one. She demands to see his boss and threatens to get him fired. When that doesn’t work, she resorts to curse words. And when those have no effect, all hell breaks loose.

She’s torpedoing her finger into his chest and shouting something about his inbred gene pool when I try to pull her away from him. But Danica is on a rampage, and all my efforts get me is a hard shove that nearly knocks me on my ass. At five-feet tall, one hundred and three pounds, I’m not exactly in a position to throw my weight around, and I don’t make a second attempt to try. I’m rubbing my tender collarbone when the security guy picks my assailant up off her feet, and I helplessly follow as he carries her outside.

After serving as an armrest for a sweaty gigantor inside the club, after obliterating my eardrums in front of the world’s biggest speakers, after getting knocked around like a bratty child’s toy all night, all I want is to take a hot shower and crawl into my own bed to sleep for a week straight. Instead, I stand on the sidewalk outside of Mayhem, frowning at the furious look on Danica’s face as she glares at the big metal door the security guard just shut behind him.

She came here for one thing, and I know she’s not leaving until she gets it.

“You didn’t have to push me,” I mutter, and her eyes flare.

“You should’ve had my back!”

“And done what? Bite his ankles?”

In her four-inch wedge boots, Danica towers above me. I stare way up at her, trying to remember the girl who played dolls with me up in my parents’ hay loft. But she’s lost somewhere behind fake lashes and fifteen years of getting everything she’s wanted.

“You’ve been nothing but a bitch this whole time,” she snaps, and I sigh and pull my shirt away from my skin again, letting the cool night air dry the sweat beaded on my lower back. There’s no point in trying to defend myself. In Danica’s mind, she’s always simultaneously the victim and the hero, and as her non-rent-paying roommate, I’ve learned to just accept that.

I appreciate everything she’s done for me. I do. If she hadn’t been the little voice in her father’s ear, persuading him to fund my schooling and begging him to make some calls to get us enrolled, I’d be home mucking stalls, not following my dreams. Her dad pays all of my bills—my tuition, my insurance, my living expenses, all of them. And while I suspect that Danica’s sudden interest in my life wasn’t entirely genuine—she’d flunked out of college before, and I think her dad was only open to the idea of her going back if she was living off-campus with a responsible roommate, AKA her boring farm-girl cousin—I owe her. I owe her the roof over my head and the massive student loan debt I don’t have.

When her phone rings, she wastes no time dismissing me to answer it. “Katie?” she says. “Guess who just got kicked out of the fucking club. Yes! Because this asshole bouncer wouldn’t let me backstage.” She gives me a dirty look. “Just stood there doing nothing. I know! No, she didn’t even try. Getting a place with her was stupid.”

An icy chill slithers up the back of my neck, and I chew the inside of my lip. Because of my uncle’s insistence that I focus all of my energy on school right now instead of also finding a part-time job, I have no income. My only “job” is not pissing off his daughter. And it’s a job that I’m learning I am very, very bad at.

With my mouth shut, I slink away before my mere presence can enrage Danica further, and when she asks where I’m going, I make up the lamest excuse ever. “To read this flyer over here.”

Okay, first thing’s first: Can you tell us someone famous who looks like your hero, Mike Madden, so we can look up some eye candy?

Tyler Seguin!! He’s a Dallas Stars hockey player—and ridiculously hot. A few readers told me he was their “Mike,” and he’s very close to how I picture him too! His body, his eyes, his smile…. *swoooon*

What makes Mike Madden special? How is he different from your other heroes?

There’s a line in the book that describes Mike Madden perfectly: “He’s a fairy tale prince in a rock star’s body.” Mike Madden is a rock star who has no interest in groupies or one-night-stands. Since the beginning of this series, he’s been looking for someone special, someone he could grow old with. Readers fell in love with his heart even before he had anyone to love. He has a deep respect for women and love and commitment, and he’s never taken advantage of the women throwing themselves at his feet. Readers have been rooting for him to meet his “someone special” since the very first book, and in HAVOC, he finally finds her.

What was it like writing a villain?

It was a little weird, realizing that someone so damn evil came out of my own head. LOL. Writing Danica (the villain) was interesting because most of the planning for her character never even made it onto the page. Of course, as with any villain, it’s important to remember that they are the hero of their own story. If I wrote this same story from Danica’s perspective, it would read completely differently, but this isn’t her story, and she’s not the star of the show. In order for me to understand her (which I try to do with all of my characters, even the side ones), I had to find out why she was the way she was, which made me sympathize with her to some extent, and then I needed to figure out how much of that I wanted to reveal to readers—how purely evil I wanted her to come across. And in this book, I decided to make her really damn evil. Which—I’m not going to lie—was really frustrating at times, but really fun at others!

If Zombies took over the world and you had to pick one of your characters to be your sidekick to survive, who would you pick and why?

Oh gosh, this is HARD! Honestly, probably Mike. And here’s why:

  1. He’s a video game fanatic, so he definitely has some knowledge about guns and combat.
  2. He’s a gentleman, so he’d never leave me behind, and he’d always put my safety first.
  3. He’s a drummer, so you KNOW he has some serious strength in those arms! He’d be able to wield handheld weapons with ease, and he’d probably be pretty damn skilled with them.
  4. He’s really hot. If my days on this Earth are numbered…. yeah, I think I’ll spend them with him. 😉

Excerpt

Rosco Redmond was an opportunity Kitty couldn’t afford to mess up.

The door to his Georgian town house lacked any attempt at welcome. It faced the world with immaculate London style—glossy black paint against warm cream stone—handsome but unadorned.

The peaceful, exclusive inner city cobblestone street oozed understated elegance. Its sweep of heritage buildings an oasis of secluded tranquility, just a few blocks away from London’s hectic commercial center.

But it had Kitty’s heartbeat thundering in her ears as unwanted memories flooded her in a cold tide of rejection. Memories of the miserable childhood she’d purged from her adult life.

It was the worst coincidence that the Redmond house looked an awful lot like her childhood home and represented the kind of world Kitty never wanted to be part of again.

The unexpected shock had all her buried insecurities nibbling at her confidence.

But she’d never walked away from a challenge since she was sixteen, when her mother died and left her alone. A time of shame, of dark and painful memories usually left undisturbed and firmly in the past where they belonged.

Shaking them off now, she faced the house squarely, rocking discreetly from foot to foot to ease the ache of her highest heeled boots. She’d chosen them for courage, so she didn’t mind the pain.

Straightening her back, she commanded her nerves to focus and smiled as her fingers caressed the worn strap of the camera hung around her neck.

She could do this job.

Plucked at short notice from the lowest ranks of LJ Redmond Publishing’s contracted photographers for this urgent assignment, she couldn’t believe her luck. It was a matter of timing, the human resources department had informed her, because all of Mr. Redmond’s senior photographers were unavailable at this time.

She would do whatever was required, as her financial security depended on nailing this project—whatever it turned out to be—and taking her best photos ever.

Kitty took one last look at the imposing three-story building, sucked in a deep breath, and bounded up the four steps to the porch. She found the discreetly recessed doorbell and pressed it for a long, determined ring.

Hoisting her camera bag onto her hip, she took another steadying breath as the sound of security locks opening reminded her this was serious business.

Then Rosco Redmond, CEO of his family’s Investment and Publishing Groups, stood in the doorway. She’d expected a butler in coattails or a housekeeper to answer the door.

The man himself was tall, lean, and gorgeous. Tailored for business in an impeccable dark suit and blood-red tie.

Tangling with the London Tycoon is a contemporary romance between Rosco Redmond and Kitty Mayfair, two characters who think they have nothing in common. In fact their perceived differences are the very reasons they should be together.

It takes them a while to see this for themselves!

In the meantime they endure a complicated sort of fake relationship, are hounded by the paparazzi, feel harassed by memories of childhood traumas, and try to resist being seduced by the promise of their own happily ever after.

Throw in an international pop star, some meddling, match-making Irish relatives, and a lucrative private palace photography contract. And, phew–it’s hectic!

How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the story?

Rosco and Kitty popped into my head as fully formed characters. I loved them instantly. Kitty made me laugh and Rosco made me smile–he was doomed from the moment he opened his smart London door!

Name one thing you won’t leave home without.

My diary. I need to write things down to ensure they happen!

Name three things on your desk right now.

• A ‘6 Minute Morning Yoga’ book
• A pot plant half eaten by my cat—she thinks it’s a salad bar
• My diary

What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

Read, Pinterest, garden, and dream of travelling on a castle tour.

What types of scenes are your most favorite to write?

I love writing witty dialogue scenes with lots of underlying emotion and sensual attraction. My current favorite is under a table at a wedding—you’ll have to buy Tangling with the London Tycoon to read it.

Donna 5 Stars

This book was a witty, fast-paced story that kept me on the edge of my seat. I related to Lou right away; her strength, her humor and her struggle to be independent was entertaining. I completely related to her choice in falling for Callum as well. I knew there was more to the hot boss-man and boy was I right. I just wish their consummation of all that sexual tension happened earlier but that did not take away from my love of the book. The Search and Rescue Team seems like a fun diverse group of people who have an easy rapport that I can’t get enough of. Their funny camaraderie just made them all real and showed how they deal with the danger above and below the ice. I read way past my bedtime because I could not put it down until I knew what happened with the danger and the romance. I highly recommend this novel and I cannot wait for the next installment.

First of all I loved this book and the prequel novella, On His Watch. The witty dialogue was so much fun mixed in with the danger and romance.

Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Except for the few times I was reduced to banging my head against the desk when my characters refused to cooperate, it was a blast to write, too.

1. You have a well-rounded background so I would like to ask; did those experiences urge you to become a novelist or did the desire to write spur your exciting life choices?

My life and writing mostly ran in tandem. I chose the eclectic range of jobs and classes and hobbies because I thought, “That sounds fun.” Once I started the Search and Rescue series, though, my experiences began sneaking into the books. In Hold Your Breath, Lou’s first time in a dry suit was uncomfortably close to mine (minus the hot men—oh, and the dead body). My editor had to keep steering me away from too-graphic forensic descriptions. What is “interesting” and “kind of awesome” to me is “gross” to her and most of the rest of the world.

As most people who know me can attest, I can discuss alternative energy systems for hours, long after the listener’s eyes have glazed over with boredom. Therefore, I tried to restrain myself when writing about Lou’s rudimentary system, although a few of my own challenges crept in. Sometimes, like Lou, I just wanted toast, but when my wind turbine and propane generator were both down, leaving only the PV (solar) panels, there was no toast for me—at least not during non-daylight hours. There was no TV, either, which meant I got a lot of writing done.

2. I love the camaraderie of the Rescue Team most of all but what do you love the most about your characters?

Yay! I really wanted to capture the closeness of a team of first responders, so I’m glad it clicked for you. I think my favorite aspect of the Search and Rescue series is the characters’ courage. Whether it’s jumping into ice-cold water, running into a burning building or just deciding to make a positive life change and following through, they face fear head-on and push past it. I’m amazed and impressed by how real-life first responders go to work every day, knowing that they could encounter life-threatening dangers. That steady, constant bravery truly impresses me.

3. What was the easiest and what was the hardest part of writing this book?

The easiest part, surprisingly enough, was writing the first drafts. The stories seemed to just flow out of me, and, after going out to sweep snow off the solar panels or feed the wood boiler, I’d be excited about returning to writing a scene. The hardest part…hm. It was probably the edits. Normally, I love doing edits, love rearranging the story until it’s as good as we (my editors and I) can get it. Since I’ve started working the overnight shift at a bakery, however, my editing and writing time has been compressed into that too-short period between making bread and writing words. With the rapid-fire release schedule of the Search and Rescue series (all the books are only two months apart), things have been…busy. Overall, though, the process has been amazing. Working with Sourcebooks has been a wonderful experience.

The Total Package by Stephanie Evanovich

Publication Date: March 15, 2016

Synopsis

imageSmart and sexy Dani Carr knows as much about football as any man–maybe more. It’s always been her dream to make a living talking about the game she loves. But Dani’s not interested in being just the usual eye-candy sideline reporter; she wants to be the first woman analyst on a pre-game show, the ultimate in exclusive boys-club jobs. And it turns out, that despite the odds, she has the talent to get her there.

Star quarterback-and heartthrob–Tyson Palmer always did things in spectacular fashion, including ruining his career after debuting as a first-round draft pick. When the head coach of the Austin Mavericks refuses to let him waste his million dollar arm, Tyson makes a Hail Mary pass at redemption and succeeds with everyone…except Dani, who appears to be using her high-profile commentator job to make a name for herself at his expense.

Dani refuses to let anyone forget about Tyson’s transgressions… and for good reason. There’s history between these two, sizzling history that dates back to their college days, and it ended in another spectacular flame-out of Tyson’s. He’s conveniently forgotten all about that episode because Dani is no longer the cute girl next door he barely remembers–she’s a bombshell with huge ratings and a long memory.

But can a woman trying to claw her way to the top and a quarterback who knows all about rock bottom make it to the Super Bowl without destroying each other in the process? And what will happen when Tyson-riding high on his career comeback-realizes he needs to make an even more important comeback with Dani?

Stephanie, with THE SWEET SPOT, and now with THE TOTAL PACKAGE, you write heroes within the sports world (Baseball for TSS and Football for TTP). What aspects of that lifestyle makes for writing a great hero? And as with Tyson, what aspect’s of that lifestyle can make for great drama/character development?

Sports heroes are fun because it’s easy to picture them having lots of attitude. Also, they are disciplined when it comes to their bodies, which really helps ratchet up the hotness. And if they are at the top of their games, they usually have lots of disposable income. In Tyson’s particular case, it all sort of worked against him, because it was that very lifestyle that caused him to implode.

You write heroines that any reader can not only relate to, but could consider that woman a best friend, as with Dani from THE TOTAL PACKAGE. Do you find qualities of yourself if any of your heroines or do you write them based on someone you know?

Holly from Big Girl Panties shares the most of my views and personality traits, so thanks for the compliment! Amanda from The Sweet Spot has the full on sass I always wish I had. Dani Carr? (Heavy sigh). There were times I actually hated her, because she made some really bad decisions that I wouldn’t personally make in a million years. I can remember at one point calling my editor in tears and telling her I can’t write this woman anymore. My editor was thrilled and told me it showed real growth. Geez. Talk about growing pains.

If you could cast Tyson and Dani with any celebrity, who would you choose? Any reason why?

I would love to see Billy Miller as Tyson. For folks out there that may know him, he plays Jason Morgan on General Hospital. Excuse me, make that the NEW Jason Morgan, taking over for Steve Burton. The fact that Billy got me to forget about Steve is a coup in and of itself. I’m a huge GH fan, and for a long time I shook my fist in the air and shouted – “There is only one Jason Morgan!” Billy is adorable and does vulnerable so well. And has the killer blue eyes. While I was writing The Total Package, I would often picture Kaley Couco. Or maybe I was just watching a lot of Big Bang Theory. But she is totally my pick for Dani.

What is your favorite romance troupe to write? (Second Chance Romance, Opposites Attract, etc)?

Since The Total Package is only my third book, I’m not sure I have enough experience to give that question an honest answer. But now I suddenly feel like trying to write an opposites attracting, second chance romance.

Which was your favorite book to write? And which couple was your favorite to write?

Yikes! Why do I feel like you’ve just asked me to choose a favorite child? Haha. But seriously, each book offered me the opportunity to meet new people and continue this amazing adventure, not to mention try and grow as a writer. In all honestly I think the book that is my favorite will always be the book the am working on at the time. It keeps me focused and in the moment.

Of course all your readers want to know what you have in the works for your next release?

I’m currently working on a younger man/slightly more mature woman story with a martial arts backdrop. I’m even venturing into first person with this one. I was always the kid that just jumped into the deep end of the pool and my days alternate between thinking I’m having the time of my life and ordering a straight jacket. Some days, those thoughts alternate hourly.

Thank you so much for chatting with us today!! Thanks so much for having me. It’s been a real pleasure. Bring on the Ides of March!

Excerpt

Within the last three years, the adjectives attached to Tyson Palmer’s name slowly morphed into overrated, reprehensible. A real waste. Wanting to stay in his father’s good graces, Tyson had often joined him in his downhill slide. Douglas Palmer proved a bad example. Tyson took responsibility for his mother’s heartbreak, stuffed all the hurt and pain deep down inside, and set the sequence on his time bomb to self-destruct.
Coming back here was supposed to be a kind of victory lap. But Tyson wasn’t being followed by throngs of alumni or asked to attend any ceremonies, not even the ones taking place on the football field. He wasn’t invited to any parties. Instead Tyson had been forced to retreat to the Bunker, where he was pointed at from a safe distance, like an animal in a zoo. Occasionally someone would approach him, politely engage him for a few moments, mostly about the weather, and be on their way. Nothing to see here—the phrase cops always used to move spectators along from a crime scene. His teammates and Blitz management had tried to be supportive . . . in the beginning. But it wasn’t long before Tyson’s shenanigans robbed him of his ability to lead, and they all had grown weary of him, even before he started racking up more interceptions than touchdowns on game day. He knew that within the next twenty-four hours his dirty drug test results would leave him jobless and probably tossed out of the league. The book they were getting ready to throw at him was heavy. I sure won’t miss those cold Massachusetts winters, he thought to console himself.
“Tyson?”
Bloodshot eyes focused on a face that was vaguely familiar. It was a wisp of a ghost brushing by him. Someone insignificant, but at the same time, not—pretty, but low maintenance. Dark hair, hazel eyes with a glint of determination magnified through the lenses of her glasses. When he’d seen her last, she had something he needed. And something he’d wanted.
“Helen?” he tried to zero in. They had spent quality time together, at least for a while. He hadn’t seen her naked, but it probably wasn’t from lack of trying. Those whose pants he didn’t get into were much more likely to stand out. “Ellen?”
“Ella,” she said hopefully. “I was your English tutor, in your senior year?”
Now he remembered. A flash that was stark and vivid, from the predrug days, before those first few injuries that weren’t so quick to heal. She had been one of several students handpicked by the administration when he fell short on his classes during football season. Hired for several hours a week to basically cram the exams into his skull and dictate his essays to him. He wasn’t stupid, but he also didn’t make it easy. Back then he thought about nothing but football and was easily distracted when it came to anything else. “Right.” He smiled at her, feeling the warm nostalgic wave. Her last name was something Italian.“Ella Bella.”
He had made up the cheesy nickname for her on a rainy afternoon four weeks into that semester, after they abandoned meeting at the library in favor of his dorm room. When he decided he would rather make out than recite the answers to an upcoming test. She was appealing enough, fresh faced and makeup free, a sophomore who had held on to her freshman fifteen. Not girlfriend material, but he wasn’t looking for a girlfriend.
And after one delicious kiss, Ella Bella had shot him down. Not in cold blood, of course; she’d stammered through the willing-to-date-him speech, but he’d never asked her for a date, and casual sex was off the table. She told him that she was still a virgin and she planned on staying that way. Something about a virgin never failed to make a horny guy hum. Tyson jokingly asked her to bang him every time they were together after that, but he was hardly brokenhearted when she laughed him off. There was always someone else on the sidelines. It was more his way of telling her he was available if she ever wanted to change her mind. He began to view her more like a little sister, especially since she could talk football better than any other girl he knew at school, even better than some of his teammates.
“You remember?” She smiled back at him, and then giggled. He still had it. And clearly she knew nothing of what was happening in his world. These days he was on almost every woman’s shit list.

Dianne Duvall’s Immortal Guardians protect humanity from unspeakable horrors–but their hearts are as fragile as any mortal’s. . .

For centuries, Lisette d’Alençon has been a warrior against the dark. She fights alongside her brothers and comrades. But when the dreams start coming, she can’t bear to confess them to the Immortal Guardians’ command. Dreams of a dark-haired man with soft eyes and brutal wounds, a man her heart aches for–and a man she knows has been declared a traitor.

Zach is an exile, a loner. He won’t defend himself against false accusations or grovel to those who should have faith in him. But he’ll damn sure defend the woman who kept him sane against a plague of super-vamps that seems to have appeared from nowhere. The Guardians will blame him, and that will make Lisette suspect, too. With life, death and eternity on the line, who can they really trust?

IMG_1588.JPG
Wow! Where do I start? The chemistry between all the characters is spot-on. The author effortlessly makes you believe they have lived and battled together for centuries with their fierce loyalty and easy banter. They made me laugh out loud and yes, shed tears. I loved every minute of it. Zach and Lisette were perfect for each other and their romance was hot yet emotionally tender. It was very nicely written and woven into the story perfectly. (I do love a man who appreciates a woman’s strengths.) I was pulled into the Immortal Guardian’s world once again and find it hard to let go while waiting for the next installment.

NIGHT UNBOUND
Excerpt

Bathed in the light of a full moon, Zach listened to the activity in the two-story house below him.

Gargoyle duty. Wasn’t that what Seth had called Zach’s propensity to perch upon rooftops and eavesdrop on or observe whatever happened beneath him?

He glanced around. Aside from the trees that towered over him and surrounded the house, his only companions were the shingles beneath his feet, the solar panels that reflected the moon like a tranquil pond, and an opossum trudging across the back lawn.

What the hell was he doing here? He had visited this particular house so often, he thought wryly, that his ass would soon leave a permanent imprint in the roof.

What drew him here?

The answer opened the front door and, offering her Second, or human guard, a “see you later,” crossed to the motorcycle parked in the circular drive.

Lisette d’Alençon, a very rare female Immortal Guardian.

As silent as the faint breeze, Zach flexed his wings and took to the sky, seeking refuge behind one of the thick evergreens.

Lisette donned her helmet and lifted her chin to fasten the strap. Her gaze, as it always did, went to the roof, wandering across the peak as though she expected to find something there.

Or someone.

Did she hope to find HIM there?

No. Of course not. He had only spoken to her twice. And one of those times had been when she and a couple of her fellow immortals had ambushed him, chained him up, and interrogated him.

She knew Seth, the leader of the Immortal Guardians, didn’t trust him.

And yet, Zach almost convinced himself that he saw disappointment in her pretty brown eyes before she climbed onto the back of her sleek black Hayabusa and took off.

He might as well be a kite connected to her with a string. That increasingly familiar compulsion to follow her sent him sailing through the night above her.

Wings spread, Zach rode the breeze, swooping and twirling as he raced the motorcycle that ate up the asphalt below.

The slender figure guiding it nearly scraped her knee on the pavement as she leaned into a curve, taking it far too fast. Her long, midnight braid flapped and danced in the wind, bouncing off the sheathed shoto swords strapped to her back. Garbed all in black, she didn’t wear her long coat tonight and, no doubt, would generate a great deal of attention if any other drivers on the road could keep up with her long enough to notice the multitude of weapons she bore.

And she knew how to use those weapons. He had seen her in action. Hunting insane vampires was a violent, bloody business. One made all the more so recently when mercenaries had gained knowledge of immortals, vampires, and the virus that infected them both.

Zach shook his head. Mankind was so predictable. Getting rich always triumphed over doing good. The mercenaries had seen the virus as a means of creating an army of supersoldiers they could hire out to the highest bidder. And their determination to understand why vampires were driven insane by the virus and immortals weren’t had nearly led to Lisette’s capture.

Slowing, the lovely immortal in question turned onto a private drive and stopped before a tall security gate.

Zach’s gaze lingered on her long legs, outlined nicely by fitted cargo pants, as she straddled the bike and typed in the code.

When the gate swung open, she shot forward once more.

Zach swept his wings down, propelling himself forward and following her progress through the breaks in the trees that formed a canopy between them. She headed for the home of David, the second oldest Immortal Guardian on the planet. Zach had first developed his fascination with Lisette by spending time perched upon the roof of this house, which he often thought of as the hub of the Immortal Guardians’ world here in the United States. David treated immortals, their Seconds, and the other humans who assisted them as family and welcomed any and all to visit whenever they wished to.

Any and all save Zach, who wasn’t part of their world.

Completely distracted, Zach nearly crashed into a large owl. Feathers flew as the owl panicked. Talons threatened. Zach banked, reversed, dodged, and lost sight of Lisette. By the time he caught up with her, she had stowed her helmet away and was striding up the walk to David’s front door.

Damn, he loved to watch her walk, loved those long, confident strides.

And damned if he didn’t envy those inside who were about to share her company.

He waited until she entered, then spread his wings and gently floated down to the rooftop.

A heavy weight slammed into his middle, knocking the breath from him, breaking several ribs, and lifting him from the roof.

North Carolina vanished, replaced by icy tundra being swept clean by a blizzard.

Zach grunted in pain as his back slammed down onto a glacial surface as hard as stone. Several bones in the wings he hadn’t had time to retract broke, snapping like twigs. Ice pellets peppered him, stinging like needles and abrading skin left bare save for his usual leather pants.

Squinting against the white, he focused on the figure kneeling above him, face dark with fury, eyes glowing gold.

Seth, the eldest and most powerful Immortal Guardian in existence. The only Immortal Guardian who could match Zach, who had seen millennia, in age. Give or take a century.

Loyal leader. Fierce protector.

Seth had scorned the path Zach and the Others had chosen so long ago. He had chosen a far different path.

It wasn’t until recently that Zach had begun to question which path was the right one.

“What—?”

“Did you think I wouldn’t know?” Seth bellowed over the howling winds. “Did you think I wouldn’t figure it out?” His large hand closed around Zach’s throat and held him down.

Zach tried to teleport and couldn’t. Seth must be doing something to block or hamper Zach’s gifts.

“I warned you,” Seth said. “I warned you I’ve been exercising and growing my powers while you and the Others sat on your asses. Did you think I lied?”

When Zach opened his mouth to respond, Seth lifted him and slammed him against the ice again, breaking more bones in Zach’s wings.

“Just tell me why!”

“Why what?” Zach growled as agony overwhelmed him.

Lightning streaked through the sky and struck the glacier a few yards away.

He had never seen Seth so enraged.

“Don’t f*** with me! Why did you restore Donald’s and Nelson’s memories? Why did you help them prey upon my Immortal Guardians?”

Donald and Nelson. Leaders of the mercenary group that had TWICE hunted immortals and twice been defeated in epic battles.

Seth and David had buried the two humans’ memories of immortals and vampires after the first “final battle.” And, once Seth and David had buried those memories, no mortal would have been able to resurrect them. Such could only have been accomplished by . . .

Zach shook his head, unable to speak past the fingers clutching his throat.

Roaring, Seth rose to his feet and waved an arm in a circle.

The wind ceased blowing. The snow it had been carrying fluttered down to the ground, settling upon Zach and decorating his eyelashes as silence engulfed them.

SH**. Seth could control the weather? None of the Others, himself included, could do that.

Zach started to rise, but found he couldn’t.

Seth held Zach in place telekinetically, his power a frightening and tangible force. “Only you or an Immortal Guardian could have done it. And my immortals wouldn’t betray me. Just tell me why you did it.”

Zach shook his head. “Your problem, Seth,” he gasped, “has always been . . . that you think yourself . . . invulnerable. Is it . . . so hard for you to believe . . . that one of your precious . . . Immortal Guardians might have betrayed you?”

“You deny it was you?”

“I deny nothing,” Zach snarled, his own fury now matching Seth’s.

“So be it.”

The blizzard resumed, wind whipping Seth’s long hair.

So quickly that he appeared to vanish for a moment, Seth drew a dagger and—kneeling—plunged the blade into Zach’s chest an inch from his heart.

Pain shrieked through him.

Seth leaned in close and turned the blade, heightening Zach’s suffering. “Listen closely, Cousin. This is but a tiny fraction of the power I wield. Betray me again, endanger my Immortal Guardian family again, and I WILL destroy you. If the Others don’t like it and choose to confront me, I assure you they will meet the same fate.”

He rose while Zach struggled for breath.

“Stay away from Ami. Stay away from Lisette. Stay away from ALL of us.” Seth shook his head, his face full of scorn as his glowing gaze raked Zach. “What a f***ing disappointment.”

He vanished.

The pressure holding Zach in place fell away.

Raising a hand that shook, Zach grasped the handle of the dagger and slowly pulled it from his chest.

It fell to the ground, staining the ice red.

He tried to teleport and found he couldn’t. Seth had done something to drain his powers.

Gritting his teeth, Zach sat up with a growl of agony and dragged his wings with him.

A shiver shook him.

He glanced around at the frozen landscape.

No structure or shelter in sight.

For the next several hours, until his broken wings healed enough to carry him home, Zach’s only company would be the anger festering inside him.

That and the satisfaction of knowing he WASN’T the one who had betrayed Seth.

Apparently, somewhere out there, an Immortal Guardian was plotting to take down his or her ILLUSTRIOUS leader.

And Zach would watch it all with a smile.

Reading In Pajamas Donna’s Interview with Dianne Duvall

1. With the wonderful group of Immortal Guardians, do you have a set order to spotlight the main character or does the order change as the books progress?
The order changes as the books progress. I knew when I wrote the first book, DARKNESS DAWNS, that I wanted to tell Marcus’s story next. But that was the exception. I usually don’t know who the next book will feature until I’m nearly finished with my current manuscript. When I initially introduced Zach (the hero of NIGHT UNBOUND), for example, I intended for him to remain a mysterious and sort of shadowy background character in the series. Then I wrote the “lollipop” scene in PHANTOM SHADOWS and knew I had to give him his own HEA. I didn’t know who his heroine would be, however, or when I would write his book until he encountered Lisette in DARKNESS RISES. The scenes Zach and Lisette shared in that one are what compelled me to write their story next.

2. When oh when are we going to learn everything about Seth and Zach?
Readers will receive quite a bit of information regarding both Seth and Zach in NIGHT UNBOUND. You will certainly see more of Seth than you ever have before. More hints will be dropped in ensuing books. Then the final revelation will take place in Seth’s book. I’m just not sure yet when I’ll write that one.

3. I love the way you weave the fierce loyalty and humor into the Immortal Guardians. It conveys their bond in such a lovely way. I can’t help but ask if the humor flows as you write or do you occasionally think of something and jot it down to use later?
It flows as I write. I admit one of my favorite things to hear from readers is that they received odd looks when something this character or that character said made them laugh out loud. I love to laugh, and enjoy making others laugh even more. I was raised in a family in which members teased each other mercilessly, so I wanted to imbue my Immortal Guardians family with that same fun and laughter. Yes, my immortal warriors live a pretty dark existence. They do, after all, spend their nights hunting and slaying psychotic vampires. But they began their lives as mortals who laughed and joked and teased their friends and family as we all do. I thought it only natural for that to carry over into their new existence. More often than not, the humor just works its way into the scenes as I write. But, every once in a while, I’ll think of something funny to add after the fact.

4. Can you tell us if any more of the Others will ‘see the light’ and join the Immortal Guardians?
Hmm. I think I’m going to leave that one a mystery for now.

5. Will we encounter more of Ami’s people in the future?
I don’t think it will be too much of a spoiler to say . . . yes, you will. I can’t tell you who or how or when, though.
