Brooding heroes. I’ve always been drawn to them over all other hero types. They stay in my mind long after they attain their happy ending, perhaps because that HEA tends to be so hard-won. They tend to carry around scars that won’t heal and painful memories that won’t fade, closing themselves off from others, fearing judgement or further hurt. I love their complexity, their secrets, the deep inner darkness they don’t bother to hide, and the tenderness they don’t want you to find.

Who are my favorite brooding heroes?

Derek Craven from Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas – Derek Craven is one of my favorite romance novel heroes of all time. It is not just his ruthless determination to distance himself from the gutters from which he had been born that makes him so alluring, or even his rough, almost brutish masculinity, though it certainly helps! Craven is a man of power and wealth of his own making, he is “a figure of mystery; arrogant, self-mocking, sociable and yet intensely private.” Ultimately, it is the unexpected sentimentality buried in depths of Craven’s soul that gives him his greatest mystique and urges a worthy woman to bring light to his darkness.
Avenell Slade, the hero in my latest title, The Untouchable Earl, is also a wonderful brooder. “Are you going to try the champagne?” she asked.
He looked at the elegant glass in his hand. The act had become such an ingrained habit that he never even thought about it anymore. But then, no one else seemed to notice when he did not actually raise his glass to drink.
“I prefer not to have my judgment clouded.”
In truth, he never consumed anything that might promote a loss of control while among society. He had to be ever diligent if he was to successfully maintain his composure.
Perhaps tonight more than ever.
“Then why pour yourself a glass?”
“It has become habit, I suppose. A way to blend with my peers and avoid drawing attention.
She tilted her head. A smile played about the corners of her mouth. “You do what you can to blend in, whereas I’ve always secretly wished I possessed some quality that might help me to stand out. We make an odd pair, my lord.”
Avenell’s lips curved upward involuntarily. “We do indeed, Miss Chadwick.”
He hadn’t intended the intimate tone that had crept into his words, but in seeing her eyes widen with that barely perceptible reaction she had to him, he was glad for it. Knowing he could cause the involuntary response made him feel as though they were on a bit more equal ground.
“Will you call me Lily?” she asked with a modest dip of her chin. “It feels odd to be so formal, considering our…association,” she added hesitantly.
It took him a moment to gather himself enough to respond. “Would you like me to call you Lily?”
“Yes. I think so.”
He nodded.
“Shall I call you Avenell?”
Hearing his name on her lips created a fine point of pressure in his chest. He instinctively squared his shoulders in defense. Although he was pleased she would allow him the intimacy of using her given name—in fact, he intended for her to share far more intimacies with him—he could not do the same in return.
“I prefer you address me as Lord Harte.” He knew his words sounded cold, but there was no help for it. “Or my lord.”
A shadow slid across her expression at this response. Her mouth curved softly downward in a way he found intensely alluring. A tiny line formed above her brow, then quickly disappeared. He could see his refusal bothered her. For a moment it appeared she might dispute him, but she held her tongue.
While she remained silent, Avenell felt an unusual desire to provide some sort of explanation. Not all of the truth, perhaps, but something to help her understand that the denial was not a personal rejection.
“I have never kept a mistress,” he began, carefully easing into what he needed to say.
“I recall you telling me as much,” she replied. “And of course, you know I have never been one before.”
Her tone was gentle, and her features were set in a perfect expression of serenity, but he could have sworn he detected a note of dry humor in her tone. Her composure despite the subject matter astounded him. She was so unlike the typical modest young lady.
Something in the steadiness of her gaze urged him to glance away, to look anywhere but at her. He resisted the temptation and began again. “I never entered into such an arrangement because I knew there would be an expectation of certain liberties that I cannot allow.”
There was a long pause, during which the point of pressure in his chest spread outward. Then she tilted her head in a subtle gesture.
“What sort of liberties?” she asked softly.
Her voice had changed. It was difficult to identify exactly what it was, but it warmed him. Made him feel a burst of impatience, a wave of deeper desire. He took a moment before he replied.
“You will understand more fully soon enough. But I promise, I will not allow my limitations to lessen the pleasure you experience during our association.”
A blush pinked her cheeks. But she did not look away.
“And what of your pleasure, my lord?” Her voice was soft and low. Smoky, like her eyes.
It weaved through Avenell’s senses and hit him hard in the gut. Heat scored through his insides on a direct path to his loins. He had suspected from the start that her gentle manner had lured him so strongly. But the unexpected boldness in her query had an intense effect on him.
His arousal roughened his tone as he answered, “My pleasure is assured. Do not doubt that.”
The pink in her cheeks spread down across her chest and the upper swells of her breasts, but still she held his gaze. He wondered what she might be thinking. Her stillness was disconcerting when he sensed so much going on inside her.
After a few moments, her lashes swept low as she looked down at the glass of champagne held lightly in her hands.
Avenell set his own glass on the mantel over the fireplace and turned to face her more fully. It was time to begin.
“Come here, Lily.”

What are your hero’s greatest strengths? Weaknesses?

Barbara Longley – Sam’s greatest strength is his capacity to love and his total loyalty and devotion to those he holds most dear—his family. His greatest weakness is his fear of loss, which is why he’s closed his heart off to anything remotely serious with women, especially if a woman might turn out to be his one-and-only.

Jamie Beck – Jackson is a generous, deeply committed, and loyal person who is always willing to take the time to help others without being asked. At the same time, he didn’t cope well with a series of devastating losses, turning to alcohol instead of friends and family. He’s been in denial about his problem until the intervention that is the catalyst for his story.

Raine Miller – Caleb’s strength is his sense of family and his integrity. His weakness is insecurity about being loved for himself.

What is your hero’s best physical attribute?

Raine Miller – His eyes. Dark blue with gold rings around them.

Jamie Beck – Haven’t you heard? His smile! According to Gabby, “Anyone who ever said Tom Cruise had the world’s greatest smile had never seen Jackson St. James smile.” He’s also got great hair.

Barbara Longley – Sam’s shaggy, man-in-need-of-woman-to-care-for-him good looks are on par with Chris Hemsworth’s, Jude Law’s and David Beckham’s appeal . . . or maybe Sam is a combination of the three.

Is your hero a commitment-phobe, ‘all in’, or something in between?

Jamie Beck – For most of his life, Jackson had been an “all in” guy who looked forward to love and kids. Commitment was never a problem, but then a series of disappointments robbed him of family and faith in love. His core belief is still in tact, but it’s buried pretty deep at the opening of the story.

Raine Miller – Oh, Caleb is definitely an ALL IN kind of guy. He speaks to her and knows that there is something very special about this girl. He can’t stop thinking about her. He’s hooked.

Barbara Longley – I’m pretty sure if you looked up commitment-phobe on Wikipedia, Sam Haney’s name would come up. Sam’s parents died in a single-engine plane crash on his fifteenth birthday. After that, he pretty much closed up shop as far as his heart is concerned. He can’t bear the thought of caring that much for one woman, only to go through the devastation of loss again. So, he just doesn’t do relationships.

What is the most romantic scene in the book?

Jamie Beck – I suppose that depends on a person’s view of romance. To me, romance is made up a dozens of thoughtful gestures that reveal the depth of your lover’s feelings, in which case there are many to pick from. But if we are talking about physical intimacy, I think my favorite is the second time they make love. It starts off a little rough and hot, and then afterwards, Jackson is very sweet and surprises her. I don’t like to give too much away, because it will spoil it for the reader.

Raine Miller – When Caleb calls Brooke to tell her he wants to see her again before he leaves for Abu Dubai and she invites him to come to Blackstone Island for a few days. I like it because they are both vulnerable emotionally, but they both risking putting themselves ‘out-there’ for the sake of love at the same time.

Barbara Longley – There are a bunch, but my favorite is when Sam takes care of a sliver in Haley’s hand, which is also when they share their first kiss. What he does right before putting her BAND-AID on just melted my heart. I don’t want to spoil the moment for you, so that’s all I’m going to say.

Broccoli Salad
My go-to potluck take-along…plus I make it every holiday. Basically whenever I can get away with it, because it is SO good.

2 bunches of broccoli, chopped
1/2 lbs cooked bacon, crumbled (I use the pouches of bacon bit to avoid the mess of cooking bacon)
1/2 med red onion, diced
1/2 cup golden or brown raisins
1/4 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 cup Mozzarella cheese, grated
1 cup Mayo (Duke’s, of course:)
2T white vinegar
1/4-1/2 cup white sugar

Mix together broccoli, onion, raisins, sunflower seeds. In a small bowl, whisk together mayo, vinegar, and sugar and pour over salad. Mix gently. Chill for several hours or overnight to blend flavors. (This isn’t mandatory, but does improve the taste). Just before serving, add bacon and cheese.

“Why is it you look like you’re thinking something sinister?” he asked, that eyebrow arcing higher. “And don’t lie to me, Dimples. I have a sixth sense.” She watched his slow smile, white teeth appearing as his trimmed beard parted. Her nether regions buzzed like she’d sat on a vibrating phone.

“Because?”

Tag wore an all-out grin, which made her inordinately pleased. Where she was concerned, he wasn’t immune. And she liked that. A lot.
“Excuse me.” Smoothly, he shut his laptop, stood, and walked from cabin to cockpit.
Okay. That was interesting. She hadn’t expected him to leave. Maybe she didn’t have the same power over him as he had over her.
She turned to look out the window, but the nighttime landscape was nothing but blackness. She imagined a sea of clouds and blue skies once the sun rose, anticipating being someplace where the high was above freezing. She wondered what the temperature was on—
“Let’s go.” Her hand was snatched a moment later as Tag pulled her out of her seat and led her to the bedroom.
“Wait,” she said through her laughter as she hustled after him. “What are you doing?”
In the bedroom, he released her, closed the door, and whipped off his shirt. She gasped, her eyes eating up his tanned muscles and bulky arms.

Tiny flashes of dim light spark in the darkened corners of my mind. Slowly, it turns from dusk to dawn, awakening my thoughts as the inner light grows brighter and brighter.
I hear a sound, a faucet running, and I realize it’s the blood rushing through my ears. When it reaches my heart I choke as it comes back to life like a bass drum. Boom. My first thoughts shock the shit out of me. They’re of a girl. A sad looking girl with shiny black hair and huge dark eyes sitting on the edge of the water tower.

She swallowed and licked her lips. “What if I do want it? The answer,” she added.

Years of need and longing roared through Maverick like a drug he’d mainlined. His thoughts spilled out unfiltered. “Damnit, Al. You’re laying there in my clothes in my house with your thighs spread after I’ve just woken up holding you. My skin smells like you. And I’m sporting an erection because of you. Don’t fuck with me.” The words came out harsher than he intended, but she couldn’t play with him. Not on this. Not when he cared so much. Not when he wanted so much.

Her mouth dropped open and her chest rose and fell a little quicker. “I’m not playing a game. I want to know.”

Planting his hands on his hips, Maverick studied her. Her beautiful, languid body. Her pretty, open face. Her eyes, honest and free of pretense. He felt pulled in a million directions. Between wrong and right, between taking advantage and taking care, between giving in and opening himself up to a world of hurt. “I was dreaming of you. Of us. Up at Swallow Falls.”

“That night we—”

“Yes,” he growled.

“Maverick—”

“Fuck.” He dropped his chin to his chest and closed his eyes. Trying to be bigger than his base needs. Trying to put her before himself. “Whatever is about to come out of your mouth is not a good idea.”

“Mav—”

“I mean it, Al—”

“Maverick!” she nearly yelled. “Listen to me.”

His gaze cut up to hers in time to see her sit up a little and take off her shirt. Well, his shirt. Then she laid back again, her eyes on him, drinking him in, inviting him in. “What if I do want it?” she whispered.

Something inside him snapped.

He was on her in a second. Body covering hers. Hands going to her warm skin. Mouth tasting her everywhere—her shoulder, her throat, her cheek. His chest pressed against her breasts, her hard nipples evident, her excitement palpable. And then his mouth found hers. On a triumphant groan, he claimed her, his lips sucking, his tongue penetrating. His big hand found her breast and kneaded at the soft mound.

And Alexa was right there with him. Moaning, kissing him, clutching on to him. Her thighs wrapped around his hips and her fingers twisted in his hair.

Tiny flashes of dim light spark in the darkened corners of my mind. Slowly, it turns from dusk to dawn, awakening my thoughts as the inner light grows brighter and brighter.
I hear a sound, a faucet running, and I realize it’s the blood rushing through my ears. When it reaches my heart I choke as it comes back to life like a bass drum. Boom. BaBOOM it beats, on and on, until it falls into a quick yet steady rhythm. The new life inside me grows louder, stronger, until death fades away and I awake on a gasp.
My eyes spring open. I try to take in air, but nothing happens. I try again and my lungs burn as they finally decide to cooperate. I can breathe, but it hurts like a son of a bitch.
I’m fucking alive.
My first thoughts shock the shit out of me. They’re of a girl. A sad looking girl with shiny black hair and huge dark eyes sitting on the edge of the water tower.
My heart falls out of rhythm, beating faster and faster until it’s thrumming against my chest like the vibration of a jackhammer.
Her.
Although my vision is blurry as shit, my thoughts of her are clearer than they’d ever been, and for the first time in my adult life, I’m fucking scared.
I don’t even need to see the big motherfucker standing over me with a baseball bat to know I am completely and totally fucked.
