Water Texture Under Water

Excerpt
My hands wander down to his forearms. “You want me now today, or forever? Or maybe a time in between those two?”
“Always. Always, Fast Lane. I want you forever. This is hard for me, too. Sharing isn’t a word in my repertoire.” It shouldn’t be in mine either. His gaze darts to the water on the side of my house. My island doesn’t feel as safe as it did five minutes ago.
Focusing on the task at hand, I lean my head against his chest. “I need to break up with Dax.” I don’t need to explain. I owe it to Dax to keep the explanations for him. I feel Cody’s hand in my hair and his kiss on the top of my head.
“I’m sorry for this.” His voice is low and coiled with control. “I’d deal with it if I could. I’d make the pain go away if there was a way.”
I shake my head. “It’s my fault. I never stopped loving you, Cody. I should have. My, God I should have.” I look up to meet his gaze, ice blue, so much like Dax’s.
“He saved me, but you own me.”
With the hands that are still in my hair, he brings my face up to meet with his, our lips touching in the barest flutter of a kiss. Not enough to taste him, but enough to know he’s mine right back. “Be mine again. All mine.” There’s that word again. I think of Dax.
“That’s the problem,” I say, my lips touching his as I speak. “I’ve never not been yours, Cody.” He kisses me madly, profoundly, passionately. Cody takes my hips and pulls me against his erection. It throbs into my stomach, causing my core to clench with desire. Every nerve ending in my body fires. I feel tingly. I feel warm. I feel him.

Darkest Before Dawn (The KGI Series) by Maya Banks

Publication Date: October 27, 2015

Genre: Romantic Suspense

image

The Kelly Group International (KGI): A super-elite, top secret, family-run business.

Qualifications: High intelligence, rock-hard body, military background.

Mission: Hostage/kidnap victim recovery. Intelligence gathering. Handling jobs the U.S. government can’t…

The enigmatic Hancock has been both opponent and ally to the KGI teams for as long as they’ve known him. Always working a deep game, Hancock’s true allegiance has never been apparent, but one thing is for certain—he never lets anything get in the way of duty.

But now, his absolute belief in the primacy of his ultimate goal is challenged by a captive he’s been ordered to guard, no matter how much she suffers in her prison. She’s the only woman who’s ever managed to penetrate the rigid walls surrounding his icy heart, but will he allow his perplexing feelings for the beautiful victim to destroy a mission he’s spent years working to complete or will he be forced to sacrifice her for “the greater good.”

***POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW****STOP READING IF YOU DO NOT WANT SPOILERS***

Note: We usually do not post spoilers with our reviews but this book was an exception. We are fans of the series and  felt certain details were needed to explain why we felt the way did about the book.

****

I was so excited to read the new KGI installment and thought of it like a decadent dessert. When I began to read it I thought that maybe the character descriptions were a bit lengthy but I looked over that since it was a KGI novel. I liked Honor at first because she was strong, intelligent and resourceful but still a nice person. With Hancock I figured he would straighten up fairly soon since he had the alpha male traits that I love so much. He also had Mojo, Conrad and the rest of his team to help him.

I began to quickly lose my respect for Hancock when they left the desert. All because he did not even contemplate different choices and scenarios, he was just going to give Honor up knowing the horrors she would be put through. Then Honor lost my respect and empathy about 1/3 of the way through the book when she turned all meek sacrificial goat because she loved him. Then when she apologized to him for not being able to handle an attempted rape by a bad guy? That’s when I no longer even liked her. The ONLY reason I kept reading is because it was a KGI Novel. What on earth happened to the woman in the beginning of the story?

I began to dislike Hancock in earnest when they finally made love. She was a virgin and asked him to make love to her so she would know what it was supposed to be like before she was gang raped. (I could only shake my head at that) It was the night before he would be turning her over to the sadistic rapist and terrorist group for her rape, torture and murder and what does he do? He goes all Dom on her, pleased to see her natural sub tendencies. UH, WHAT? Instead of enjoying the scene like I normally would, in this storyline all I could think of was “ Your hair pulling and forceful actions are really preparing her for the torture tomorrow. Way to break her in buddy…” The only reason I kept reading after that is I needed the HEA to redeem the KGI Series that I love so much…but even that was lacking. It was like some ‘cry me a river’ fest that I just wasn’t feeling.

I know others will love this book and that is the joy of reading, we all have our likes and dislikes. I cannot wait for the next KGI installment so I can move on from this one.

FORGED IN STEELE by Maya Banks

FORGED IN STEELE by Maya Banks
PUBLICATION DATE: June 25, 2013
REVIEW BY: Reading In Pajamas/Donna
RATED: 5 Stars

DESCRIPTION:
The Kelly Group International (KGI): A super-elite, top secret, family-run business.
Qualifications: High intelligence, rock-hard body, military background.
Mission: Hostage/kidnap victim recovery. Intelligence gathering. Handling jobs the U.S. government can’t…

Steele, a KGI team leader, is an enigma not even his teammates understand. His emotions are tightly locked down and nothing can break that icy exterior. Nothing except Maren Scofield, a doctor on a mission, a woman who has gotten under Steele’s skin and threatens to crack that unflappable cool he’s legendary for.

Steele is determined not to allow Maren past his carefully guarded defenses. But when she’s in danger, there’s no way he’ll allow anyone else to protect her.

Maren’s hiding something. He’s sure of it. But he isn’t prepared for the shocking discovery her secrets reveal. Or how they will forever alter the course of his destiny. He has a decision to make. Hold tight and shut her out. Or take a chance on something more powerful than he’s ever faced: Love.

REVIEW:
The KGI Team is more than a random group of people, they are a real team and I enjoy how they interact with one another. They crack me up and I love how they support each other through everything. I enjoyed how Steele, the ice-man, gives in to his emotions with Maren. Their romance melted my heart as it was real, strong and heated. It was a very nice counterpoint to the drama and danger which kept me on the edge of my chair. I couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting. My favorite KGI story so far!

THE LONER by Lindsay McKenna

THE LONER by Lindsay McKenna
PUBLISHED June 25, 2013
REVIEW BY: Reading in Pajamas/Donna
RATED: 4 Stars

DESCRIPTION:
In all her years as deputy sheriff, Shelby Kincaid never met a man as stubborn as Dakota Carson. Practically eaten by a grizzly bear and still that man insists on returning, alone, to his isolated cabin in the Tetons. Shelby’s not even sure why it ruffles her—but she suspects it has a lot to do with the instant, powerful connection she feels with Dakota. If only he’d let down his guard with her….
Ten years as a Navy SEAL took its toll on Dakota’s body, his mind and his heart. Since being released, he’s endured months of painful physical therapy…and brutal nightmares. Dakota wants nothing more than to hide from the world, so why does Shelby’s gentle presence suddenly make him question his seclusion? But when Shelby’s life is threatened, Dakota knows his warrior spirit won’t hide any longer. He just hopes it’s not too late….

REVIEW:
The action started on page one and wove in nicely with a returning SEAL’s struggle with PTSD. I liked how the author dealt with this topic and didn’t make it stereotypical. The romance was both tender and fierce as they dealt with so many emotions. Two strong people faced with ongoing danger and finding each other through it all. I couldn’t put this book down.
