Publication Date: February 16, 2016

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

imageIn the new Play-By-Play novel by the New York Times bestselling author of All Wound Up, a football hot shot and his best friend’s sister are breaking all the rules.

All the Right Moves

For Barrett Cassidy, playing defense for the Tampa Hawks is a dream come true. And now he may have discovered his dream woman. Harmony Evans, once the sweet, gawky teenage sister of his best friend and teammate has grown into a smart, gorgeous woman with moves he finds hard to resist. But he knows he can’t get involved with his best friend’s sister—it’s guy code.

Harmony has always gone after what she wants with single-minded determination, from her independence to her education to her career in interior design. She never expected her youthful crush on Barrett to develop into something deeper. And she’s not about to let some ridiculous man rules or her brother stand in her way.

When the chemistry is this combustible, lines tend to get crossed. And when Barrett and Harmony’s secret gets out, it just might be game over…

Donna 4 stars

This Play-by-Play novel was filled with hot football players and their large loud families. I loved them all immediately and how it made you feel like you were a part of them. I also liked that it didn’t get bogged down in football jargon but had enough references that you remembered who and what they were. It was fun, the romance was super-hot and I liked the happily-ever-after. There was some repetitive paragraphs but that didn’t take away from the overall story. Ms. Burton made a fun group of people and I am looking forward to the next one to find their love.

Publication Date: February 2, 2016

Genre: Historical Romance

Synopsisimage

Passion flares between enemies

Two hotheaded Highlanders, the offspring of feuding lairds, are tricked by the King’s Regent into a desperate choice: marry or die. Bhaic MacPherson is more disposed to lead his clan into battle than stay married to the daughter of his enemy. But perhaps the intensity of his feelings has more to do with desire than hostility.

And the Highlands ignite

Ailis Robertson wanted a husband, not a savage—but when her family was faced with a deadly ultimatum, she had no choice. The union of a MacPherson and a Robertson could end three generations of hostilities between the two families, but can bitter rivals truly become lovers?

This February marks the release of Highland Spitfire, the first in Mary Wine’s new Highland Weddings series! To celebrate, Mary joins us on the blog to share an excerpt and answer a quick either/or question.

Question: Ice cream or cake?

Answer: If you’ll give me frosting on my ice cream, that would be perfect.

Excerpt

“The Crown and the king will no longer tolerate unrest in the Highlands.” Morton informed them all.
“What are ye planning on doing?” her father demanded. “Killing us all?” He chuckled ominously. “Ye’ll nae be the first nobleman who fails at that task.”
The Abbey was full of amusement, the sound bouncing between the dark stone walls.
“Come here, Mistress,” the earl demanded.
Ailis wanted to refuse, but that felt cowardly. Bhaic was standing up to the man, so she would as well.
“Stay where ye are, Daughter,” her father ordered.
She stood, earning another round of laughter from the MacPhersons.
“Seems ye are as good at teaching yer children respect as ye are at fighting, Robertsons!”
Ailis turned around, her skirts flying up to reveal her ankles. She glared at Bhaic MacPherson.
“I am no more afraid of this lowlander than ye are.” She said in a tone that would have pleased even her stern tutor. Her voice was even and her chin steady without a hint of sharpness, just clear determination.
The grin on his face faded and for just a moment, his expression became one of approval. But she turned and walked toward the earl. She had to fend off the impulse to perform a reverence because it was such an ingrained courtesy. But he would not receive such politeness from her—even if he was a nobleman. There were plenty who would warn her against such prideful ways, but she had been raised in the highlands. Respect was earned. And the Earl had abandoned polite behavior, so she would as well.
“I’ll not be lowering meself before a man who ordered a blade put to me throat.” She spoke evenly once more.
His lips twitched in response. For a moment, he studied her, running his gaze up and down her length. When his eyes locked with hers again, there was a pleased look flickering in them. He was different than the other noblemen she’d met. There was a rough edge to him that struck a warning bell inside her. He was ruthless and unashamed of it. This man had not been raised with servants trailing his heels. He’d dirtied his hands more than once. She was certain of it.
That made him very dangerous.
“Look through those windows, Mistress, and tell me what you see.”
A knot was tightening in her belly, pulling tighter as she turned and looked where he pointed. Beyond the sides of the Abbey, there were more of the earl’s men, set apart by their britches. They held a line of horses steady beneath thick tree branches; more men stood ready with nooses above the animals.
She felt like her throat was closing shut.
“Have you lost your courage lady?” the earl inquired.
“I have nae,” she countered, but her voice cracked, betraying her horror.
“Enough. Let the lass be.” Bhaic stood back up. “If ye want a fight, man, I’ll be happy to give it to ye, since ye’ve gone to so much trouble to get us all here.”
“Like hell!” her father argued. “She’s me daughter and I’ll be the one doing the fighting, since me sons are nae here.”
Ailis gulped down a breath and fought to find her strength before her father lunged across the pews at Bhaic.
And unleashed a blood bath.
“There are a row of horses with nooses dangling above the empty saddles,” Ailis forced out. “Every detail set for an execution.”
The Abbey went silent as her words reached every last man. All hints of teasing dissipated, and more than one man looked at the gunners and began to judge his chances. Better to die trying to live than wait for someone to slap the flank of a horse while you felt the bite of the noose around your neck.
“This feud ends here,” the earl informed them. “None of ye recall the reason it began.”
“I do too.” her father insisted. “It was a MacPherson who murdered me grandfather.”
“Only after he tried to steal the bride of me own grandfather!” Shamus MacPherson argued, pointing at Liam Robertson. “But it was the money he was trying to steal the most.”
“Me kin are nae thieves.” her father roared. “She found yer grandfather’s bed cold and that’s a fact!”
Suddenly the men in the pews didn’t care about the guns trained on them. They were ready to tear each other limb from limb. Over three hundred Highlanders began to surge to their feet, but a blast from one of the rifles sobered them. The scent of the black powder was thick, mixing with the beeswax.
“You will end this feud,” the earl demanded. “Scotland needs unity. England’s virgin queen is earning the wrath of most of the continent with her Protestant ways. If we do not want to find ourselves invaded, we will present a united front to the rest of the world. There will be peace between the MacPhersons and the Robertsons so that we might all be Scots.”
“I suppose if ye hang us all, there might be.” It was Bhaic who spoke up, his voice strong and steady.
“I find meself agreeing with a MacPherson,” her father groused. “May me father forgive me and no rise from his grave to torment me.”
The earl was looking at her. She felt the weight of his gaze, the knot in her belly becoming unbearable.
“Your father’s fate is in your hands, Mistress. I leave the choice to you, since they are still intent on fighting even with the odds clearly against them.”

This is another exciting edition to the elite military series of the Night Stalkers. The beginning got a little bogged down in military jargon and acronyms but I urge you to read through it because the story is exciting and romantic. Normally I roll my eyes at the southern accent jokes but nothing made me roll my eyes at Justin, a sexy strong Texan. He sure met his match in Yankee Kara and her Italian New York family, I would have loved more time with them but a taste was very much appreciated. I love the team and the camaraderie, their dangerous missions that keep you on the edge of your seat and of course the smoking hot romance. Buchman is on my must read list.

This February, M. L. Buchman raises the stakes—and the heat—in By Break of Day, the latest in his acclaimed Night Stalkers series. To celebrate Buchman joins us on the blog to share an excerpt and answer a quick Q&A!

image

Do you intend to write your characters with certain personalities or do things “just happen?”

It’s a mixture. In the early stages of brainstorming a book, I’ll poke around at ideas for a new character until one steps forward that seems as if they’d be fun to write. Sometimes I suspect that I might have written them before, but my subconscious must weed that out because I’ve been proven wrong every time when I get to the writing. From there, it is a voyage of discovery.

Excerpt

Captain Justin Roberts flies a massive Chinook twin-rotor helicopter. Captain Kara Moretti flies a drone and is trying out to be the Air Mission Commander during a training exercise.

Captain Justin Roberts gave the collective control between his knees a little nudge forward. Fifteen tons of helicopter carrying a platoon of U.S. Rangers and their gear eased forward as smooth as a baby’s behind.
Every single time he flew his big MH-47G “Golf” Chinook helicopter, it was a surprise—a surprise of how much fun it was. Like they were meant for each other since long before they met.
SOAR only flew three primary types of helos, all deeply modified to the 160th’s specification. The Little Bird, the Black Hawk, and the Chinook Golf. His girl was the monster of the outfit. Calamity Jane was definitely a Texas-sized lady: big, powerful, and dangerous.
“I feel the need for a song.”
“Oh God, spare us.” Danny Corvo spoke up from the copilot seat. From there he was Justin’s second set of eyes and the master of the helo’s general health and well-being.
“Oh, give me a home,” Carmen cut in from her position at the starboard gun close behind Justin’s seat.
Carmen Parker was hot shit with an M134 minigun that could unload four thousand rounds-a-minute of hell on anyone who messed with her. She was also king, er, queen of the bird—the absolute last word on maintenance and loading.
“Where the Chinook helos roam.” Talbot George was always off-key at the side gun behind Danny’s copilot position, but he sang with heart, even if with a distinctly British accent.
“And the flights are at night every day,” the three of them sang together in splendidly awful harmony.
Danny groaned as if in the throes of death-by-torture agony.
As usual, Raymond Hines kept his own counsel at the rear ramp gunner’s post. The Chinook was the size of a school bus inside. Tonight, in the cargo area between the cockpit and Ray’s rear post, thirty U.S. Rangers and their three ATVs were counting on SOAR to sling them into position. The big rotors fore and aft let her lift her own weight in cargo; even in high-hot conditions the Chinook outperformed most everything around.
By the third chorus their harmonies were better, so Justin hit the transmit switch for the last of it. It got the answering transmission he was hoping for.
“Justin, honey?”
“Here for you, sweetheart.” Kara Moretti just slayed him. From the first briefing where she’d moseyed in all dark and Italian and perfect, his head had been turned hard enough that he kept checking his neck for whiplash. Then when she opened her mouth and poured out thick Brooklyn… Two months later and he still didn’t know what to do with that, not a bit of it. It was all… wrong, yet it was so right. Her voice should be some sweet bella signora, like the one he’d spent a week with while stationed at Camp Darby outside of Pisa on the Italian coast a couple years back.
Instead Kara was—
“You do that to me again and you’re gonna be singing soprano the rest of your life. We clear, Cowboy?”
—a hundred percent, New York. “Y’all wouldn’t do that to me now, would ya?” He laid it on thick.
“Castrate the bull calf? In a heartbeat. And I ain’t your sweetheart.”
“I’ll hold him down while you trim ’em,” Lola Maloney called in from the DAP Hawk.
He was about to say something about how it made the meat taste more luscious and tender—which was why they castrated most bull calves—but he couldn’t figure out how to phrase it without it sounding crude and perhaps tempting her to start looking for some neutering shears when Trisha cut in.
“Roger that! We’ll pin him, you chop and cauterize. Use a really hot iron.”
Claudia Jean Gibson at the controls of the Maven II didn’t speak much, but he could feel her out there agreeing with them.
Justin winced in imagined pain, as he was sure every man on the comm circuit did. He figured maybe it would be better if he kept his mouth shut. Once the women of the 5D got on a roll, wasn’t no man on God’s green earth who was safe.

Donna 4 stars

A good blend of wolf shifters, Navy SEALS and protecting those you serve. I like this series and am glad this was another well written installment with danger at every turn. This story was about Allan falling for a human. I was glad that he didn’t just ignore the chemistry that was brewing between him and Debbie or try to make her mad so she would give up. It was a very nice change and led to some pretty sexy encounters. Ms. Spear writes her characters realistically so there is always something to relate to so you feel more a part of things. I look forward to the next installment and hope someday Rowdy will get his turn.

Excerpt

He pulled out a couple of mugs while she warmed up the cocoa. He chuckled and she turned to see what was funny and nearly had a heart attack.
He was holding one hot pink and white mug while reading it, the other sitting on the counter: Men should be like my curtains, easy to pull and well hung.
Her lips parted, she had to have turned cherry red, and she turned away quickly before she burned the cocoa. Now what? Explain that a friend had given them to her when her last boyfriend and she had parted company? Or just ignore the fact that they were drinking out of those cups while she was having hot cocoa with him and pretend she wasn’t embarrassed to the tip of her toes?
He brought the mugs over. “Anything else?”
“There’s a can of whipped cream in the fridge, if you want some.”
“Real cream,” he said, eyeing the can. “Looks good.” He gave it to her, and he lifted the mugs.
She shook up the can and pointed it at the right mug, pushed the nozzle, and the cream dripped and fizzled. Not to be thwarted, she shook it again, hoping that it wasn’t defective. And then the whipped cream swirled around with perfect ridges in a twirl on top with a cute little pointy peak. Perfect.
Then she turned to the other mug, shook the can again, and pushed the nozzle. It was working great until halfway through her little mountain of whipped cream twirling to perfection, when the nozzle malfunctioned again and spewed whipped cream everywhere.
In horror, she stopped what she was doing and stared at the white cream splattered all over Allan’s chest and a few that had dotted his boxer briefs. Her mouth agape, she glanced up at him.
His eyes sparkled with mirth and he laughed.
“Oh, oh, let me get something to wipe it up,” she said, belatedly, and set the can of whipped cream on the counter.
She grabbed some paper towels and wetted them, then rushed back to wipe the mess up. He was still holding onto both hot pink mugs of cocoa. She had every intention of taking one of the mugs and letting him clean himself, but he just moved his arms apart as if to say she made the mess, she could wash it up.
She thought she was going to die. Yes, he was totally hot. And yes, she’d fantasized about making love to him—since they were both unattached, and she truly liked him. But in her wildest dreams she would never have imagined making him cocoa in the middle of the night in her duplex while he stood in sexy silk briefs, not baggy, but nice and form fitting, and then she proceeded to splatter him with whipped cream. All over his tanned chest and those black briefs.

Nick dove into the truck’s cab. “Go, go!”

“Fuck!” Shane punched the accelerator and pulled the truck into a hard U-ey. Another round hit the back quarter panel.

“Get down, Becca,” Nick said as he reached for the Glock at the small of his back. But she was way ahead of him, tucked in a ball on the floor behind his seat. He didn’t have a clear shot of anything, especially with chaos already breaking out around the ER’s entrance as people dove for cover and the couple of on-site police officers rushed into defensive positions.

In what felt like long minutes but was only a few seconds, they were clear of the area. Shane ran a red light to get them away from the hospital altogether.

Twisting in his seat, Nick looked out the cab’s rear window. “Watch for a tail.”

“On it,” Shane said. “You need to alert the team, Vance, Chen.”

“Yeah,” Nick said, but first he needed to check on Becca. Christ, every reassurance he’d offered the past week had just been blown to shit. His gut was a wreck, his mind unhelpfully crafting one horror story after another about what might’ve happened if Chen hadn’t called. Or if Nick hadn’t returned to the hospital immediately. Or if Coleman hadn’t been able to pull Becca off the floor. “Becca, are you okay?”

“I don’t know,” she said, her voice shaky. When she looked up at him, her skin was ashen. He reached back and clutched her hand as he dialed Marz.

“Yo, hoss, wassup?” Marz said.

“We’ve got a situation,” Nick said, filling him in. “Let everyone know what’s going on. And if you have a chance, scan the security feeds around our neighborhood looking for anything potentially suspicious. We’ve been keeping an eye out for the wrong damn car.”

“You got it,” Marz said.

Nick had just hung up when his cell rang again. Chen. Nick put it on speaker.

“I heard about the hospital. You okay?” Chen asked by way of a greeting. Nick wasn’t surprised that Chen had information that was only minutes old.

“Yeah, we’re in one piece,” Nick said. “But it was fucking close. Too close.”

MIDNIGHT REVENGE: A Killer Instinct Novel by Elle Kennedy

Publication Date: February 2, 2016

Genre: Romantic Suspense/ Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

imageFrom the USA Today bestselling author of Midnight Captive, the latest Killer Instincts novel is “off-the-charts-hot”* romantic suspense that takes readers into the heart of an enigmatic mercenary…

Out of all the stone-cold mercenaries in Jim Morgan’s black ops organization, Derek “D” Pratt is the most intimidating. He is tight-lipped and covered in tattoos, and even the other guys on his team are afraid to ask him about his past. D’s been off the grid for years, but after his teammate Sullivan is mistakenly captured in his place, D is forced to come out of hiding and face his demons.

When D lands in Mexico, he’s ready to risk everything to save his friend. To complicate matters, Sofia Amaro, a feisty doctor whom D had a one-night stand with months ago, has tracked him down. And in an instant she’s unintentionally caught up in his life-threatening rescue mission.

Now D must extract not one but two people from the most violent world he’s ever encountered. And one of them is carrying his child…

I loved it! Loved it! Elle Kennedy meet ripped my heart out with this one then handed back to me all mended at the of the story. Midnight Revenge is an action packed, gritty and emotional smoking hot romantic suspense. D’s story tugged at my heartstrings. He seemed cold and emotionless but the more I discovered about him while reading his story the more I loved him.

“For once in your life, can’t you let someone in?”
He began to laugh. Low, humorless laughter that brought a chill to the already cold cell. “You think if you know what happened to me you’ll magically be able to figure me out? Fix me? Baby, nobody can fix me. I’m broken beyond repair.”

Midnight Revenge is part of Elle Kennedy’s Killer Instincts Series, but it can be read as a standalone. I recommend the entire series though. It’s full of hot alpha males and likable heroines the reader can root for. If you haven’t read this series yet go grab them and settle in for a good binge read. This series is on my list of favorite romantic suspenses and one I recommend for all romantic suspense lovers. Elle Kennedy knows how to weave a great love story.

SPIDER GAME (Ghost Walker Series) by Christine Feehan

Publication Date: January 26, 2016

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Synopsis

imageIn a world so dark and seductive, expect nothing less than a triple-cross in the explosive all-new Ghostwalker novel by #1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan…

The Cajun dive in the middle of the godforsaken swamps wasn’t exactly Trap Dawkins’ idea of fun. But the GhostWalker wasn’t there for a good time. He was looking for her. Cayenne. It’s where she found her victims. Poor suckers. Then again, who wouldn’t want to leave a place like this with a woman like her?

It’s not Cayenne’s fault. Locked up, experimented on and never knowing kindness, she was bred this way—with a heart of pure venom. Trap understands her. He survived his own dark past and he shares her desire for getting even. But now Trap’s greatest danger is Cayenne herself. Because what’s inside her is hard to control—especially when it’s aroused by a lover as reckless as Trap.

Donna 4 stars
I liked Cayenne and enjoyed how she slowly adapted to her new life. It was fun to see her learn things that we take for granted. She and Trap made a great couple but only because she had far more patience than I would. He bordered on unbearable a time or two but she somehow worked through it. While they fired up their relationship, outside forces were at work to destroy the GhostWalkers, especially her. I appreciated that the danger was a little different this time and made it unpredictable. Another scorching hot romance filled with suspense and danger.

Water Texture Under Water

Excerpt
My hands wander down to his forearms. “You want me now today, or forever? Or maybe a time in between those two?”
“Always. Always, Fast Lane. I want you forever. This is hard for me, too. Sharing isn’t a word in my repertoire.” It shouldn’t be in mine either. His gaze darts to the water on the side of my house. My island doesn’t feel as safe as it did five minutes ago.
Focusing on the task at hand, I lean my head against his chest. “I need to break up with Dax.” I don’t need to explain. I owe it to Dax to keep the explanations for him. I feel Cody’s hand in my hair and his kiss on the top of my head.
“I’m sorry for this.” His voice is low and coiled with control. “I’d deal with it if I could. I’d make the pain go away if there was a way.”
I shake my head. “It’s my fault. I never stopped loving you, Cody. I should have. My, God I should have.” I look up to meet his gaze, ice blue, so much like Dax’s.
“He saved me, but you own me.”
With the hands that are still in my hair, he brings my face up to meet with his, our lips touching in the barest flutter of a kiss. Not enough to taste him, but enough to know he’s mine right back. “Be mine again. All mine.” There’s that word again. I think of Dax.
“That’s the problem,” I say, my lips touching his as I speak. “I’ve never not been yours, Cody.” He kisses me madly, profoundly, passionately. Cody takes my hips and pulls me against his erection. It throbs into my stomach, causing my core to clench with desire. Every nerve ending in my body fires. I feel tingly. I feel warm. I feel him.

Excerpt James awoke with a start, wincing as a stabbing pain sliced through his throbbing skull. He turned his head only to find himself struggling to overcome an attack of light-headedness. Blackness whirled around him, forcing him to shut his eyes and press his head against the pillow.
Deep breaths, deep breaths.
Gradually, the fog surrounding him eased, replaced by an onslaught of agony so sharp it stole the breath from his body. Every inch of him, from his scalp to his toes, ached and throbbed with a fiery pain. Dizzy and sweating, James pulled himself into a sitting position, only to immediately slump back down.
Bloody hell, what’s wrong with me?
He did not want to open his eyes, but finally, slowly, he did. Thoughts churning, he lifted the blanket covering his naked body. James glanced down and cringed, his blurry eyes taking in the sight of bloody bandages swathing his arm, chest, belly, and legs. He blew out another puzzled breath, but then suddenly his throat seized as faint memories of the attack filled his aching head.
“Davina,” he whispered.
Tears filled the corners of his eyes. He eased himself upright, the ropes beneath the mattress squealing in protest when he moved. The sound tore through his head, but he fought through the pain.
Leaning gingerly against the headboard, James searched his scattered memory for details. They had met on the hilltop, in their secret place. Davina had smiled and teased and kissed him with her usual passion and excitement. His heart had been near bursting with emotion when he asked her to be his wife and when she had agreed—och, his joy had been boundless.
But then . . . then . . . they had been set upon by brigands. A foul group of outlaws intent on causing them harm. He had fought fiercely, had killed several of them, but there were too many to defeat. He remembered striking his final opponent in the heart with his dirk, but after that there was only blackness.
What happened to Davina? Had she escaped? Been kidnapped? Been killed?
Ignoring the pulsing pain racking his body, James again whispered his beloved’s name, then began shouting,
“Davina! Davina!”
The bedchamber door flew open. The silhouette of a burly man loomed in the doorway. “Are ye awake?”
“Aye,” James croaked. He felt appallingly weak and confused.
“I’ll get the laird.”
The man left before James could question him. Frustrated, James forced himself to remain calm. Finally, laird Armstrong entered the chamber, two men at his side. James recognized one of them as the captain of the guard. The other was unknown to him.
“I see ye’ve decided to join the living again,” Laird Armstrong said, his booming voice rattling James’s aching head.
Ignoring the expression of discontent clouding the laird’s features, James asked, “Where is Davina?”
“She’s confined to her bed.” The laird’s eyes grew dark. “She’s in a terrible, disgraceful state. Bruised and beaten. She shudders with nightmares, cries out in terror. My men found ye both miles from the castle, struck down and bleeding. What happened?”
Davina lives! James’s heart beat with elation, followed swiftly by sadness. Alive, aye, yet badly injured.
“We were attacked,” James replied.
“By who?”
“Brigands. Outlaws.”
“My men saw no one. There was no looting in the village, no crops destroyed, no cattle stolen.” The laird lifted his brow. “What can ye tell us of them?”
James took a deep breath, shuddering at the searing pain it caused in his chest. “There were six men. None wore plaids or carried shields with clan markings. They surprised us.”
“I can only imagine what ye were doing in such a private, secluded place with my niece that caused ye to be so distracted,” Laird Armstrong growled.
James grit his teeth and jerked his head in denial. He would not stand for Davina’s honor to be questioned, even by her own kin. “I love Davina. I would never do anything to compromise her honor or virtue.”
Laird Armstrong snorted in disbelief. “Six men trained his men better.”
He did. Guilt, swift and sudden, stabbed through James. He lowered his chin in shame. “The men were on foot, not horseback. They had the advantage of surprise when they ambushed us.”
The laird’s eyes sparked with sudden anger. “We’ve not had any trouble with brigands on our lands fer years.”
“Not while Robert the Bruce was king,” the captain of the guard added.
James nearly shouted in frustration. He had no care for the political implications of the attack. His main concern was finding the criminals and punishing them for hurting Davina.
“It could have been a group of English scum,” the other man suggested.
“We’re too far north for the English to be troubling us,” the laird insisted.
“Nay, they were Scots. I could tell by their swords; to a man they carried Claymores.” James’s voice felt choked and tight. “I killed two of them and wounded two others. After that . . .” he said, his voice trailing off in confusion.
“We found no bodies,” the captain of the guard challenged. James drew in a ragged breath, fighting the need to argue. “They must have taken the dead and wounded away.”
“Two men took four others away?” the laird asked incredulously.
James shook his head and stared across the chamber. He had no answers to give, no explanations that made sense. “What did Davina tell ye?”
The laird shot him a sidelong look. “She cannae speak of the incident without becoming hysterical.”
James cursed. “The last thing I remember was an explosion of pain inside my head.”
The captain of the guard nodded. “Ye’ve got a fine, swelling bruise on the back of yer skull. Ye must have been struck from behind.”
James lifted his arm and ran his fingers over the growing lump behind his right ear. At the touch, he felt a ferocious, nearly blinding pain so strong that it turned his stomach. He bowed his head and fought the sickness, not wanting to disgrace himself further in front of these men.
They were still scrutinizing him, some openly, some covertly, but all with grave suspicion. James saw the looks that passed between them. They spoke among themselves, their voices deliberately low, so he could not hear the conversation. ’Twas a stark reminder that he was not a member of the clan, but rather an outsider.
No matter that he was a McKenna, the son of a powerful and respected chieftain. He had lost their trust when he failed to protect Davina.
God, he needed to see her. But he feared he could not leave this bed without aid and he was too proud to show further weakness in front of these warriors.
The discussion continued, with frequent glances in his direction. The chamber was soon brimming with tension, yet James found that he didn’t really care. He rubbed a hand over his brow, trying to ease the pounding in his forehead. His eyelids grew heavy and slowly closed. He struggled to reopen them, succeeding, but within seconds they closed a second time.
He had the sensation of someone drawing closer to his bed, speaking to him, but the words made no sense. There were waves of pain crashing through his head. But even worse, over and over the image of Davina falling prey to those brigands flashed before his eyes.
And then suddenly, mercifully, there was only darkness. And silence.

Synopsis

Reign by M.N. Forgy coverAs the president of the Sin City Outlaw Motorcycle Club, l I fuck as hard as I ride and rarely go to bed alone.

The women are fast and the violence is intense.

I excel in both.

People either respect me or fear me. I’m not arrogant. It’s just the truth.

I was a king, reigning over Vegas without complication, until one gorgeous sheriff made everything fall apart.

When I saw her, I became a Neanderthal, wanting nothing more than to be between those legs.

I guess that’s where I went wrong, because my reality was shot to hell real fucking fast.

One kiss caused her to step over that blue line.

One night in her bed made me a traitor.

And now… we’re both screwed.

Excerpt“Fuck you, Zeek! I am an officer of the law, and you!” I point at him, words starting to slur. “You’re a criminal, one everyone around here seems to pussyfoot around—”

“Everyone except you,” he interrupts. “Why aren’t you afraid of me?” he whispers, his head leaning back, eyes gleaming down at me. His question is laced with so many emotions, and I’m not sure how to answer.

Truth is, I am afraid of Zeek. I’m afraid of him for so many reasons.

“Who says I’m not? You’re a bad guy, Zeek,” I mutter. Citizens and law enforcement are conditioned to fear him, what he represents.

He steps forward, his hands slipping into his jeans pockets.

“I could be a good guy,” he whispers, looking at me as if he’s trying to tell me something.
