TOUGH JUSTICE (K-9 Special Ops Series Book 1) by Tee O’Fallon

Publication Date: March 29, 2022

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Synopsis

0FF56DC6-3D37-4BD9-914A-15885C0BC145It should have been a routine investigation. Instead, DEA K-9 agent Adam “Deck” Decker watches in horror as one Denver hospital seems to be Ground Zero for overdoses of a new drug. Now Deck can only hope a certain icy, green-eyed ER doctor will help him and his canine partner track down the deadly source.

Dr. Tori Sampson has her reasons for not trusting federal agents, especially ones working for the DEA. But the rash of overdoses—including a heartbreaking case involving a teen—is alarmingly high. And the new opioid is not only extremely dangerous, it defies all the usual medical treatments. So Tori has a choice: work with the big, brawny, and annoyingly hot DEA agent…or watch more innocent people die.

Tori’s the only person who can help Deck break the case, and they’ll need to trust each other, no matter how high the tension and attraction sizzling between them runs. But with every question answered, they realize there’s something more behind these typical teen overdoses. There’s a pattern here, and a pattern can only suggest one thing. There’s a killer on the loose.

I’m a sucker for K-9 stories and was not disappointed in this one. This romantic suspense kept me glued to the pages and guessing until the end. The tension and danger around the string of opioid deaths was riveting and framed the romance nicely. The one downside for me was understanding two intelligent professionals harboring a general mistrust and hatred for certain professions. (I don’t want to give away any storyline.) It took me out of the story’s flow when it was brought up…a lot. Especially Tori’s particular dislike – the DEA were just doing their jobs.  (Ok, I’ll quit on that bit.)

The book was an enemies-to-lovers with a slow burn romance. Normally I like the physical stuff to move faster, but it worked for this story. Deck was the usual hot DEA Agent. I enjoyed his camaraderie with the other agents and his personality. He was my favorite kind of book hero. Tori was a strong and smart ER Doctor that could take care of herself. I liked that the only time she became a damsel in distress, was when she was out of her realm of experience. They made a good and realistic couple. Now – for my favorite character of this book – K-9 Officer Thor. I just loved that dog.

But the sexy vampire anti-hero in her new favorite medieval-esque TV show speaks to her. As in, he says her name while looking at her through the screen. Just when Gemma’s convinced she hallucinated the whole thing, she gets pulled into his world.

For over a century, Skarde Blackmann has roamed as a hunter-for-hire against evil creatures. The moment he begins to believe the prophecy about him is bogus, Gemma comes through a mirror. One slip up, one bite to the sassy woman who makes him laugh, and she’ll become a vampire—and condemn his soul to damnation. Not a problem; he’ll just keep his distance.

But when Gemma’s life is at stake, staying away is no longer an option…

This is my first novel by Zoe Forward, and it won’t be my last. I found Nightslayer to be a fun and quick paranormal romance. Gemma’s life was rooted in gritty reality despite her friend being a witch. I liked that about her – that friendship helped her deal with the odd circumstances that propelled her into a new reality. It was a hoot watching her ramble on about things and sayings we would understand but were completely foreign to those on the other side. That made it fun to watch the taciturn  Skarde struggle to maintain his reputation as the biggest badass around. The storyline seemed a bit rushed at parts, and some behavior made me want to smack them upside the head, but I still enjoyed the dangerous twists and turns around their friends and foes…especially the characters I wasn’t sure about. I hope the next books is about Skarde’s brother. That I would like to see.

PHANTOM GAME (A GhostWalker Novel Book 18) by Christine Feehan

Publication Date: March 1, 2022

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Synopsis

E2DF688F-0338-4633-879B-C04095471650Two predators collide with unbridled passion in this intoxicating GhostWalker novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan.

Jonas “Smoke” Harper has watched his brothers find their perfect mates, never imagining he’d actually meet someone who complements every part of him—even the monster that lurks within. But his instant connection with Camellia goes far beyond wanting the intelligent, beautiful, and lethal woman in his bed. They are two parts of a whole, linked to each other and to a larger network that exists everywhere around them.

Camellia has lived on her own for a long time, relying on her unique psychic abilities to keep her safe. She knows that Jonas was literally made for her, and that makes their addictive connection more dangerous than a thousand enhanced super soldiers. Once the larger threat looming over them is dealt with she’s going to get far away as fast as she can. Life has taught her that the only one she can truly trust is herself.

Jonas can sense Camellia is going to run—and the hunter inside doesn’t want to let go. Not when he knows how good they’ll be together. So he’ll just have to use all of his considerable skills to convince her to stay….

~*~*~*~

9C0F7809-58BB-4C10-90BE-5BCF72FB53CE

I enjoyed this installment in the GhostWalker series, especially since we get back to Team One again. I like the close-knit dynamic of that group and how they pull together during a crisis. The start of this book was a bit slow due to detailed descriptions of things that bogged it down for me. I would rather it had been more character driven. That feeling quickly changed as I came to appreciate how the author blended their personalities seamlessly as the story progressed.  Camellia was intelligent and self-driven, yet soft at heart. I’m glad that Jonas appreciated and was awed by her ability to accept and discover what her abilities were capable of doing. It was good to see him leaning on her for help with his own issues while still being strong. I’m usually not a fan of “fated love”, but they made it seem so natural and lovely.

The story itself was intense. Not so much physical battles, but battles that are unseen and can only be guessed at. The tension was fun and held me captive. I loved Jonas and Camellia’s unique abilities, it made for a fun and engrossing read. I won’t go into details on the storyline or their abilities, as I want the reader to make that journey without me giving it away. If it isn’t on the blurb…I am not going to share. Just know that I loved it.

Synopsis

5039B00E-2B05-4520-A7B4-AC76722FC6B2Things get textual when a steamy message from a random wrong number turns into an anonymous relationship in this hilarious rom-com by Lynn Painter.

Bad luck has always followed Olivia Marshall…or maybe she’s just the screw-up her family thinks she is. But when a “What are you wearing?” text from a random wrong number turns into the hottest, most entertaining—albeit anonymous—relationship of her life, she thinks things might be on the upswing….

Colin Beck has always considered Olivia his best friend’s annoying little sister, but when she moves in with them after one of her worst runs of luck, he realizes she’s turned into an altogether different and sexier distraction. He’s sure he can keep his distance, until the moment he discovers she’s the irresistible Miss Misdial he’s been sort of sexting for weeks—and now he has to decide whether to turn the heat up or ghost her before things get messy.

I was pulled into the story immediately by the witty banter and hilarious texts between Olivia and the wrong number. The writing style was also fast and lively, pulling you forward into the tale. Sadly, I did not like Olivia. Yes, she was a walking disaster, but her disregard for other people’s property bothered me. I kept reading in hopes that she would grow on me. She did not. Therefore, I never understood the attraction from Colin. This would have been one of my favorite stories if she had just been likeable. The back and forth between the characters did make me smile and laugh, so I am giving this book a 3.5. I’ll try this author again because I enjoyed her writing style and pace.

Now the man who lived his life as the quintessential “nice guy” must find a way to conquer the deadly urges that threaten to turn him feral. Alice Darlington has a secret of her own: she sees ghosts. She thought she’d done a good job of keeping it under wraps—until now. A terrible threat from her past is hunting her down in order to use her power for dark purposes. Now she’s on the run and doesn’t know who to trust or where to go.

When Hunter and Alice team up to battle the dangers coming at them from all sides, they’re forced to rely on each other. But Hunter doesn’t know how long he can keep the beast inside him away from the woman it craves…

Donna 5 Stars

I enjoyed this lovely escape from reality. Alice is understandably a bit quirky, which I enjoyed right away. Her pet rescue facility has a fun assortment of odd animals, which only adds to her likeability and the fun factor of the story. She and Hunter made a good couple, he appreciates her strengths even while trying to protect her. They each made the other stronger. Their romance edged a bit toward the too sweet side, but that was tempered with a sexiness I enjoyed.

There was danger directed at everyone, but it didn’t have me chewing my nails as I read. The suspenseful story wrapped wonderfully around the group dynamics of the vampires and werewolves. I loved their camaraderie and banter! It made me wish I were a part of it all.

It’s a fun quick read full of smiles, laughter, danger, and steamy romance. Now I need to go back and purchase book one while waiting for the next installment!

ONCE UPON A CABIN (Sweet Home, Alaska Book 2) by Patience Griffin

Publication Date: November 30, 2021

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

F84830E5-4777-4B8A-9EF4-FA205770F364Two sisters from Texas find themselves exiled to Alaska . . . and thrown into the arms of two very different men.

Tori and McKenna St. James have been living comfortably on their trust funds in Dallas. But their uncle Monty, keeper of the purse strings, decides to push them out of their comfort zones by requiring them to spend one year in Alaska or lose their inheritance. Initially the sisters are stunned, but they aren’t willing to back down from the challenge.

Tori is sent to a primitive homestead outside the tiny town of Sweet Home. She had been prepared to forego fashion magazines and lattes, but not electricity and running water! Will her rugged wilderness guide, Jesse Montana, teach her to survive, or send her fleeing back to civilization? Meanwhile, outdoorsy McKenna is stuck within the concrete walls of an Anchorage bank. Her sexy boss Luke McAvoy is tasked with teaching her the business but what he’s really doing is tempting her. Not that she’s the type to fall for a stuffed suit like him.

Tori and McKenna find much needed solace with Sweet Home’s Sisterhood of the Quilt. Will this crafty group of women be up to the challenge of teaching two outsiders how to sew—and perhaps how to love?

~*~*~*~

59B29AD9-207B-4633-A1D6-45D646BB766E

I enjoyed this book, it captivated me even through the holiday season chaos. Granted, the situation the women were thrust into seemed rather extreme – but it made for a fun escape. Tori was a prissy city girl that I planned to dislike and failed. I liked her and how she pushed herself to rough it in the wilderness despite obvious limitations. Jesse was her “teacher” for the adventure and a perfect match for her. He taught her how to survive without a feeling of rescuing or pampering her. He let her be strong. (I loved the homesteading tips strewn into the storyline.) Tori’s sister McKenna was a secondary romance within the story. This outdoorsy woman had to spend a year in the city to learn the banking business. Personally, I thought she got off easy, especially with Luke there to be her mentor. I wish both romances had a bit more depth in the emotions. It felt like I was told they were falling for each other instead of shown.

I love small town romances that also showcase the people that live there. How others treat the couples reinforces the character’s worthiness of caring. It also helps when the townspeople are fun and engaging. In closing, this is a fun romance. No sexy-time, but I didn’t miss it. I’ve found a new author.

DARK TAROT (A Carpathian Novel Book 35) by Christine Feehan

Publication Date: November 9, 2021

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Synopsis

3E303138-7BB4-4021-8977-765FF09BFEE6Light and dark combine as the cards reveal hidden truths in this intoxicating installment in Christine Feehan’s #1 New York Times bestselling Carpathian series.

Sandu Berdardi continues to exist only to protect his people. An ancient Carpathian, his entire long life has been dedicated to honor above all else. He knows his time has passed, especially since he has not been able to find his lifemate—the anchor to keep him sane in a world he no longer understands. But just as he truly starts to give up hope, a voice reaches out to him in the night and his world explodes into color.

Adalasia enters Sandu’s mind seamlessly, as if she has been a part of him forever. While she can see the shape of things to come in her deck of cards, her gift is both a blessing and a curse. The true course of Sandu’s quest remains unclear, with danger waiting at every turn. She cannot see everything the future holds, but she does know it is a journey they will take together.

By joining him, she will start them down a dangerous, seductive path from which there is no coming back….

~*~*~*~

8EFDC566-9513-422B-9FC7-564B903C39EA

I truly enjoyed this installment in the Dark series. It gave a nice angle to the normal Carpathian male finding his life-mate and dealing with the vampires. Lasia is a human with psychic abilities and training that make her a force unto her own. She fights demons and has been prepared for a lifelong quest to guard a portal. She is strong and intelligent, yet kind and compassionate. Just like a kick-ass heroine should be. Sander is an ancient, and if you’ve read the series, you know what that means. I love that he isn’t as pushy as some in the past stories. He appreciates her strengths and abilities, letting her do what she must to get the job done. Of course he has a hard time with it….but he does it.

This book also has a group of ancients along with them as they travel. They are mentally linked and manage to share in a small bit of emotion due to Lasia.  During their journey, they meet up with other Carpathians and give the reader a fun ride through all the danger with their camaraderie. Some of the location shifts seemed a bit abrupt, but I was able to immerse myself into the new location and characters. I enjoyed this long book. It was filled with a nice group dynamic, a lovely romance with super sexy times, intricate battles, and a possible lead-in to a new branch to the Carpathian saga.

Synopsis

45E82450-511C-4E69-ACF9-2C02CF16FDEBFalling for your best friend might be a recipe for disaster, but this small-town baker can’t help jumping from her pie pan into the fire.

Mila Bailey has always had a special talent for creating unique, show-stopping pies. But until her great-aunt leaves her the entry fee to the Pine Ridge Spring Bake-Off, she’s only ever shared them with friends and family. Thrust into the spotlight, Mila is determined to prove to everyone—but mostly herself—that she has what it takes to compete with top-level bakers. There’s only one flaw in her plan: The not-so-half-baked feelings she’s starting to develop for her best friend, Jared Kirkland.

Jared has always believed in Mila’s gifts, but lately he’s struggling not to fantasize about sampling more than just the spoon from the batter. No matter how much he tries to tell himself that Mila is not for him—his dreams have always reached beyond Pine Ridge—he can’t deny this new spark between them.

Mila embodies Pine Ridge, and Jared wants to break free. How can either of them move on knowing the loves of their lives have been right under their noses all along?

I enjoyed this contemporary romance. A friends-to-lovers story is always fun when the author can clearly show their long relationship without it feeling forced. The banter and camaraderie between them, and their friends, made me smile. I did get quite frustrated with both Jared and Mila during the progression of their romance. His visceral reaction to anything leading to marriage – his and others – was a bit absurd to me. At times, Mila’s reactions to Jared made me growl. However, they managed to have a steamy build to their relationship that I enjoyed. I liked my trip to Pine Ridge and look forward to visiting again. I’m hoping the next installment is for a certain new addition to this lovely town.

CHRISTMAS IN ROSE BEND (Rose Bend Series, Book 2) by Naima Simone

Publication Date: October 26, 2021

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

E965B88A-BFB2-4849-A68A-1DDAEB57DF61The holidays have never been her thing. But Christmas in Rose Bend has more than one surprise in store…

Grieving ER nurse Nessa Hunt is on a road trip with her sullen teen half sister, Ivy, and still reeling from her mother’s deathbed confession: Nessa’s dad wasn’t really her dad. Seeking answers, they arrive in Rose Bend to find a small town teeming with the kind of Christmas cheer Nessa usually avoids. But then she meets the innkeeper’s ruggedly sexy son, Wolfgang Dennison.

Wolf’s big, boisterous family is like a picture-perfect holiday card. Nessa has too much weighing on her to feel like she fits—even though the heat between her and Wolf is undeniable. And the merriment bringing an overdue smile to Ivy’s face is almost enough to make Nessa believe in the Christmas spirit. But with all her parental baggage, including lingering questions about her birth father, is there room in Nessa’s life for happy holidays and happily-ever-after?

~*~*~*~

Donna 4 stars

This was my first trip to Rose Bend, and happily did not have to read book one to become immersed in the town. (I will be purchasing book one for enjoyment.) I truly enjoyed the town and family members, having that kind of ensemble gives the main characters more depth and made knowing Wolf easier. Nessa was harder. She was visiting from Boston with her little sister and came across as cold and brittle. I’m glad there was enough insight into her character to keep me reading, mainly in regard to the relationship with her sister, Ivy and that resolution.  I did find both her and Wolf’s pasts and how they were dealing with it, rather depressing at times, but appreciated how they helped each other heal. I loved the building trust, friendship, and romance in their story. The few steamy scenes were just right. I once again have to mention the town and the numerous Christmas activities that made me smile. I couldn’t stop reading and although the ending happened rather quickly – I was totally satisfied.

USA Today Bestselling author Naima Simone’s love of romance was first stirred by Johanna Lindsey, Sandra Brown and Linda Howard many years ago. Well not that many. She is only eighteen…ish. Though her first attempt at a romance novel starring Ralph Tresvant from New Edition never saw the light of day, her love of romance, reading and writing has endured. Published since 2009, she spends her days–and nights– writing sizzling romances with a touch of humor and snark.

She is wife to Superman, or his non-Kryptonian, less bullet proof equivalent, and mother to the most awesome kids ever. They all live in perfect, sometimes domestically-challenged bliss in the southern United States.

CC2C2735-77BD-4AB1-8038-8591FA4A27FAThe most wonderful time of the year has arrived for this cowboy in New York Times bestseller Donna Grant’s newest novel, Home for a Cowboy Christmas.

Tis the season—for everyone except Emmy Garrett. She’s on the run after witnessing a crime. But when it becomes clear that trouble will continue following her, the US Marshal in charge takes her somewhere no one will think to look–Montana. Not only is Emmy in a new place for her protection, but now, she’s stuck with a handsome cowboy as her bodyguard…and she wants to do more than kiss him under the mistletoe.

Dwight Reynolds left behind his old career, but it’s still in his blood. When an old friend calls in a favor, Dwight opens his home to a woman on the run. He tries to keep his distance, but there’s something about Emmy he can’t resist. She stokes his passion and turns his cold nights into warm ones. When danger shows up looking for Emmy, Dwight risks everything to keep her safe.

Donna 4 stars

I liked this story. Emmy and Dwight were both people easy to like and understand. Their romance built smoothly and wasn’t bogged down with reluctance or misconceptions. The turmoil was from outside influences that both helped and added tension. The suspenseful danger of the story didn’t fully come into play until later in the book. By then, their romance had blossomed into a deep and sexy relationship. I enjoyed how it all flowed together seamlessly. Granted, the title had me expecting more of a Christmas story, but it did not disappoint in the happily-ever-after. It was a lovely feel-good story with just enough danger to keep my pulse up.

This book also has a bonus short story called WISH UPON A COWBOY. Cady and Zane were caught in a blizzard together. Their time in a cozy cabin was a whirlwind of hot insta-love. It was short, sweet and had me smiling after the story was over.
