Only two things could make former Navy SEAL Leo Anderson return to the world of weapons and warfare. First, a capsule of chemical weapons lost on the ocean floor, and second, a plea for assistance from the one woman he can’t seem to forget-CIA Agent Olivia Mortier.

Now, working together to race against the clock and a deadly terrorist faction, Leo and Olivia must find the missing capsule, all the while battling the intense desire burning between them. If they can survive, can their growing attraction become more than just a momentary flare?

I really enjoyed this debut novel for her new series. It immediately reminded me of a Clive Cussler novel but with the addition of a hot romance and a lighter flair. I absolutely love the members of the Deep Six team and how they have an easy camaraderie that kept me smiling. Of course they are all hot in their own way which makes me look forward to the next installments which can’t come soon enough. She also made the women well rounded and easy to identify with. My only comment would be that in the beginning, the description of Leo and Olivia’s attraction seemed a bit forced but that soon smoothed out. This story was action packed and thrilling from the start, full of humor and smoldering romance. A fun read all the way.

Hi everyone! My name is Julie Ann Walker and I’m tickled pink to be here today talking about my BRAND SPANKING NEW romantic suspense series, Deep Six! It revolves around six newly retired Navy SEALs who just can’t seem to shake their past and the Navy SEAL motto that “the only easy day was yesterday.” Set in the Florida Keys, the series is filled with sun, sand, danger, intrigue, adventure, and plenty of half-dressed alpha hotties. LOL! Sound like a good time? I guarantee it is! And I guarantee you’re going to fall in love with these six men.

Take Leo “The Lion” Anderson. With his sun-streaked, sandy blond hair and perpetual tan — not to mention those hazel eyes and beard stubble — he’s sure to win your heart. And that’s before you get to his no-bullshit, take-command-of-any-situation attitude and the fact that he’s trying to fulfill his father’s dying wish.

Then there’s Brando “Bran” Pallidino. A native New Jerseyan, Bran grew up on the mean streets of Newark. He’s rough. He’s tough. And his Italian-American heritage means he comes complete with soulful brown eyes, a face that belongs on billboards, and a love for good food and good wine. (That last part means his beer-loving teammates give him a lot of grief. *wink*)

You won’t be able to resist Mason “Monet” McCarthy. As a boy from Beantown, Mason learned to use the F-bomb in really colorful ways. He’s big. He’s burly. He’s not the kind of guy you’d like to meet in a dark alley. Yet his thick black hair and crystal blue eyes soften what would otherwise be an entirely intimidating appearance.

Who doesn’t love a country boy? Dalton “Doc” Simmons was born and raised in Montana. He’s a lean, mean, fighting machine, with a face that’s all angles as if it’s been carved down to its barest essentials by a hot, stinging prairie wind. Doc has a tragic past. And he’s fighting to come to terms with it.

Next up is Ray “Wolf” Roanhorse. Wolf’s Cherokee heritage makes him strikingly handsome, with a blade of a nose, high cheekbones, flashing black eyes, and a lush, beautifully-shaped mouth. Born into poverty on a reservation in Oklahoma, Wolf has more than himself to worry about. He has his whole family depending on him. But if anyone can shoulder that burden, it’s Wolf.

And last but certainly not least, we have Spiro “Romeo” Delgado. Romeo likes to play up that whole Latin-lover thing. And with his swarthy skin, precisely trimmed goatee, and honed physique, he does a pretty good job of it. But that’s just what’s on the surface. Underneath it all, Romeo is desperately trying to make up for the mistakes of his past.

See? What did I tell you? You love them already, don’t you? Read on for a bonus scene from HELL OR HIGH WATER where you get to meet all of the Deep Six heroes!

HELL OR HIGH WATER Bonus Scene

Family isn’t only determined by blood, but by those who stand by you, fightin’ for you. By those you stand beside and fight for…

That was the thought that drifted through Leo “The Lion” Anderson’s head when he looked around the warped wooden table at his men. Correction—the minute those five wild-ass SEALs snapped their final salute to the Navy and followed him to the Florida Keys to join him on his quest for high seas adventure and the hunt for untold riches, they stopped being his men. But they would never stop being his family. If they all lived for a hundred years, the bonds of the blood, sweat, and tears they’d shed together would never come unbound. They were too strong, forged in the fiery crucible of too many wars and missions to count.

“Yo, man!” Brando “Bran” Pallidino leaned close to be heard above the twanging voice and guitar licks of the singer on the stage. The six of them had spent the day in Key West, gathering supplies and finishing up some repairs on Wayfarer I—the leaking, rusty salvage boat Leo had inherited from his father. And now they were enjoying beers and dinner at Schooner Wharf bar, the open-air establishment that saw more than its fair share of revelers, crusty sea captains, and miscreants who’d come to the end of the road in a bid to fall off the map completely. “That brunette in the yellow bikini top and flowery skirt over by the taps keeps giving you come-and-get-me-big-boy looks.”

Leo glanced at the woman and sure enough. Slam! Her gaze collided with his and there was a definite suggestion glowing in her big, dark eyes. “I think she wants you to poke her hontas,” Bran concluded.

Leo scowled at his best friend as a subtle breeze drifted in from the water, mixing the smells of fish and marine fuel with the sweeter aromas of boat drinks and barley hops that continuously flowed from behind the bar. “How long have you been keeping that little gem in your pocket?” he asked Bran.

“Came up with it just this minute.” Bran grinned, wiggling his eyebrows. “My mind,” he continued, “is as nimble and as fertile as a…”

Leo held up a hand. “Don’t finish that analogy. I can already guess what your mind is as nimble and as fertile as.”

“Personally,” Doc said from Leo’s opposite side, twirling the ever-present toothpick in his mouth in a wide circle, “I would have gone with, ‘I think she wants you to engage her in a little gland-to-gland combat.’” Dalton “Doc” Simmons had one of those tough Midwestern faces. But right now it was split in a gleeful grin that made him look almost boyish. It was damn good to see Doc smiling. For too many years he hadn’t.

“She wants you to rock her casbah!” Spiro “Romeo” Delgado piped up from across the table, never one to miss an opportunity to toss in his two bits.

“Churn her butter,” Ray “Wolf” Roanhorse added after plunking his Budweiser bottle down on the table. He turned and slow-winked at the bird in the yellow bikini. Leo watched the brunette’s eyes widen, her head cocking like a cat considering a canary. With his Cherokee heritage, Wolf was the embodiment of the original American warrior. His visage equally fierce and—according to the lady at the hardware store this morning—beautiful. She’d breathed the word while staring all googly-eyed at Wolf.

“And you?” Leo turned to the last remaining man at the table. “What ridiculous euphemism have you come up with tonight?”

Mason “Monet” McCarthy was as big as a mountain, and just as silent. Usually. But even he couldn’t resist joining in. “She wants you to rumble in her jungle,” he said. His south Boston accent making it sound more like rahmble inna jahngle.

And that’s the thing about family, Leo thought with a shake of his head as he slid on his aviator sunglasses despite the fact that the sun had slipped beneath the western horizon. One minute they’re standin’ with you against the world. The next minute they’re bustin’ your balls.

And he wouldn’t have it any other way. Especially since the good-natured ribbing, immature as it might be, was proof positive they were all slowly crawling out from under the thick blanket of mourning that had descended over them, heavy as a death shroud when—

“Yo, man,” Bran interrupted his thoughts. “You better stake your claim. If you don’t, Wolf’s gonna stake his.”

“He’s welcome to it,” Leo said, leaning back in his chair and picking at the label on his Budweiser with the edge of his thumbnail. “’Cause I’m takin’ a pass on this one.”

Bran groaned and took a long slug of his beer.

“What?” Leo demanded, frowning. “What’s that uuuugh for?”

“Just that I coulda guessed as much.” Bran shrugged a shoulder, his holey tank-top accentuating the strength and sinew of his bare arms. According to Bran, if the sun’s out, the guns are out. Bran’s unending supply of tank tops had become a running joke between all of them. Leo’s balls weren’t the only ones that received a regular busting. Every man’s in the group were fair game.

“And why would you have guessed as much?” he raised a brow.

Bran leveled him with a look that called into question the validity of his IQ tests. “You’re kidding me, right?”

“No,” Leo shook his head, feeling his temper flicker to life. What the hell was Bran getting at? Luckily—or unluckily?—he didn’t have to wait long to find out.

“It’s just that this seems to be your new modus operandus,” Bran said.

“What does?”

“Eschewing the soft ministration and willing company of bar bunnies,” Doc interjected.

Leo scowled over at him, then swung his gaze around to each man at the table. They all wore the same expression of agreement.

Okay, and this is one of those times I wish these assholes weren’t my family. Because he could certainly do without them being all up in his goddamn business.

“First off,” he said in his own defense, “after all that runnin’ around today, I’m too tired to sweat, much less do anything else. Secondly, when you start talkin’ bar bunnies, I only have one thought.”

“What’s that?” Wolf asked, only giving him half his attention. The other half was securely focused on Miss Yellow Bikini Top who, having quickly picked up the disinterest Leo was laying down, was now giving Wolf all her come-and-get-me-big-boy looks.

“Hippety hoppety herpes is on its way,” Leo said, his lips twitching when Wolf blanched and swung around to attempt to fry his eyebrows off with a look.

“You really know how to spoil it for those of us not currently hung up on…” Wolf trailed to a stop.

The hair on Leo’s head tried to crawl off his scalp. Wolf didn’t need to finish. Leo knew where he was heading. “I’m not hung up on anyone,” he insisted, disgusted to realize he was trying to convince himself more than the guys. An image of Special Agent Olivia Mortier flashed before his eyes. Black hair. Blue eyes. A slightly crooked front tooth that never failed to make his dick twitch. There was just something about that tooth. That tiny imperfection amidst so much beauty only seemed to enhance her appeal. Maybe because it made her real. A real, live, hot-blooded woman with a mind like a steel trap, a wit that was as sharp as a tack and—

Fuck. Maybe he was hung up on her. The wall he’d built up in his mind, the one that was supposed to keep memories of her at bay, was proving frustratingly weak.

“If that’s what you have to tell yourself, cabron,” Romeo said.

Leo sat there, a muscle twitching in his jaw. He refused to respond for nearly thirty seconds. He knew it was thirty seconds because he calculated that for every two seconds that passed he came up with a new way to assassinate the men at the table. He’d totaled out at fifteen.

“You should see your face,” Doc said, the salty sea breeze causing the ends of his shaggy hair to riot. “You look like someone shoved a cactus up your ass.”

“And yo, man,” Bran slung an arm around his shoulders, “there’s no reason to get all hot under the collar.”

“The only reason my collar is hot is ’cause your sweaty arm is around it,” Leo grumbled, shrugging off Bran’s brotherly embrace and taking a hasty swig of beer. Thoughts of Olivia always made him feel punchy. Talking about her, even obliquely, made him feel…something. It was like if horny and confused got together with uncomfortable and had a threesome his current emotional state would be the unholy offspring of the encounter.

“I was born on a farm where we used lots of fertilizer,” Doc said, seemingly apropos of nothing.

Leo turned to him. “And that’s relevant to this because…?” He made a rolling motion with his hand.

“Because it means I know bullshit when I smell it.”

Bran grabbed his belly, crowing like the idiot he was. “You shoulda known better than to ask, bro.”

Leo was considering the most painful way to wipe the grin from Bran’s face when Mason said, “You fuckers need to back the fuck off and leave him the fuck alone.” The man rarely spoke, but when he did his sentences were littered with F-bombs. Mason once told them that was the Southie way. The word fuck could be used as every part of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs…

“Of course you’re the one to jump to his defense when it comes to rebuffing the babes,” Bran scoffed.

“Now what the fuck’s that supposed to mean?” Mason demanded, the vein running up the center of his forehead beginning to pulse.

“How long has it been since—”

Leo figured he better cut Bran off before he went any further. Number one, because Leo could see the bull’s eye was about to slide off his chest and attach itself to Mason’s. And since Mason had come to his rescue…well, then turn about was fair play. And number two, because Leo knew just how much talk of Mason’s past—and the effect Mason’s past was still having on his present—bothered him. “Gentleman,” he said, “I think it’s best of we table this topic of conversation.”

To his great delight, right at that moment their waitress appeared with a tray laden with chicken wings and conch fritters, two of Key West’s official delicacies. “And speakin’ of tables, wait ’til you see what’s about to be laid on ours.”

With a flourish the waitress unloaded the tray. She’d barely stepped back before the feeding frenzy began. As the flavor of buffalo sauce mixed with hops and barley on Leo’s tongue, he once again looked around at the five men who’d been with him through thick and thin. The five men who’d bugged out of the Navy with him after they all made that soul-shaking promise to a dying brother to start living life.

Ones that weren’t filled with death and destruction. These meatheads might be a constant pain in Leo’s ass, but they also happened to be a constant comfort and an unending source of entertainment.

Like family, his mind circled back to its original topic. And it gave him a sense of peace. A sense of contentment. A sense of…urgency. Because they were all depending on him to come through with the big score. He felt the weight of that responsibility as surely as an anchor chain around his shoulders. They’d all made that promise, and now it was up to him to help them make good on it.

Letting his gaze skim out over the marina, he watched as the boats bobbed gently with the tide. Their metal fittings caught the rays of the full moon and glinted as sweetly as the treasure Leo and the guys were ready to start hunting. The Santa Cristina, that legendary ghost galleon, the holy grail of sunken Spanish shipwrecks…she was out there. Somewhere.

And come hell or high water, we’re goin’ to find her…

What’s your favorite thing about being a wolf-shifter?

Too many reasons to count. But we have a real advantage in the senses’ department. It really helps with my job.

This was a fun light paranormal romance with just enough danger to add to the story. I liked that it revolved around an alpha SEAL team member realizing that home is where he needs to be and the fun pack members waiting for him. I wish it had a little more fire but it was a nice contemporary romance revolving around wolves and a pleasant read.

Allan was next up, and the bidding was going strong as he got into the fun of the auction, flexing his muscles and smiling brightly.
“Way to go, SEAL!” Lori and Rose shouted.
“Take off your shirt!” Emma shouted.
Catherine whooped and whistled. Paul had to smile at Emma and Catherine.
Lori’s face reddened a bit, probably because her own grandma had shouted out the recommendation.
Allan began unbuttoning his shirt slowly and the crowd went wild.
Paul laughed. He hadn’t thought that a honey-do bachelor auction would be anything like this. Then again, Emma was a wolf and they could change the dynamics of a situation in a heartbeat. The ranch hands made a big deal of jerking their shirts out of their waistbands and then starting to unbutton them.
A woman shouted, “Just the shirts, gentlemen.”
And that had everyone laughing.
Stripper music began to play, and Paul removed his shirt to the beat like the others did.
Clapping hands, wolf whistles, and shouts indicated the women were just as excited to bid for the SEALs as they were for the cowboys.
Paul tossed his shirt to Lori for safekeeping. When she grabbed the shirt and held it close, he smiled at her.
Allan went for two hundred and fifty dollars to a lady wearing a pink cowboy hat…

Mellie Smithson has a plan…

Mellie Smithson is trapped in the country with no suitors and no prospects on the horizon except, perhaps, the exasperating—although admittedly handsome—guest of her father. Unwilling to settle, Mellie will do anything to escape to London…

Trevor Anaedsley has a problem…

Trevor Anaedsley’s grandfather has cut off his funds until he gets engaged. Beset by creditors, Trevor escapes to the country—ostensibly to visit his old tutor Mr. Smithson—where he meets Smithson’s lovely daughter Mellie. The obvious solution is suddenly before him—but will this fake engagement go as Trevor and Mellie plan? Or will they find that even the best laid plans often go awry?

Today we excited to welcome Jade Lee to the blog! Jade’s latest title, 50 Ways to Ruin a Rake, is out May 5th and is the first in her hilarious new Rakes & Rogues series. To celebrate her new release, Jade is here to share a quiz about the book. See if you can guess correctly!

Question: One of my favorite secondary characters in all my writing is Ronnie from 50 Ways to Ruin a Rake. How many of you have a drama queen in your life? I have several, and they’re not always the women. Ronnie was all the best and worst characteristics of my dramatic relatives. He’s both highly talented and irritatingly focused. Guess which of the following he does in the book.

A. Visualizes a grand romance and goes about proposing to Mellie in increasingly spectacular fashion.

B. Writes exquisite poetry for Mellie, but obsesses about the most trivial details about her appearance.

C. Believes that bloodletting is grandly romantic. Especially if it’s Trevor’s blood. (Trevor’s the hero.)

D. Believes that lies said in the service of epic love won’t come back to bite him.

Answer:
All of the above! Yes, Ronnie was great fun to write because he has one of those beautiful minds that is as self-destructive as it is amazing. He is a talented poet, but the object of his affection doesn’t return his love. So he goes to more and more extreme measures to win her affection. This is how the turkey gets involved. Also how the 2-way and 4-way duels begin. God, I loved writing Ronnie!

Trevor was down. Ronnie was going to finish the fight. But he hadn’t reckoned on Melinda. She’d been an unwilling participant in this whole disgusting display. Well, if her cousin wanted a Cheltenham tragedy, she would bloody well give him one.

She surged forward, having no need to fake the desperation in her voice. “Stop it! Ronnie, stop it now!” And when he didn’t hear her, she said the words she’d never thought she’d utter in her entire life. “My love!”

That got his attention. His fist was raised, but he looked to her, his eyes alight with excitement. “Mellie!”

She flung herself forward. Dropping to her knees, she slid in the mud, coming to a stop just where she’d intended—right beside Trevor’s head. Ronnie reached for her, but she pushed him away as she wrapped herself around the fallen lord.

“Stay away, you brute!” she practically spit at her cousin. Then she used her cloak to dab at the blood on Trevor’s face. “My love, my love, are you alive? Oh God, someone fetch a doctor! Please, someone!”

Her words were ten times more dramatic than were needed, but she’d learned that the best way to deliver a message to her cousin was in the most theatrical tone possible. So she cradled Trevor in her arms and crooned like any heroine in the most lurid gothic romance.

Trevor’s face was indeed a battered mess, but not so unrecognizable that she didn’t see the gleam of appreciation in his eyes or the mischievous smile that pulled at his swollen lip.

“Are you an angel?” he asked. “Have I died?”

The man was lying in the mud, his ankle nearly snapped in half. His face oozed from a myriad of cuts, and yet he still had the wherewithal to give the crowd a good show. It was enough to make her contemplate dropping him in the mud. She didn’t, of course, but she hoped her glare would suffice.

Meanwhile, Ronnie just stood there poised, his fist still raised as he gaped. “Mellie?”

She looked up, shooting a venomous look at his bloodied fist. “Do you mean to trounce me as well? Lay me out in the mud and the shite like last week’s garbage?”

“What?” Ronnie took a moment to understand while she gestured with her chin toward his fist. Then he abruptly gasped and shook out his hand, dropping it helplessly to his side. “But I won. This was an affaire d’honor.”

“Congratulations,” she mocked. “You beat a man half your weight.”

“Hey!” muttered Trevor. “I’m not that small.”

“Oh shut up. I’m making a point.” Then she turned her attention to her cousin. Best make the situation absolutely clear. “You were right, Ronnie. You have made everything so clear to me. I could never love a brute like you. It’s him I want. A man of elegance, not violence.”

She watched her cousin absorb her words, his mind obviously working slowly, and no wonder. Certainly, Ronnie was an accomplished fighter, but he’d never in his life been called a brute. He was a poet, for God’s sake. And his father was wont to call him a useless fribble with no starch whatsoever. Of course, both appellations were completely wrong, but truth didn’t matter here. Not when he’d wanted drama. And so she stretched the truth—she outright broke it—and she felt no remorse.

“I love Trevor,” she said loudly enough for everyone to hear.

“Since when?” her cousin demanded.

Since never. She had a thorough disgust of them both. Especially as Trevor began to speak in a quavering voice.

“Oh, to finally hear those words, now in the moments before I expire. My life is complete.”

“You’re not dying,” she hissed. Unless he was hurt more than he appeared. The thought shot her with alarm until he started speaking again.

“I am dying!” he cried. “Kiss me, my love. Kiss me, and mayhap your love will keep me tethered to this mortal coil.”

“I will not,” she said between clenched teeth.

He pitched his voice to a plaintive wail. “Then I shall die for sure!”

Damnation on all bloody, arrogant, ridiculous men! One glance about her showed that the crowd was hanging on his every word. She didn’t really care until she looked at Ronnie’s face. He wasn’t stupid. He could see that Trevor wasn’t really hurt. It wouldn’t take him long to remember that she’d never spoken of Trevor with anything but disdain. And from there it was a small step to realizing that this entire display was a sham. So she had to do something quickly. Something that he’d never forget, even if he did suspect the lie.

So she did it. She kissed Trevor.

SOUNDTRACK GUEST POSTS

Soundtrack for SHADOW OF DOUBT
By P.A. DePaul

Thank you Reading in Pajamas for hosting Julie Ann Walker and I today!! And what an excellent topic too!! I love music. It can lift and capture a mood so completely, I’m always on the lookout for songs for my stories. I’m not sure about you, but when I watch movies and shows, a well place song (be it orchestral or lyrical) I’m taken deeper into a scene. (I’ve also been ripped out of a scene when the musical director picks a song that really misses the mark, but we won’t concentrate on that.  <wink>)

In Shadow of Doubt, six years ago Cappy (commanding officer of Delta Squad, a black ops unit working for a clandestine agency) rescued Michelle (civilian) from the torturous clutches of a Colombian cartel, and now she explodes back into his life as a murder suspect. The sparks are explosive and consuming…and they’re also dangerous as hell. He doesn’t want to believe she did it, but with each new bit of evidence, he suspects her innocence may be a ruse—a beautiful trap set by a woman who has even more secrets yet to bare.

So…what type of soundtrack did I put together for Cappy and Michelle? Great question! Here ya go:

Tracy Chapman – “The Promise” This is Cappy and Michelle’s love song and an absolutely beautiful love song that couldn’t be more perfect for them. It’s a promise from one lover to the other that she’ll wait for him if he promises to return to her. These lyrics say so much about Cappy and Michelle finally getting a chance at happiness since they were robbed of it six years ago: “Remembering your touch, your kiss, your warm embrace. I’ll find my way back to you, if you’ll be waiting.”
Link: (first video) http://padepaul.com/sweetbriar/music-sod/

Trapt – “Bring It” This is the kick-ass anthem for Shadow of Doubt! Interesting thing about this kick-ass song is that both sides can claim it. Cappy and Delta Squad can say it’s their anthem just as Griffin and Victor (our villains) could throw it back at Delta and the Senator.
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlR_tE69Xc0

Art of Dying – “Die Trying” This song captures Delta Squad’s commitment to getting the job done. It’s also Cappy’s personal anthem (I don’t want to spoil his story but let’s just say his family will never realize just what a sacrifice he made to keep them safe).
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFlVi9MHpDc

Keith Urban – “For You” Yup. This list wouldn’t be complete without this song. Keith wrote this for the Act of Valor movie and it moves me every time I hear…Every. Time.  He really captures the closeness and unity of a team forged by the life-and-death battles they face together—this applies to both Cappy and Michelle as well as Delta Squad.
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWK1sG3spiE

So, there you have it. A few songs out of the many thousands I’d include on the soundtrack. Do you have a song you’d add to the list? Sweet! Let us know. We’d still love to hear your thoughts on my selections or answer whatever questions you may have! Don’t be shy.

Soundtrack for HOT AS HELL
by Julie Ann Walker

Anyone who reads my books knows I love music.  My characters often quote it or reference it.  Classic rock, contemporary, pop, country, you name it.  I listen to it.  So it should come as no surprise that for every novel I write, I always come up with a soundtrack.  The same is true for my short story HOT AS HELL that appears in the WAY OF THE WARRIOR anthology.  (All author and publisher proceeds go to support the Wounded Warrior Project!)

HOT AS HELL stars Harper Searcy, a diplomatic secretary who works for the Ambassador to Pakistan.  When her embassy is bombed and overrun by extremists, the only man who can save her is Michael “Mad Dog” Wainwright, the Navy SEAL she’s determined to keep at arm’s length.  (Of course, she doesn’t, and smexy times commence.  Natch.)

So without further ado, I give you the soundtrack to HOT AS HELL…

1.) I Need A Hero by Bonnie Tyler https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBwS66EBUcY
Because our plucky heroine definitely needs a hero.  LOL!

2.)  The Warrior by Patty Smith https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47y5bo8wtqM
Because our hunky hero is definitely a warrior.  And he’s definitely “shootin’ at the walls of heartache. Bang! Bang!”

3.) Fearless Heart by Steve Earle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzDGvtJ2pgI
The chorus says it all.  And sums up Michael “Mad Dog” Wainwright in one go.  “I got me a fearless heart.  Strong enough to get you through the scary part.  It’s been broken many times before.  A fearless heart just comes back for more.”

4.) We Found Love (In a Hopeless Place) by Rihanna https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tg00YEETFzg
With the embassy overrun by terrorists and war raging around them, Harper and Michael definitely find love “in a hopeless place.”

by Brooklyn Ann

Paranormal Historical Romance

Publication Date: April 7, 2015

First of all, I want to thank Reading in Pajamas for having me on their blog today! To celebrate book 3 in my Scandals that Bite Series, I’ve invited the three heroes and Lord Vampires from by books, Ian Ashton (Bite Me, Your Grace), Vincent Tremayne (One Bite Per Night), and Rafael Villar (Bite at First Sight) to answer a question so you can catch up with the vampires responsible for the protection of their cities.

Best,
Brooklyn Ann

Now that you’ve found the love of your life, what are your hopes for your future?

Ian Ashton (BITE ME, YOUR GRACE): “That I can continue to survive her mischief.”

Vincent Tremayne (ONE BITE PER NIGHT): “That I can hold on to her.”

Rafael Villar (BITE AT FIRST SIGHT): “That I can take Cassandra to Spain to see my family.”

SYNOPSIS

Her interest is purely scientific

Cassandra Burton wants to study medicine, surgery, healing, and everything related to the human body and its mysteries—and she’s willing to rob graves to do it! But a lady can meet dark and dangerous characters lurking around the cemetery. And who could be more fascinating than Rafael Villar, Lord Vampire of London? If she could study his physiology, she could learn so much that would help humans. After all, he’s immortal—and Cassandra is now his prisoner…

Until she gets close enough to touch

As if Rafael didn’t have enough to worry about, with a rebellion brewing and his allies out of reach, now he’s confronted by a beautiful, fearless lady who wants to heal the scars he’s borne for centuries. He can’t keep her, and he can’t let her go, and worst of all, he’s every bit as intrigued by her as she is by him.

EXCERPT from BITE AT FIRST SIGHT

28 September 1823

St. Pancras Cemetery, London

“If one desires a task accomplished correctly, one must do it herself.” Cassandra Burton, Dowager Countess of Rosslyn, repeated the litany as she pulled the rickety little wagon through the moonlit aisle of tombstones.

She shivered under her velvet cloak. Her fingers had long since gone numb with the effort of navigating the dratted conveyance over uneven ground and across slippery, damp grass. Shovels and pry bars clanked across the wagon’s worn pine boards. The winch rattled on its frame.

Something flickered across the corner of her vision.

Cassandra jumped. She stopped and rubbed her gloved hands together for warmth, surveying the graveyard. The area was still and silent as…well, a tomb. Yet the chill in her spine refused to abate. A scornful frown turned her lips at such irrational behavior. Ghosts were an illogical figment of uneducated imaginations, and no one could possibly have business out here at this hour…except herself.

“Worthless curs,” Cassandra whispered in as haughty a tone as she could manage.

If only the men to whom she’d offered a more-than-generous sum to perform this troublesome task had done their duty, rather than disappearing. She shook her head. If not for their unreasonable negligence, she would now be comfortably ensconced in her laboratory unraveling the secrets of the human body…not out in this cold, dreary place, jumping at shadows.

Surveying the newest graves, she read the dates to decide which would be the best specimen. The mysterious disappearance of her hired hands nagged at her. Could a murderer be on the loose? She shook her head and pulled the folds of her cloak tighter. No, by now the authorities would have found their bodies and the news would be sensationalized in The Times.

They were cowards, but she was not. To prove her lack of fear, Cassandra halted her wagon and fetched out a shovel. Her hands trembled nervously as she grasped the wooden handle.

Removing the dead from their graves was illegal. If a constable caught her, she’d be sent directly to Fleet Prison. A fresh surge of trepidation curled in her belly.

Exhuming a corpse was quite a different matter from having one ready on her operating table. As objective as she tried to be, the prospect of removing the body from its carefully arranged resting place by winching it out of the ground and loading it onto her cart was undeniably gruesome. However, gruesome or not, Cassandra needed a specimen to continue her work. And she would acquire it, no matter how much her nerves protested.

Despite being barred from official education as a physician because of her sex, Cassandra was determined to learn the skills required to become a doctor. That included studying human anatomy, and for that, she required cadavers.

Returning to the graves, she made her selection. Alfred Lumley, born September first, 1801; died September twenty-sixth, 1823. Two days ago Alfred had been a living twenty-two-year-old man, three years younger than herself. Whether or not he’d been healthy, she would soon determine. A pang of sorrow struck her heart. His soul is in heaven, she reminded herself. A mere shell remains. A shell that will help me to aid the living.

She raised the shovel, ready to plunge it into the soft soil. “I am not afraid. I am not.”

“You should be.” A sinister, accented voice pierced her consciousness.

The shovel fell from her nerveless fingers, thudding onto the cold ground.

Cassandra knew that voice; it had the rich, dark cadence that had haunted her dreams since the night she’d first met him. She spun around, the hood of her cloak falling to her shoulders.

Rafael Villar stepped out from behind a mausoleum. The shadows embraced his bronze skin, obscuring the scars on the left side of his face while moonlight highlighted his exotic features on the right.

Known as “the Spaniard,” Villar had been an infamous pugilist in Cheapside despite having only one functioning arm. The eccentric and wealthy Duke of Burnrath was his sponsor. Cassandra had often encountered Villar at Burnrath House when attending the duchess’s literary circles. Right away she’d suspected that there was more to the relationship between Rafael and Their Graces. And she’d been utterly and completely fascinated by him.

When the duke and duchess departed for the Continent to travel, Villar had leased Burnrath House. By all accounts he was rich as a nabob. For the remainder of the Season, Don Villar was all the ton could gossip about. But when months passed without the Spaniard making the slightest attempt to join Society, he was forgotten. Cassandra would have forgotten him as well, if it weren’t for those damned dreams. Now he stood before her in the most unexpected place and at the most inconvenient time.

Good Lord, will he turn me in to the authorities?

She opened her mouth to ask the reason for his presence, but the words caught in her throat when she saw that his amber eyes were glowing like a funeral pyre. His sensuous lips—lips she’d unreasonably dreamed of kissing—drew back to reveal white, even teeth…with two gleaming fangs for incisors.

Before she could scream or flee, Don Villar’s fiery gaze widened, then narrowed in recognition. “You! You’ve been the one disturbing my people?”

“Y-your people?” Cassandra stammered, staring raptly at those sharp fangs. She’d certainly never seen those during their previous encounters. Her heart leaped into her throat in dawning horror. This man was not human.

His lips curled back in a sneer, puckering the scars on the left side of his face. “Don’t play coy with me, Countess.” The word was filled with disdain. “Some of my subordinates reported hunters disturbing their lairs.” He gestured at the mausoleum behind him. “It is hard to fathom that you’re behind this, though I should have guessed. Is that why you befriended the Duchess of Burnrath?”

“I haven’t the slightest idea what you are going on about. I came here to… Well, it is no concern of yours.” A wave of indignation bolstered her courage. How dare he speak of her most treasured friendship in such a manner? How dare he accuse her of duplicity when he stood before her sporting unnatural teeth and luminescent eyes? And of what exactly was he accusing her? “What does Her Grace have to do with this?” Cassandra took a shaky step back. “And, in the name of heaven, what are you?”

In a blink of an eye, Rafael stood inches from her. With the same impossible speed, he grasped her shoulder, pulling her close against him. Dizziness swarmed her mind at the feel of his firm heat and his intoxicating scent of forbidden spices. His crippled left arm moved lightly around her waist, his fingers delicately brushing across her lower back. The heady combination of rough and gentle made her tremble.

His eyes locked on hers. “I will show you, Countess.”

Then his mouth was on her neck, firm lips caressing the sensitive flesh, somehow more intimate than anything she’d experienced during her ill-fated marriage. Cassandra melted against him, tangling her fingers in his silken hair.

Sharp pain exploded in her throat as his fangs broke her skin. Cassandra cried out and tried to push him away, but his iron-like right arm mercilessly held her immobile. The pain took flight, and drugging pleasure fluttered within her belly. A low moan escaped her throat as she pulled him closer. Liquid desire pulsed between her thighs. Whatever this was, she needed more, craved it with mindless longing.

Rafael pulled away, muttering a foreign curse. “You’re a grave robber?” Lifting his finger to his mouth, he pierced his flesh with one pearly fang and then gently touched the wound on her throat. The soft touch was juxtaposed by his blazing eyes and furious snarl.

She barely heard his words as her eyes locked on those deadly fangs. Cassandra froze as realization shook her to the core. He wiped her neck with a handkerchief. In confirmation of her suspicions, blood spotted the snowy cloth like an accusation.

“Vampire,” she gasped, struggling to breathe. The foundations of her scientific beliefs quaked within her consciousness. Fairy tales were not true, and magic was not real. Yet here he stood, ready to devour her blood and perhaps her soul. Terror gripped her heart like ice.

The creature that should not exist outside of myth nodded. “Yes, but you will not remember the fact.”

His eyes glowed brighter, capturing her gaze. The intensity caused a fresh wave of dizziness, but Cassandra fought it off. The vampire stood like a statue, continuing to stare at her in a most unnerving manner.

After an endless moment, she shook her head and took another wary step back. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

Villar blinked and the fire dimmed from his gaze. An explosion of Spanish expletives came out in a growl as he seized her arm. “I apologize, Countess. You’ll have to come with me.”

“C-come with you where?” Cassandra stammered in confusion, trying to pull away. He’d already bitten her and drunk her blood. What more could he want? “Why? And f-for how long?”

“I am taking you to Burnrath House,” Rafael snarled through clenched teeth. “I have no choice but to place you under arrest until I can determine what to do with you.”

***

Rafe bit back another growl. Madre de Dios, why did the mysterious intruder have to be her? The Countess of Rosslyn was the only mortal in over three centuries to have gotten under his skin, and he still did not know why. And why did she have to be one of the rare individuals immune to mesmerism?

He’d wanted a brief moment to punish her for being a nuisance to him yet again. He’d wanted to punish her, to show her the folly in seeking out a monster, before banishing her memory. It was the worst of luck that the first mortal he’d deliberately revealed himself to was impervious to his power.

“Arrest?” Lady Rosslyn struggled in his grip, her warm flesh slipping beneath his grasp on the sleeve of her cloak, drawing his attention back to the vexing situation at hand. “Are you a constable?”

“Constable? Hardly. I am Lord of this city.” He held her fast.

“Lord? Of all of London? Whatever do you mean?” The countess tried once more to pull away. “And what of my wagon?”

Rafe tugged her closer before she could trip over a gravestone. “Damn it, woman. Devil take your wagon! You fail to grasp the severity of this situation.”

Truly, it would have been a simple matter had he succeeded in clearing the woman’s mind of the memory. Hell, it still would have been simple if the woman hadn’t been her. Not when her sweet, rich taste lay thick on his tongue. Not when her intoxicating scent of rose petals and woman engulfed his senses.

“Well, of course I do not grasp the situation!” Lady Rosslyn exclaimed, maddeningly oblivious to the tentative hold he had on his temper. “You have failed to explain it! First, I had no idea that vampires existed outside fiction. Furthermore, I have no notion why one would arrest me for exhuming a corpse for my studies. I am fully aware that my actions are illegal, but the logic eludes me as to how that should mean anything to you.”

Rafe sucked in a hissing breath through his teeth, biting back a stream of curses. Conversing with humans had never been his strong suit, but talking with Lady Rosslyn was always especially trying. “Your morbid hobby is of no concern to me. I had mistakenly believed you were hunting my people. You’re fortunate that my people didn’t take action themselves. That you weren’t beaten bloody by a mob, your house set aflame!”

Rafe closed his eyes, remembering how Ian’s third-in-command and a gang of other vengeful vampires had done exactly that to a prominent surgeon only three years ago. Ian had been apoplectic with rage. If the man’s wife hadn’t been in the country, she would surely have perished. Ian had punished the mob and issued a law that all suspicious mortals were to be handled only by the Lord of London from then on.

“Morbid?” Cassandra repeated, oblivious to the rest of his words. “You drank my blood only moments ago and you call me morbid?” Her sea-green eyes glared up at him from beneath impossibly long lashes. The captivating contact was broken too soon when she shook her head. “Well, if it is a mistake, then why are you arresting me?”

Ah and what a sweet drink it was. Yet somehow her life and memories had been more potent. Rafe usually closed his mind to his victims’ lives when he fed, but in the case of Lady Rosslyn, he had needed to discover what she was up to.

Lady Rosslyn seemed to have been a very busy woman during the last year. She’d had the daring to apply to Oxford, Cambridge, and Saint Bartholomew’s to master the healing arts. All those establishments had turned her away because of her sex. But she did not give up. Instead, she’d set forth with her studies alone, even robbing graves to learn the secrets of the human body.

Rafe sighed. This evening’s events had all been a misunderstanding. Unfortunately, one that could not be rectified. The Elders would not permit her to leave his presence alive.

“It is forbidden for mortals to know of our kind. I attempted to banish your memory of the encounter, but it appears you are immune to my powers. So now you must come with me until…” He trailed off, strangely reluctant to voice the rest aloud.

“Until when?” Her voice emerged in a frightened whimper.

Rafe closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and let it out slowly. Unexpected sorrow churned in his gut at the consequence this encounter would bear.

“Until it is decided whether I kill you or Change you into a vampire.”

Geek Girls Series by Gina Lamm

The Geek Girl and the Scandalous Earl (Book 1)

Geek Girls Don’t Date Dukes (Book 2)

Kiss the Earl (Book 3)

Hi there and happy tax day! *groan* I hear ya. It was murder this year.  BUT, let’s talk about something happy instead! KISS THE EARL is finally out in the wild, and the lovely Reading in Pajamas blog has asked me here to chat with you! So that’s a good thing, right? Bonus, we get to wear PJs. I’m ALL. ABOUT. PAJAMAS. Sunday in my house is sacred because it’s Pajama Day. I stay in them all day long, and have at least one nap. Since our successful IVF cycle this January (we’re expecting twins!) I try to stretch pajama day naps to 2 a day. Heh. Got to get the rest while I can, right? Hey, I’m napping for three!

I’ve been asked to talk with you a bit about what inspired me to write the Geek Girls series. Since the original arc is now complete at three books (bittersweet!!) it’s kind of interesting to look back on that now. It was so long ago when the original idea struck me! I think it was 2011? Gosh, time flies.

I’d just read Stephen King’s ON WRITING. I was in the middle of querying my very first full length novel. I’d sold a couple of shorter works to small epublishers, but I still hadn’t been able to sell DRUID’S MARK, my first book. (Yeah. It totally wasn’t ready.) I’d gotten a few serious nibbles on it, and I was prepping for my very first writer’s conference.

Getting the chance to sit down and talk face to face with agents and publishers was exciting, but also nerve-wracking! This was my chance, I thought. BUT, I’d sent DRUID’S MARK off to a publisher after doing some revisions they’d requested. I thought there was a great chance it would sell to them. So what could I do? Wasting the chance to pitch was not an option. If that book sold, what could I pitch?

So, I thought about ON WRITING. Stephen King (who I’ve been a fan of since I was 12 and read DOLORES CLAIBORNE for the first time) said “write what you like.” Which is a little different than the usual writing advice, which is “write what you know.” So, while driving home one night, I started listing things in my head that I liked.

The first one? Regency romance.

The second? World of Warcraft. Yup, the computer game with the Orcs and Elves and all sorts of magical creatures.

The idea of somehow mashing the two together to create a story was born right there, and then it became a time travelling geek girl who meets an aristocratic hero and falls in love despite the hundreds of years between them. So I wrote, and I wrote, and I busted my booty to get it done before the conference. It worked. And Sourcebooks loved the idea, and after some tweaks, I had my very first full-length novel contract.

I love this series. I learned so much through writing it, and I had a ton of fun. It’ll always be dear to my heart. And now that KISS THE EARL has finally arrived, I can look back and smile.

I hope you get the chance to check out the series, especially KISS THE EARL! Thanks so much for having me today.

XOXO,
Gina Lamm

DIRK KNOWLTON ON TOUR – Them’s Fightin’ Words

Dirk grunted something unintelligible before turning back to Wade. He’d resume the look of a pit bull preparing for a fight. “The only asshole is the one who would give away the family farm.”

“Seven point eight mil’ is hardly a giveaway.”

“You can’t put a price on four generations of blood, sweat, and tears. You’ve got no friggin’ loyalty, Wade.”

Wade’s expression darkened, his lips compressed. The testosterone levels were rising as palpably as the flush invading Nikki’s cheeks.

“Save it for later, will you, Dirk? Nikki doesn’t need to witness our family feud.”

“Why’s that?” Dirk challenged. “Don’t want her to witness your shortcomings in our pissing contest?”

Wade met his brother’s glare, fists clenched at his sides. “I said this isn’t the time, Dirk.”

Silent seconds ticked by making Nikki feel like a participant in a Wild West showdown. Just when she was certain violence would erupt, Dirk backed down.

“We’re not done talking, li’l bro—not by a long shot.”

Entertainment journalist Lita Matthews is on the verge of making it big. As in her-own-TV-show big. She just needs amazing inside scoop on the year’s hottest celebrity wedding. Instead, her big break is becoming a big nightmare—all thanks to rock star Rocky Cardano. Who apparently hasn’t gotten over what happened between them four years ago…

Rocky is pretty damn familiar with just how far Lita will go for a “scoop.” Hell, their unbelievably hot hook-up in Mexico years ago was the story of a lifetime. Rocky’s learned his lessons. He’ll do whatever it takes to keep her from the story—even if he has to seduce her to the point of distraction! But Lita has always had a way of getting under his skin. Only this time, he won’t be able to just walk away.

Another amazing book by Robin Covington! I love her books and this one is a new favorite. I loved Rocky, the yummy rock star drummer. He spouts these swoon worthy lines that just made me melt. Rocky and Lita together is scorching hot! I couldn’t put this book down. Robin Covington has a way of writing that grabs my attention and draws me into the story. Playing With the Drummer is the third book in Entangled Indulgence’s Head Over Heals series, but each book can be read as a standalone. These characters appeared in the other books though so I suggest you start at the beginning. It’s a great series and I recommend them all. Robin Covington delivers sizzling love stories that never disappoint.

Friends –

I love a good Hollywood romance. The glamour. The sexy vibe of the opulent life. Add in the edgy, exciting world of rock-n-roll and I jump from “yes, please.” to “gimme, gimme” at the speed of Eddie Van Halen’s guitar riff on “Hot for Teacher”.

So writing about a broody, Alpha, reclusive drummer from the world’s most popular rock band and an entertainment journalist hell bent on getting her own TV show¼was a ton of fun. Add in the fact that they have a combustible history and you’ve got a story I hope you cannot put down.

Warning: This book contains a sexy, Alpha rock star who just wants to be left alone and the gorgeous, super talented reporter who thinks that is the worst idea ever. When they are thrown together and forced to play nice, the competition begins in the bedroom but ends on the front page. The author is not responsible for spontaneous combustion of the reader.

To celebrate my release, I’m giving away a $50 giftcardand 5 SWAG packs! Enter the rafflecopter for your chance to win!

They were still touching, from shoulders down to their thighs, bodies trading warmth in the slight chill of the night next to the lake. She was close enough to kiss, close enough for him to caress, and he bit back a groan when he recalled her curves. She was smooth muscle, silky skin, lush breasts that filled his palms with their delicious heavy weight. Rocky broke eye contact, taking the chicken-shit way out for a moment.
He should move, get up and walk around, but he wasn’t going to do it. The big, horny bastard who made poor decisions was super-powered by tequila shots. That guy was like the Hulk, except that poor schmo in the movie couldn’t fuck without losing control, and when you were green with anger-management issues— that was a big problem. But Lita loved it when he lost control, and he enjoyed it when she took everything he had and begged for more.
The silence between them wasn’t awkward, and it wasn’t empty. The drumbeat of what they were both contemplating was in time with the pounding of their hearts. His cock ached, strained against the fly of his jeans; his mouth salivated with the desire to taste her. Lita’snipples were tight under the flimsy fabric of her tank top; they rose and fell like she’d been running. He was waiting for some sign that she was on board for them to both make a poor drunken decision.
“I’m really sorry about Mexico…after Mexico,” Litawhispered as she looked up at him again, her breath warm against his mouth. He licked his lips, disappointed that he couldn’t taste her there.
“Let’s not talk about it anymore.”
“Do you believe me?”
Rocky sighed slightly, cataloging the hope in her eyes that maybe they could put this behind them. He reached out a hand, allowing his fingers to trace the arc of her cheek, the side of her neck, dipping into the hollow of her throat and coming to rest on the curve of her breast.
The tension was strung taut between them, but through it all, he realized that he owed her an answer before this went any further.
“I’m just tired of fighting about it.”
She closed her eyes briefly, and he wasn’t sure if it was because of his words or the effect of his gentle stroke against her flesh.
“That’s not a great answer,” Lita said, opening her eyes again.
She studied his face, her eyes processing each assessment she made, every calculation of pros, cons, and the absolutely insane. Rocky expected her to pull away, to end this detour and frolic into madness. He needed her to do what he could not do. He wanted her under him, around him. Wanted her in every way he’d had her those three days in Mexico, wanted to refresh those living memories with warm flesh, wet kisses, and pleasure. But he wouldn’t lie to get it.
“It’s the best I can do,” he whispered.
“I know for a fact that isn’t true.”
“You’re right,” he said as he slid his other arm between them and around her waist. He tugged her upward, and the movement put her eye-to-eye, mouth-to-mouth with him. This was without a doubt the dumbest thing he’d ever done, drunk or sober, but it felt incredible. He’d dreamed about this, woken achy and hard from his subconscious fantasies that involved Lita, a hammock on the beach, and not a stitch of clothing in sight. “You are so goddam beautiful.”
She inhaled quickly, her breath catching before stuttering out. “You’re drunk.”
“Yep. Enough to tell you what I want.”
“And what do you want?” Her eyes told him she knew what his answer would be. Her expression dared him to say it out loud.
He ran a thumb over her lips, dipping in when she opened, a shiver racking him when her tongue swirled around the digit. “I want you.”
Lita shifted, swinging a leg over him until she straddled his waist. On instinct, he moved his hands, cupping her ass and touching the sweet heaven of bare skin where her tiny skirt had shifted up. She leaned over him, mouth within kissing distance, one hand wrapped around his neck and the other around a long hank of his hair.
“You don’t even like me.”
“I’m good at pretending.”
She smiled, her eyes dark, smoky, tinged with mischief and softened by the tequila buzz. “For how long?”
Rocky leaned closer, a gentle brush against her lips catching her laughter and then stopping it altogether with a deep, hot kiss. He sank into her mouth, using his tongue and his lips to coax her first moan of pleasure. He pulled back, making sure she saw how very serious he was.
“For as long as it takes to make you come.”

Caught between desire and loyalty…

Derek DiMarzio would do anything for the members of his disgraced Special Forces team—sacrifice his body, help a former teammate with a covert operation to restore their honor, and even go behind enemy lines. He just never expected to want the beautiful woman he found there.

When a sexy stranger asks questions about her brother, Emilie Garza is torn between loyalty to the brother she once idolized and fear of the war-changed man he’s become. Derek’s easy smile and quiet strength tempt Emilie to open up, igniting the desire between them and leading Derek to crave a woman he shouldn’t trust.

As the team’s investigation reveals how powerful their enemies are, Derek and Emilie must prove where their loyalties lie before hearts are broken and lives are lost. Because love is too hard to come by to let slip away…

IMG_4725.JPG
I was looking forward to Marz’s story and boy did it live up to it. The action and suspense kept me glued to the chair reading and when you add the hot steamy romance, well it was pulse pumping at it’s finest. Emilie was a great fit for Marz and I enjoyed how their romance blossomed and the easiness of their relationship. Even when things went bad for them. As always, the light banter and closeness of the group can choke you up one minute and laugh the next. It is one of those books that I couldn’t wait to see how it turned out but hated that it ended.

INTERVIEW WITH LAURA KAYE
QUESTIONS FROM READING IN PAJAMAS/ Donna

Post for Reading in Pajamas 12/4/14
By Laura Kaye

I’m super excited to I’m very excited to be here today to celebrate the release of my new book, Hard to Come By! This book is part of my super sexy and suspenseful Hard Ink series about the surviving members of an Army Special Forces unit investigating the suspicious circumstances that got them dishonorably discharged from the military. Hard to Come By is about amputee hero and team techie Derek “Marz” DiMarzio, who finds himself falling for the sister of one of their known enemies.

Today, I’m answering some questions about writing the Hard Ink characters! Read on…

With such a diverse group of men and women in your Hard Ink Series (That I love immensely), I just have to ask: Have the characters deviated or stayed true to how you first envisioned them?

Yay! So glad you love them! *grins* Yes, mostly they have stayed true to how I first envisioned, with a few exceptions. First of all, Easy was a complete surprise. When I proposed the series, there were only four survivors. But when I started to write, all of a sudden there were five. And there was no changing that. He and Beckett were also super quiet characters to me through most of the series, making me worry a bit about writing their books. But as soon as I got to each of their stories, they finally started talking to me and telling me why they’d been so quiet. And it made me loving writing them even more. I think the other exception was that I had no idea how popular of a character Jeremy would become and how important of a role he’d play, so he probably surprised me more than anyone else!

Marz was a rather complex character, not only in how he viewed himself but how this teammates viewed him. You pulled in all the nuances of self-consciousness and guilt mixed with pride perfectly without overdoing it. Did you find his story difficult or were you able to pull from life experience to make it real?

Marz was actually an exceedingly cooperative character! LOL Sometimes a character fights you and you have to dig and dig to get at the heart of him. Not so with Marz. The only thing I didn’t realize about him at the beginning of the series was that he’d been orphaned. That clicked during writing Hard As You Can, the second book in the series. I suppose that is probably where I pulled most of myself into his characterization. My parents divorced when I was six and my dad was pretty much absent afterwards, so I could relate to some of his feelings. And once I knew that about Marz, I totally knew what his wounds were, and they didn’t have as much to do with his amputation as you might think on the surface…

From other authors’ interviews, I see that some stick with a strict order on storyline and character order but some let it flow as the series progresses. Where do you fall on that graph?

Mostly, I don’t plot or outline my books. I know all the big plot points, but not most of the connective tissue. Usually, I sit down to a blank screen and not much else. I haven’t been able to get away with that as much in this series because the suspense elements really do need to be plotted out, especially since they stretch over multiple books. I really did have to know, at a minimum, what questions they were trying to answer in each book and what answers would be revealed. So, I’m a reluctant plotter at best! LOL

Thanks for reading!
Laura

Risky Business is the first book in Melissa Cutler’s new series, The Bomb Squad. I love Melissa Cutler’s books and was really looking forward to her new series. After reading the first book I’m hooked. Hot military guys that play hockey together. Ummm…yep that sounds good to me. I loved it and can’t wait for more books in the series. Risky Business is full of action, suspense, and steamy romance. It captured and held my attention from start to finish. I highly recommend this book for romantic suspense lovers.

What Do You Call A Soldier Wearing Ice Skates?

What do you call a soldier wearing ice skates? A Bomb Squad team member, that’s what! Bomb Squad is the name of the men’s league ice hockey team that Theo, the hero of my latest contemporary romance, Risky Business, plays on. The team is only open to veterans who have been wounded in combat, and, because of that, the team members have formed a strong brotherhood that I’ll be exploring throughout the series.

Why Ice Hockey?

For a few reasons, the first being that ice hockey is my favorite sport and I’ve always wanted to write a romance featuring an ice hockey player. Then, the initial idea to write a series about a group of combat wounded veterans and their post-military lives came to me about the same time as the last winter Olympics, which were followed by the Paralympics. I wanted the ice hockey sled teams with awe. Those athletes are amazing! Which got me thinking…was there a standing paraplegic hockey team? And, of course, I soon discovered that there are tons of them the world over.

But even if you’re not a hockey fan, this book is for you because it’s a sweet and sexy contemporary romance, first and foremost. You’re going to love Allison, the woman who wins Theo’s heart. I have to say, their road to happiness is a bit bumpy, though. As you can tell from this scene…

IMG_1354.JPG
A Sneak Preview of RISKY BUSINESS:

As of a few hours ago, Allison had a new mantra. Don’t think about it.
She could live with the aggravation and desperation that Theoren evoked in her, as long as it kept her from the other thought threatening to take precedence in her mind—that thought being about how he’d looked wearing nothing but a pair of sopping wet boxer shorts, as he had been a few short hours earlier on the deck of his houseboat.
Nope. Because she was his boss and that would be totally inappropriate.
He paced to the sink and paused to stare out the window. Allison’s eyes settled on his backside, now clad in worn jeans.
Don’t think about it.
She wrenched her gaze to the table and the cup of chamomile tea she’d poured an hour earlier. It was cold now, but she couldn’t bring herself to bully past him to the microwave to warm it up.
“Theoren… will you just sit down so we can talked about this civilly?”
“It’s Theo. And what was it that you wanted to civilly talk about?”
For the moment, annoyance won the battle over her desperation—and lust. “Don’t play stupid. You know we have a lot to talk about or else you wouldn’t still be here throwing a tantrum like a…like a…hungry bear.”
He prowled to the table, narrow eyed, and braced his hands on it, leaning toward her. “Have you ever seen a hungry bear? Because they don’t throw tantrums. They devour.”
She mimicked his pose, leaning in, getting in his face. “Are you going to devour me?” The second the words crossed her lips, her cheeks heated.
Stop thinking about that, Allison. For real, this time.

(I love that scene so much! That Theo is such a grouch sometimes… *swoon*)
