She nuzzled his shoulder with her cheek. “But you were always a bright spot in my life, whether you knew it or not. You were so assertive about wanting me, showing up at least once a month, that I was afraid to let you know I enjoyed your humor and your interest.”

“Why?”

“Because,” Tal sighed, “I was afraid you’d hound and chase me down like a target if you knew I liked you.”

His mouth twisted. “I wouldn’t have done that to you, Tal. You have to know me well enough by now.”

“I know it now, Wyatt. I didn’t then.”

Wyatt studied her closely. “So that’s what was really behind you sending me away?”

She snorted. “I didn’t send you away, Wyatt. I just never let you in.”

“Call it want you want, darlin’, but every time you saw me waltz in your direction, you got this dark look, snarled like the alpha-female Anatolian leopard you are, hissed at me, and slunk away.”

“Oh, poor baby, Lockwood.” Tal managed a choked laugh. “How did we ever transcend all those awful things I did to you and wind up here in my bed?”

“You got me,” Wyatt said smugly, giving her a satisfied look. “Maybe you just couldn’t resist my larger-than-life Texan self and you finally let me wear you down. With you, I knew I had to go big or go home. It was an all-or-nothing deal.”

Tal snuggled into his arms, feeling him hold her more tightly and kiss the top of her head.

“You are a very, very tough male to ignore, no question.”

“Why did you finally let me in, Tal?”

“You wore me down!” She looked up, a “gotcha” grin on her face.

It was Wyatt’s turn to snort. “Oh, give me a break!”

She slid her hand across his chest, the soft, dark curls moving between her exploring fingers. “You kissed me. That’s what did it.” Her voice dropped in warning. “And don’t start congratulating yourself again.”

But he was. She could see that male pride alive and well in his gray eyes, in that cocky smile of his. “Why not?” Wyatt goaded, kissing her cheek and nose. “I’m probably the world’s best kisser. You have to admit that.”

“Ohhhh, yes, you are,” Tal agreed, her hand stilling over his magnificent heart.
Wyatt cradled her in his arm, meeting her gaze. “Tal, we’ve known each other for three years now. So maybe your feelings for me were on the back burner of your heart, but they were always there, always simmering . . .”

“Well,” she said grumpily, “with you showing up all the time, how could I ever forget you?”

“You couldn’t, darlin’, and that was part of my long-term strategy with you. I knew you were a cautious, conservative kind of woman. A woman who didn’t just arbitrarily hand out her heart to any passing country bumpkin. Matt told me it took a year for Brian to win you over and that you had very few relationships, because when you did, it was serious and long-term.” He slid his fingers across her cheek. “My plan was to remain in your gunsight, not too far away, but not too close, either. I figured I’d know when you were ready to have that next serious relationship. And when you did? It was going to be with me.”

She stared up at him. “You’re a real chess master. You know that?”

“Thank you. I’d like to think so. It worked, didn’t it?” Wyatt met her smile. Sliding his hand down her long, beautiful back, he caressed her, kissed her, and held her. He heard Tal purr, and he liked that wild-woman feline in her. “So?” he asked, nibbling teasingly on the shell of her ear. “Will you marry me, Talia Anatolia Culver? Don’t you think three years is a long enough engagement? Can I get an answer out of you now?” He dipped his head, holding her amused, sparkling green gaze.

“I should marry you just because you’ve waited so long,” Tal agreed, curving her lips against his smiling ones, hearing him groan, his arms tightening around her, his mouth taking no prisoners. It was a deep, loving kiss that turned her inside out with hunger and need for him all over again. When they came up for air, staring at one another, she whispered, “Yes . . . I’ll marry you, cowboy . . .”

“About time,” Wyatt laughed, kissing her hard, keeping her a prisoner against his body and within his arms.

I loved this book! Tough Enough is the second book in M. Leighton’s “Tall, Dark and Deadly” series and can be read as a standalone. I loved Strong Enough, the first book in this series though and it started my obsession with the men in this group of ex special ops guys. Rogan is a sexy combo of charming, protective and he’s just perfect hero material. He’s definitely the hero Katie needs. I loved their story. It was emotional and smoking hot. The story takes twists and turns you won’t seem coming. I can’t say enough good things about this series. Like I said I’m obsessed with the men in this group and I can’t wait for Tag’s story next. Go grab both books in the series. I’m not sure which one I loved more, but they’re both books I’ll read again.

I hear a racy rumble come roaring down my street, getting louder as it approaches. My heart thunders along at a somewhat similar cadence, like the noise alone triggered my internal throttle. No, I don’t know that to be Rogan on his way to pick me up, but then again, yes, I absolutely do. Somehow it sounds like him. I’m already getting a mental picture, even though I’m still sitting on my couch. He told me he might show me what he chooses to drive. Something tells me he’s about to.
When the throbbing engine reaches its peak and then dies right outside, I leap up from my seat and run to the window. My insides twist and slither like a clutch of snakes when I see what’s parked outside. A black-and-silver machine, reading Ducati along the shiny gas tank, rests along the curb. And on its back is Rogan.
Even with his head covered by a matching helmet, I recognize him. I recognize his body and his body language. I recognize the way I respond to him. Even when I don’t want to.
He’s wearing a snug white T-shirt and ratty blue jeans. Nothing that would identify him. It’s the way he wears his clothes, the way the fabrics hug his lithe form, even the way he sits on the bike, like he is one with a wild, untamable animal, that is uniquely Rogan.
When he pulls off his helmet, I’m aware of two things. One, that his hair sticks up all over his head in blond spikes that make my fingers itch to touch. And two, that his eyes are on mine. All the way across the yard and through the sheer curtains that cover the glass of the window, they’re trained on mine. I can feel it. It’s like he knows I’m looking at him, like he can feel it, too. And that he honed in on it, on me. Instinctively. It sounds completely insane, but I don’t doubt it. This isn’t the first time I’ve felt him watching me. And it only gets more and more disconcerting.
For a few seconds, he just stares at me. He’s not smiling; he’s just straddling his bike, holding his helmet between his big, strong hands. The intensity of his gaze burns along my nerve ends, causing me to feel both terrified and excited all at once. It also makes me wonder why I agreed to this. I’m not entirely sure I can be trusted around him. He makes me forget. And that’s dangerous.
Finally, his face breaks into a breathtaking smile and I jump away from the window. I keep backing away until I’m safely ensconced in the shadows on the opposite side of the room. I pull in several gulps of air, fanning my flaming face with my nervous hands. I wait impatiently for the moment when he’ll knock and I’ll be face-to-face with what could end up being a nightmare for me.
But he could end up being a dream for you, too

I loved this sexy and suspenseful installment in the Deadly Ops series. And I mean a capital S on the suspense. I normally like a little more oomph in the sex part but this story flowed so perfectly that their few chances were believable. I’m glad she didn’t throw in a few trysts just to have them in there. I had to read this book in one sitting as it had me on the edge of my seat from the beginning and never let up. I loved how Karen was strong yet not a hard operative. She was the perfect feminine counterpart to Tucker. I connected with both of them immediately and his team pulled me in also. I hope Ms. Reus has plans for them because their personalities scream for some page time. I loved it!

Note: We usually do not post spoilers with our reviews but this book was an exception. We are fans of the series and felt certain details were needed to explain why we felt the way did about the book.

I was so excited to read the new KGI installment and thought of it like a decadent dessert. When I began to read it I thought that maybe the character descriptions were a bit lengthy but I looked over that since it was a KGI novel. I liked Honor at first because she was strong, intelligent and resourceful but still a nice person. With Hancock I figured he would straighten up fairly soon since he had the alpha male traits that I love so much. He also had Mojo, Conrad and the rest of his team to help him.

I began to quickly lose my respect for Hancock when they left the desert. All because he did not even contemplate different choices and scenarios, he was just going to give Honor up knowing the horrors she would be put through. Then Honor lost my respect and empathy about 1/3 of the way through the book when she turned all meek sacrificial goat because she loved him. Then when she apologized to him for not being able to handle an attempted rape by a bad guy? That’s when I no longer even liked her. The ONLY reason I kept reading is because it was a KGI Novel. What on earth happened to the woman in the beginning of the story?

I began to dislike Hancock in earnest when they finally made love. She was a virgin and asked him to make love to her so she would know what it was supposed to be like before she was gang raped. (I could only shake my head at that) It was the night before he would be turning her over to the sadistic rapist and terrorist group for her rape, torture and murder and what does he do? He goes all Dom on her, pleased to see her natural sub tendencies. UH, WHAT? Instead of enjoying the scene like I normally would, in this storyline all I could think of was “ Your hair pulling and forceful actions are really preparing her for the torture tomorrow. Way to break her in buddy…” The only reason I kept reading after that is I needed the HEA to redeem the KGI Series that I love so much…but even that was lacking. It was like some ‘cry me a river’ fest that I just wasn’t feeling.

I know others will love this book and that is the joy of reading, we all have our likes and dislikes. I cannot wait for the next KGI installment so I can move on from this one.

In a nutshell this book was about two people emotionally scarred by what life had thrown at them. It was interesting that you couldn’t really tell who was healing whom, but that was also part of the journey. It helped that I truly liked Rev and Annabel so even when it got a bit maudlin, I had faith that things would gear back up. I enjoyed the people surrounding them and the action didn’t overpower the romance nor did the recovery from the trauma. This book doesn’t fall in the dark, hot and heavy biker romance category. I would decribe Redemption Road as heartfelt, enjoyable and balanced.

“You’re such a beautiful fibber,” Cav murmured tenderly, moving his hands slowly up and down her thighs. He saw that his touch settled her down, her shoulders dropping the tension she was holding in them. “In another forty minutes, you’ll be boarded first. There will be two air marshals on that flight, Lia, to protect you. You’ll be fine.”

She turned and faced him. “I worry about you, Cav, and about all these guys. You’re going to get into the fight to get Medina as soon as you get me on board that plane, aren’t you?” She saw him give her a rueful smile, like a little boy caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

“Busted.”

“I wish you wouldn’t go, Cav,” she blurted out, unable to hide her emotions now. “I know I don’t have a right to ask you that.”

“Yes,” he growled, “You have every right, Lia.”

It was painful for her to look at him, so she looked away. “I know we barely know one another, but there’s something good between us, Cav. I can feel it. When you kissed me, I felt as if I’d never been kissed before. And you did it so well…” She saw his eyes turn dark with emotion, and his hands stilled on her thighs as she absorbed their strength and warmth. She had never wanted him more.

“Listen,” he growled, then softened his tone as he cupped her face. “This is one of the few times I want to be on an operation, Lia. I want Medina so damn bad I can taste it. That bastard is as good as dead. He just doesn’t know it yet. And I hope like hell I’m the man who puts the bullet into that sick bastard’s brain. I want to know that he’ll never, ever bother you or any other woman again. This man needs to be taken out.”

She felt a chill from his icy declaration. Here was Cav, her warrior, fully unveiled. Shaken, Lia whispered, “Then please be very, very careful, Cav. I can’t lose you,” and she reached out to him, touching his face and feeling a day’s worth of beard beneath her fingertips.

Just as quickly, Cav’s feral look was replaced by the gentle, strong man she was falling in love with. She knew he wanted to kiss her as he moved his thumb lightly across her lips.

“When this is over, I’m coming home to you, Lia. I’m sure Robert has another assignment for me, but I’m going to reject it. I want time with you…”

Nothing had ever sounded so good to her. She leaned forward, seeking and finding his lips, releasing a low moan of need as his mouth took hers with unbelievable gentleness. Lia wanted so much more from this man!

She, too, wanted a chance to for them to know each other without being under threat. His mouth slid against her lips now, and she hungrily pressed hers against his, wanting so much more from him, wanting to give equally back to him.

Cav held her, savoring her natural sweetness, her taste, her fragrance. Her fingers open and closed against his shoulders as she eagerly kissed him in return.

His heart was pounding in his chest, his erection painful with need. Time was what they both needed. Time for her to heal, and time for them to explore what they would do next.

A knock on the door, the silent swing of hinges, and then heat and hardness behind me, a faint but intoxicating hint of cologne, the creak of leather. Hands on my waist, lips at my neck. Breath on my skin.

Strong, hard, powerful hands twist me in place, and an index finger touches my chin, lifts my face, tilts my gaze. I cannot breathe, don’t dare, haven’t been given permission.
“You are lovelier than ever, X.” A deep, smooth, cultured voice, like the purr of a finely tuned engine.
“Thank you, Caleb.” My own voice is quiet, careful, my words chosen and precise.
“Scotch.” The command is a murmur, barely audible.
I know how to prepare it: a cut-crystal tumbler, a single ice cube, thick amber liquid an inch from the top. I offer the tumbler and wait, keep my eyes downcast, hands behind my back.
“You were too harsh on Jonathan.”
“I must respectfully disagree.”
“His father expects results.”
I bristle, and it does not go unnoticed. “Have I ever failed to produce results?”
“You sent him away after less than an hour.”
“He wasn’t ready. He needed to be shown his faults. He needs to understand how much he has to learn.”
“Perhaps you’re right.” Ice clinks, and I take the empty tumbler, set it aside, and force myself to remain in place, force myself to keep breathing and remind myself that I must obey. “I didn’t come here to discuss Jonathan Cartwright, however.”
“I suppose not.” I shouldn’t have said that. I regret it as soon as the words tumble free.
My wrist bones scrape together under a crushing grip. Hard dark eyes find mine, piercing and frightening. “You suppose not?”
I should beg forgiveness, but I know better. I lift my chin and meet those cold, cruel, intelligent dark eyes. “You know I will fulfill the contract. That’s all I meant.”
“No, that isn’t all you meant.” A hand passes through artfully messy black hair. “Tell me what you really meant, X.”
I swallow hard. “You’re here for what you always want when you visit me.”
“Which is?” A warm finger touches my breastbone, slides into the valley of my cleavage. “Tell me what I want.”
“Me.” I whisper it, so not even the walls can hear.
“All too true.” My skin burns where that strong finger with its manicured nail traces a cutting line up to my shoulder. “You test my patience, at times.”
I stand stock-still, not even breathing. Breath whispers across my neck, huffs hot on my nape, and fingers toy with the zipper of my dress.
“I know,” I say.
And then, just when I expect to feel the zipper slide down my spine, body heat recedes and that hot breath now laced with hints of scotch is gone, and a single word sears my soul:
“Strip.”
My tongue scrapes over dry lips, and my lungs constrict, protesting my inability to breathe. My hands tremble. I know this is expected of me, and I cannot, dare not resist, or protest. And . . . part of me doesn’t want to. But I wish . . . I wish for the freedom to choose what I want.
I have hesitated too long.
“X. I said . . . strip.” The zipper slides down to between my shoulder blades. “Show me your skin.”
Reaching behind my back, I lower the zipper to its nesting place at the base of my spine. Hard, insistent hands assist me in brushing the sleeves from my shoulders, down my arms, and then the dress is floating to the floor at my feet. That’s all the help I’ll get. I know from long experience that I must make a show of what comes next.
I turn my head, and see tanned skin and the perpetual two-day stubble on a refined, powerful jawline, sharp cheekbones, firm, thin lips, black eyes like voids, eyes that drip desire. My hair drapes over one shoulder. I lift one knee so my now-bare toes touch the gleaming teak, curl my shoulders in, let my gaze show my vulnerability. With a deep breath, I unhook my bra, let the garment fall away.
I reach for my underwear.
“No,” comes the purr, “leave them. Let me.”
I let my fingers graze my thighs, wait. My underwear slides down slowly, and where fingers touch, so too do lips, hot and damp, touching my skin, and I cannot flinch, cannot pull away or express how badly I want only to be alone, to even once have the right to want something else.
But I do not have that right.

I love when you immediately relate to the characters and become vested in their story. That’s what happened with Zoe and Parker. They were so real and believable that I felt I knew them and cared about what happens. Despite the danger of his job, they had me smiling, laughing and swooning at regular intervals. Their friends and family added a nice dimension to everything that was going on with an easy banter that again seemed real and not forced. The romance was as sweet as it was hot, which was a great combination. All in all it was one of those books where you can’t wait to find out what happens but then feel bad that it’s over.

The Red Team Series is one of my favorites and this new installment was no exception. I was so glad that Greer found his someone. I never really warmed up to Remi like some of the other women but I liked her part in this story and completely enjoyed the smoking hot romance between the two of them. I must say I was a little surprised by a part of Greer’s story (I won’t give a spoiler on this) but it worked and it was touching. I loved being with the Team again and witnessing their easy humor and stunning moves when faced with danger. Yes they all have their ghosts to deal with but they also know the Red Team members are there to help them through. I read this nail-biter story in one sitting and then was bummed that it was over. Now to wait for the next one.
