JANE & EDWARD: A Modern Reimagining of Jane Eyre by Melodie Edwards

Publication Date: March 21, 2023

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

0FCA6F83-69CB-4667-9670-E68D8FEB1849This powerful reimagining of Jane Eyre, set in a modern-day law firm, is full of romance and hope as it follows the echoing heartbeats of the classic story.

A former foster kid, Jane has led a solitary life as a waitress in the suburbs, working hard to get by. Tired of years of barely scraping together a living, Jane takes classes to become a legal assistant and shortly after graduating accepts a job offer at a distinguished law firm in downtown Toronto. Everyone at the firm thinks she is destined for failure because her boss is the notoriously difficult Edward Rosen, the majority stakeholder of Rosen, Haythe & Thornfield LLP. But Jane has known far worse trials and refuses to back down when economic freedom is so close at hand.

Edward has never been able to keep an assistant—he’s too loud, too messy, too ill-tempered. There’s something about the quietly competent, delightfully sharp-witted Jane that intrigues him though. As their orbits overlap, their feelings begin to develop—first comes fondness and then something more. But when Edward’s secrets put Jane’s independence in jeopardy, she must face long-ignored ghosts from her past and decide if opening her heart is a risk worth taking.

I can’t believe this is a debut novel for Ms. Edwards. I loved it and could not put it down. I’ll admit that I don’t remember the storyline of Jane Eyre, so I was not stuck comparing different aspects of the story.

Jane was so calm on the outside, seeming to take life day by day. But on the inside her thoughts were spot on and relatable to me. I liked her immediately. I loved how she grew to find that she always had strength and courage inside her. Then there is Edward. He was a quirky and temperamental tornado that most saw as a jerk. But Jane and the reader saw through that early on. He too had his demons to overcome. I think they recognized and related to each other’s strengths and vulnerabilities. Yes, he screwed up badly, but I couldn’t dislike him for it. I even admired and understood Jane’s response. That made it a joy to see how the story resolved itself. Witty dialogue, fast paced writing, and a lovely romance.

IN ISABEAU’S EYES (Kentucky Nights Book 1) by Lora Leigh

Publication Date: March 21, 2023

Genre: Romantic Suspense/ Contemporary Romance

Synopsis291DE0A0-D8E2-492E-89C0-3E60A75DB276The first novel in a new series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lora Leigh—you’ve met the Mackays; now it’s time to meet their friends.

Danger is stalking Isabeau Boudreaux. After the deaths of her parents ten years ago during a violent attack that left her blind, remnants of her vision are returning. But a series of accidents has convinced her friends the Mackays of Somerset, Kentucky, that someone wants her dead. When a roadside blowout proves to be almost fatal for Isabeau and her good friend Angel, Angel’s brother mercenary Tracker Calloway knows this was no accident.

After a particularly bloody job, the last thing Tracker wants to do is get involved. But whoever is after Isabeau almost hurt his sister, and Isabeau is the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen. Tracker is determined to protect her but knows staying away from Isabeau is impossible. He begins a steady seduction to tempt the innocent woman into a world of hunger like she could have never imagined. And keeping her is the only option—if he can save her from an unknown enemy as her sight begins to slowly return.

~*~*~*~

Donna 4 stars

I liked Isabeau. She was strong and resilient, able to stand up for herself without being a harpy. Yes, she made some silly mistakes in judgement, but that is also part of the story. Tracker was Ms. Leigh’s typical alpha male (with all the good and bad thrown in). He appreciated her strengths and helped her along. As happens, there was no real build up to their romance and instead combusted rather quickly. I enjoyed their chemistry and didn’t mind their insta-lust. The story itself was exciting and yet a bit confusing. I wanted to rate this book a 5, but it all got rather convoluted with so many characters that were just there – like we were supposed to know who they were. The Mackays from the Nauti series were included in the book and it has been quite a while since I’ve read them. I should have gone back to refresh my memory as to the relationship. Then so many other characters that were treated as if I should know who they were and why they were there. Like I said – confusing. It brought me out of the story at times. Now that I have a feel for this series, I can’t wait for the next book.

Synopsis

E317A2B0-B81B-4309-A1B1-9CBC0D4E29C3Two people make a wager on who can find love first, not realizing what they should be betting on is each other, in this new romantic comedy by Lynn Painter, New York Times bestselling author of Mr. Wrong Number.

Hallie Piper is turning over a new leaf. After belly-crawling out of a hotel room (hello, rock bottom), she decides it’s time to become a full-on adult. She gets a new apartment, a new haircut, and a new wardrobe, but when she logs onto the dating app that she has determined will find her new love, she sees none other than Jack, the guy whose room she snuck out of.

After agreeing they are absolutely not interested in each other, Jack and Hallie realize they’re each other’s perfect wing-person in their searches for The One. They text each other about their dates, often scheduling them at the same restaurant so that if things don’t go well, the two of them can get tacos afterward.

Spoiler: they get a lot of tacos together.

Discouraged by the lack of prospects, Jack and Hallie make a wager to see who can find true love first, but when they agree to be fake dates for a weekend wedding, all bets are off. As they pretend to be a couple, lines become blurred and they both struggle to remember why the other was a bad idea to begin with.

I enjoyed this fast-paced witty story. Hallie and Jack were both people I identified with, and they had me grinning throughout their journey. The banter between them was easy and never felt forced for the sake of laughter. Their blossoming friendship pulled me in and kept me invested in their relationship. The sexy time was also fun and hot, making the story flow into a lovely romance. The friends and family around them added to the group camaraderie that I always enjoy in a book. The storyline was entertaining, even when some situations made my eyes roll.  A fun read that still has me smiling.

Jamie Westenberg and Bea Wilmot have nothing in common except a meet-disaster and the mutual understanding that they couldn’t be more wrong for each other. But when the people closest to them play Cupid and trick them into going on a date, Jamie and Bea realize they have something else in common after all—an undeniable need for revenge.

Soon their plan is in place: Fake date obnoxiously and convince the meddlers they’re madly in love. Then, break up spectacularly and dash everyone’s hopes, putting an end to the matchmaking madness once and for all.

To convince everyone that they’ve fallen for each other, Jamie and Bea will have to nail the performance of their lives. But as their final act nears and playing lovers becomes easier than not, they begin to wonder: What if Cupid’s arrow wasn’t so off the mark? And what if two wrongs do make a right?

I instantly enjoyed this romance. Loving how the author dealt with neurodivergent issues as well as those suffering from anxiety disorders. She didn’t digress into stereotypical anecdotes but kept it real and relatable.  Bea was quirky, fun, and loveable. It was a forgone conclusion that the anxiety ridden, uptight Jamie wouldn’t stand a chance. I became invested in them and their relationship fast. Each of them was socially awkward yet were able to find that tendril of connection in each other. The story had humor, friendship, love and angst from family, and above all – a sexy as all get out romance. I hope her sisters and friends get a book as well.

BETTER THAN FICTION by Alexa Martin

Publication Date: November 8, 2022

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Synopsis44F4DDB3-7196-43F1-8E99-70B0D55B09D9Love isn’t always by the book in this charming romantic comedy about a bookseller discovering how to be the main character in her story.

As a self-proclaimed book hater and a firm believer that the movie is always better, Drew Young didn’t anticipate inheriting her grandma’s bookstore, the Book Nook. She’s in way over her head even before the shop’s resident book club, comprising seven of the naughtiest old ladies ever, begin to do what they do best—meddle.

Bestselling author Jasper Williams is a hopeless romantic. When he meets Drew at his Book Nook signing event, he becomes determined to show her the beauty of reading. He curates a book bucket list in exchange for her help exploring the local Denver scene for his current manuscript. From going river rafting to trying local restaurants, Drew begins to connect with Jasper in a way she only thought happened in fiction.

When messy family ties jeopardize the future of the Book Nook, Drew is caught between a bookshelf and a hard place. She’s reminded that real life isn’t always big dreams and sweeping romance. But Jasper is the plot twist she never saw coming and he’s writing a happily ever after just for them.

6A12C2EC-CE7A-4EEB-9F3F-3CD31FA0F38D

I enjoyed the premise of this book. A non-reader inherits a bookstore and falls for a romance author. Add in the lively banter of close friends, and it increases the fun. Jasper, the author, was almost too good to be true. He was handsome, kind, and oh so sexy. He was the opposite of Drew in many ways, yet they clicked. I sure wish I liked Drew. She seemed a bit self-centered and caustic at times. Her friends and Jasper liked her, so I just went with the belief that it was just me that couldn’t warm up to her. This was a fun book with nice camaraderie, well written excursions into the Denver area, and sexy romance.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

SynopsisEE7F6641-F129-4F6A-8541-311117489733Space is the last thing an event planner and an astronaut need in this charming new romantic comedy from New York Timesbestselling author Samantha Young.

When event planner Hallie Goodman receives party-inspiration material from the bride of her latest wedding project, the last thing she expects to find is a collection of digital videos from Darcy’s ex-boyfriend. Hallie knows it’s wrong to keep watching these personal videos, but this guy is cute, funny, and an astronaut on the International Space Station to boot. She’s only human. And it’s not long until she starts sending e-mails and video diaries to his discontinued NASA address. Since they’re bouncing back, there’s no way anyone will ever be able to see them…right?

Christopher Ortiz is readjusting to life on earth and being constantly in the shadow of his deceased older brother. When a friend from NASA’s IT department forwards him the e-mails and video messages Hallie has sent, he can’t help but notice how much her sense of humor and pink hair make his heart race.

Separated by screens, Hallie and Chris are falling in love with each other, one transmission at a time. But can they make their star-crossed romance work when they each learn the other’s baggage?

~*~*~*~

600879C2-1C69-4EC1-B2D2-0B0162F86488

I enjoyed this sweet contemporary romance. The writing flowed and it was easy to switch from each first-person viewpoint. Chris was the astronaut yet didn’t have the cockiness that I thought he would have. He was likeable with a vulnerability that I found endearing. Hallie was not only an over-the-top people pleaser, she was also a magnet for mayhem. Despite seeming a bit immature at times, it made me chuckle. They were each successful in their careers while being unsure of their futures. In other words….normal. They made a lovely couple.

I enjoyed watching their relationship grow into a sexy romance. Nothing felt rushed or forced. There were some predictable parts that made my eyes roll (especially her parents), however it did not ruin the story for me. Overall, it is a feel-good and charming romance.

DARK WHISPER (A Carpathian Novel, Book 36) by Christine Feehan

Publication Date: October 11, 2022

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Synopsis

1B0C9AFE-138C-43DD-A349-9E49B8C9DBA6Embrace the seductive call of the latest novel in Christine Feehan’s #1 New York Times bestselling Carpathian series.

Vasilisa Sidkorolyavolkva is a Lycan of royal blood. She knows what is expected of her, but all she wants is to be out from under her family’s watchful eyes. There is a fire inside her that is building. A restlessness coupled with a sense of growing dread. Every day she feels the weight of the legacy passed down through generations. The prophecy that says a man will come to claim her as his mate, and that she will guard his soul. She knows nothing about him except that he is hers. But nothing seems real until the night she meets him in the flesh….

Afanasiv Belan is a Carpathian, an ancient one. In all the centuries of his existence, no one has ever affected him like Vasilisa. He can see into her mind and feel what is in her heart. They are so alike, warriors bound by honor and plagued by secrets. They both know they must reveal the darkest parts of their souls if they hope to survive and protect the ones they love.

But if they claim each other as lifemates, it will change them down to the bone. They will become something more—something feared by both of their kinds….

~*~*~*~

600879C2-1C69-4EC1-B2D2-0B0162F86488

This book involved so many character groups and back histories. Carpathians, traitors, vampires, mages, dragonseekers, puppets, lycans, demons, Lilith, etc. Despite some areas being a bit convoluted, other parts of the book dragged for me. A lot of repetition on the who and what. This was not one of my favorite Carpathian novels due to the lack of a real romance. Vasi and Siv each accepted that they were fated mates and went with it – although a romantic story never really developed. The book was more information and fights. I did score this a 4 because it had a lot of interesting information that will no doubt help in the next installment, and I had no trouble reading the whole thing.

BAYOU SWEETHEART (Butterfly Bayou Series Book 5) by Lexi Blake

Publication Date: July 26, 2022

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

571AF4D1-942D-45AB-BBCF-49CDAF9F3C67Sparks fly in Louisiana’s Butterfly Bayou when a Hollywood starlet falls for a local deputy in a small-town contemporary romance from New York Times bestselling author Lexi Blake.

After leaving the military, Major Blanchard moved to Papillon, Louisiana, to be with his aging father, where he’s taken a deputy position with the sheriff’s department. Now that he’s settling into life on the bayou, he’s trying out the dating scene. Every single woman in town seems to be pining after the handsome newcomer. But so far, nothing’s worked out, and he’s had some spectacularly bad dates. Major’s getting ready to give up on love when a new lady roars into town to film a movie and turns his world upside down.

Actress Brynn Pearson is trying to make a successful transition from child star to leading lady. Now that she’s landed her first lead in a major film, nothing can stop her. She’s committed to focusing solely on her work, so romance is the last thing she needs—too bad she can’t get her mind off the dreamy deputy she keeps running into. He’s gorgeous, and something about him makes her feel safe. As Brynn’s feelings for Major deepen, she starts to wonder if maybe there’s more to life than her career.

When a family crisis throws Major’s life into a tailspin, he turns to Brynn for support, and hopes their budding relationship will shine brighter than Hollywood lights.

~*~*~*~

9C0F7809-58BB-4C10-90BE-5BCF72FB53CE

I completely enjoyed this contemporary romance. Major (yes, that is his name) instantly grabbed my attention because of his inner dialogue during the opening scene, then he never let go. Even when he sometimes acted like “an annoying man”, I couldn’t get mad at him. Thankfully he had his perfect match in Brynn. She was also likeable and someone I could relate to. They were both just coasting through life with no time to realize they weren’t really living. I loved their journey of not only love but finding themselves and inner happiness.

The flirty banter between Brynn and Major, and camaraderie between the townspeople and friends made this a book I couldn’t put down. Especially those characters that kept me wondering if I liked them or not. It all blended into a lovely story about family, friendship, small town life, and finding true happiness when you least expect it. The epilogue was a perfect ending….I’m still smiling.

RED ON THE RIVER by Christine Feehan

Publication Date: June 28, 2022

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Synopsis

4F6A7A5A-B9CB-4E81-A5C9-5DF6316AB679#1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan goes all in with this sexy romantic thriller set among the dangers—both man-made and natural—of Nevada’s breathtaking landscape.

Vienna Mortenson isn’t your typical gambler. She prefers to stay under the radar, using her poker winnings to support her family and her community, including the local search and rescue team, which she heads up. Out in the backcountry there’s no time for hesitation when lives are on the line. Vienna prides herself on being tough and decisive. She’s not the sort to make a fool of herself over a guy, especially one who left her high and dry without a backward glance.

Vizzini’s job constantly puts him in harm’s way. Working undercover and disappearing for months at a time isn’t exactly a recipe for a stable relationship. Despite the challenges and the risks, Zale wants something real with Vienna. He just needed time to figure out how to be in her life without putting her in danger. Now, he’s determined to win her back, and he’s ready to lay all his cards on the table.

As their friends’ wedding approaches, Zale takes advantage of the festivities to make a play for Vienna’s heart. But there are more deadly forces waiting to strike in the rugged terrain of Nevada and the western Sierras. Soon both of their lives are threatened, and the odds are stacked against them….

~*~*~*~

600879C2-1C69-4EC1-B2D2-0B0162F86488

This was an interesting mystery/thriller. I just love the camaraderie between Vienna and her girlfriends. It adds a fun and easy contrast to the stoic operatives surrounding them. We met these people in Murder at Sunrise Lake, but it is a stand-alone story and the reader can easily get to know the characters, especially when the girlfriends get together and chat.

I liked Vienna and her complex life story. Her unique extrasensory gift added a nice element to the story as well. Her likeability and relatability was secured by her friends instead of her love interest. I didn’t really get a connection to Zale. He wasn’t a constant fixture in the story, and when he was, it wasn’t enough to feel their connection. They did seem to compliment each other’s strengths – so there is that.

The suspenseful story did keep me guessing and I was satisfied with how it all played out. And I’ll let you know that you will learn a lot about playing cards and rock climbing. This was listed as a romantic thriller, but I think it is more a thriller with romantic elements – still enjoyable and held my interest until the end.

Perhaps it’s for the best. The thirty-one-year-old has poured her heart and soul into her business and doesn’t have time for anything—or anyone—else. And that’s something not even the gorgeous older brother of her newest client can change…right?

All Travis Long wanted was to give his little sister, Sheena, the wedding of her dreams. Ever since the tragic death of their parents, he’s done everything he can to make her feel loved and give her everything she needs. Still…a country wedding? In a place called Cemetery? But Yardley seems to know exactly what to do and how to do it—and Travis finds himself falling for her a little more each day.

Soon Yardley and Travis find themselves being nudged together by well-meaning locals who want to see the town’s favorite wedding planner get her own happy ending.

This book is a lovely contemporary romance that will leave me smiling for a while. It centers around Yardley, a wedding planner that dreams of carving out a happy place for herself while catering to the needs of everyone else. I have to comment that she was a little too sweet and perfect for me. She reminded me of an old-time Disney princess. Thankfully her best friend gave the angst I needed. Travis leaned toward the “too good to be true” vibe as well. But hey, they made a great couple and along with the quirky town, fun banter, and a roving mannequin, it all blended into a delightful summer romance. I’m curious about who will be next in the series.
