FIRE BOUND: A Sea Haven Novel by Christine Feehan

Publication Date: April 26, 2016

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Synopsis

imageThe #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Sea Haven novels returns to the circle of the six sisters of the heart, bound by the elements—and to one who possesses the power to inflame the most dangerous passions of all.

Flame-haired glass blower Lissa Piner has been commissioned to design chandeliers for a string of luxury hotels in Italy. But Lissa’s real mission is a secret. For her entire life has been a lie, and now is the time to right a terrible wrong.

Enlisted as her bodyguard is Casmir Prakenskii, a trained assassin, living off the grid. In Lissa, he sees a kindred spirit—something unexpected and wicked, mysterious and sensual. But more than mere passion has brought them together: two pasts that cry out for revenge. And before the night is over, as an ominous storm brews, someone is going to get burned.

Donna review 4.5 stars

Another hot installment in the Seahaven series. For some reason I like Casimir the best. He’s domineering but still has a deep appreciation for Lissa’s strength and abilities. They meshed well together and the danger and intrigue was perfect for them both. The story kept me on the edge of my seat and the hot hot romance made me melt. The romantic suspense was so riveting that I forgot it was a paranormal romance, and I liked that. Overall it I enjoyed it very much and cannot wait for the next brother to have his turn.

Ride Hard (Raven Riders Series) by Laura Kaye

Publication Date: April 26, 2016

Synopsis

imageBrotherhood. Club. Family.

They live and ride by their own rules.

These are the Raven Riders…

Raven Riders Motorcycle Club President Dare Kenyon rides hard and values loyalty above all else. He’ll do anything to protect the brotherhood of bikers—the only family he’s got—as well as those who can’t defend themselves. So when mistrustful Haven Randall lands on the club’s doorstep scared that she’s being hunted, Dare takes her in, swears to keep her safe, and pushes to learn the secrets overshadowing her pretty smile.

Haven fled from years of abuse at the hands of her criminal father and is suspicious of any man’s promises, including those of the darkly sexy and overwhelmingly intense Ravens’ leader. But as the powerful attraction between them flares to life, Dare pushes her boundaries and tempts her to want things she never thought she could.

The past never dies without a fight, but Dare Kenyon’s never backed down before…

I fell in love with this Hard Ink Series spin-off by the first chapter. Ms. Kay has a way of spinning relationships, not just with the lead couple but with everyone around them. The fact that she made this MC a little different than others was a pleasant surprise that I hope continues for many more books because I love them all. The outside danger built up slower than I was used to but I didn’t mind one bit because it allowed the sweet and spicy romance to grow between Dare and Haven. My only problem is now I have to wait until fall for the next installment.

I’m thrilled to be celebrating the release of my 25th novel, Ride Hard, the first book in my Raven Riders Motorcycle Club series about a new kind of MC with a protective mission. You might’ve first met the Ravens in the Hard Ink world, but this series stands on its own and is even sexier, edgier, and grittier! I can’t wait for you to get to know Dare, Haven, and everyone in the Raven world! And see down below for a giveaway and a bonus story offer! I hope you enjoy this excerpt from the book!

Excerpt

His left hand dragged down her body, over the small mounds of her breasts and the flat plane of her stomach. His fingers settled on the button to her jeans. “Because you realize now I have to exact my revenge.” He paused there, giving her the chance to tell him to back off.

She shivered beneath him. “I guess fair’s only fair,” she whispered.

That’s my girl, he thought, even though the sentiment was really problematic. On all kinds of levels. “You want me to stop, Haven, you just say the word.”

“Don’t stop,” she said, her lips parting, her breathing coming faster.

On a groan, Dare claimed her mouth with his. He tugged the button to her jeans free, yanked down the zipper, and pushed his hand beneath the snug material to find her hot and so damn slick.

Her tongue stroked against his, and he swallowed her moans as his fingers stroked her folds. She rocked her hips and parted her legs without him having to ask, pulling a growl of approval from low in his throat—and making him know that fingering her wasn’t going to be enough.

Not for him.

Not this time. And not that it had really been last time, either.

Dare wanted more of Haven. He wanted to taste her, drink her down, wear her on his skin. On his mouth.

Kissing her long and hard and deep, he gently withdrew his hand from between her legs and pushed at the denim around her waist. Haven clued in to what he was doing and helped him push down the material until she was bared to her knees.

And then Dare shoved down her body, gripped her hips in his hands, and planted his face against the triangle of blond hair at the junction of her thighs.

I loved The Player! The youngest Sevastyan brother just beat out his older brothers. He’s my new favorite and I didn’t think that was possible because I adored Maks in The Master last year. Each book in this series has made my list of favorites. They each feature a sexy Sevastyan brother and a feisty female heroine that leads them on a merry chase and wins their hearts. It was so much fun to read Dmitri and Vice’s book. Dmitri is a sexy billionaire software genius and Vice is a con artist from a whole family of con artists. Together they’re explosive! The heat scorched up the pages and the banter between the characters made me smile. I just loved everything about this book and I hope there will be a spin off series featuring some of the secondary characters. Go grab a copy of The Player and devour it now!

Calix Bourbon might seem like a free spirit, but that’s all a front. In reality he’s just trying to keep his fractured family together while working as a session musician. When Blue Fire hires him to replace their keyboardist, Calix is determined to make the most of the opportunity—but he can’t help being distracted by the band’s sexy personal chef.

Mimi’s temporary gig is great, but she has her heart set on auditioning for a televised cooking show. There’s just one problem: she only has a week to acquire the skills necessary to survive the competition. Luckily, the band’s new keyboard player can teach her exactly what she needs, in the kitchen and in the bedroom…

I’m obsessed with this series! Obsessed! The series features beautiful love stories with hot rock stars. Each book just keeps getting better. Take Me Home Tonight is one of my favorite books so far this year. It’s just incredible! Erika Kelly has a way of delivering a story that draws me into the story and I feel the emotions of the characters. They become vivid and real.  I fell in love with Calix and cheered on Mimi. Their love story was beautiful, emotional and burned up the pages. Each book in this series can be read as a standalone but I recommend starting at the beginning because each book features a different band member. I highly recommend the entire series. It’s one of my favorite series and Erika Kelly is on my must read author list.

Excerpt

Calix wasn’t sure why he was boarding the elevator in her steel and glass high rise, but he’d come this far. He might as well get her to her apartment.

The moment the doors closed, she leaned against the wall, and a slow bloom of satisfaction spread across her pretty features. “I did it,” she said quietly. “I freaking did it.”

Somehow standing so close to her in this dimly lit box made him forget all his reasons to stay away from her. He wanted her. Plain and simple. There was something irresistible about this girl. He caught her hand in his, brought it to his mouth, and kissed her open palm. “You did. You were fantastic.”

“You helped me.”

“Don’t think they’ll be using offal.”

“Not that.” She touched his arm, like she needed him to understand. “I meant by being there. In the audience. Every time I started to freak out I looked at you, and your bad-ass energy picked me up. Every single time. I needed that.” She held his gaze. “You made me feel like I could do it.”

“You could. You did.”

She didn’t look tired anymore. Her features softened, her lips parted. A crazy energy spun through him, throwing out images—those sultry eyes looking up at him, her mouth wrapped around his cock. He could picture it so vividly, his fingers touching her lips as she sucked him deep, and an explosion of erotic sensation detonated in his chest.

The car landed, and the doors opened. Mimi took one step forward and winced.

He stopped her. “You okay?”

“Just a blister.”

She’d had enough. So had he.

He scooped her off her feet and stepped off the elevator. Lowering his nose into her sweetly scented hair, he breathed her in. Need rocked through him, and he held her more tightly to his chest.

“Calix.” But she didn’t pack any fight in her tone.

He carried her down the hallway. “Which one?”

Instead of answering, she tucked her face into his neck and clasped her arms around him. “Thank you.” Her breath was warm on his skin, and her fingers curled in his hair.

Something hot and alive moved through him. “Gonna run out of carpet in a minute.”

“Is it terrible to say I don’t care? I think I want to stay like this forever. You feel so good, and I’m so tired.”

“Come on, sweet pants.”

“Fine.” Big, dramatic sigh. “622. See that crystal chandelier?” She didn’t even lift her head. “My door’s closest to it.”

“Key.”

She started to pull away from him, but the loss of her touch made him tighten his grip. When he didn’t let go, she lifted her head to look at him.

They’d never been this close. Close enough to see the pale nick of a scar right at her cheek bone, that expressive mouth, and the question in her eyes. Need burned through him, sending electrical impulses down his spine and through his dick. He needed her bare, warm skin against his. Needed the wet heat of her mouth, the slick tangle of her tongue. He needed…oh, fuck him.

His mouth settled over hers, and sparks fired in his blood. Her body turned toward him, fingers gripping the back of his shirt. The hunger took over, and he swept his tongue across her lips, licking inside her mouth.

With a sharp intake of breath, she was kissing him back. And, holy hell, this wasn’t some gentle exploration. This was mouth-fucking.

She clutched the back of his neck, her tongue stroking his, and raw desire streaked though him, setting him on fire.

Keeping his arm firmly around her waist, he set her down. But if she thought he was letting her go—not a chance. He just repositioned her so he could lift her against the wall and spread those legs around his hips. Nothing could stop his body from pressing into her and taking that mouth he’d fantasized about for months.

Her tits, her hands, the way she writhed against him, made him frenzied. “Jesus, Mimi.” And then she was making noises, hot, hungry purrs deep in her throat. He ground his cock against her. Heat blistered through him.

“God.” The back of her head hit the wall, and she fought to pull her legs out of his grip.

It took him a moment to shift gears, but he slowly lowered her to the floor. She looked as shaken as he felt. His knees barely supported him, so he braced both arms against the wall to hold himself up.

He needed a moment to cool down.

Jesus, he’d never had a kiss like that.

Hold Your Breath (Search and Rescue Series) by Katie Ruggle

Publication Date: April 5, 2016

Genre: Contemporary Romance/ Romantic Suspense

Synopsis
imageIn the remote Rocky Mountains, lives depend on the Search & Rescue brotherhood. But in a place this far off the map, trust is hard to come by and secrets can be murder…

As the captain of Field County’s ice rescue dive team, Callum Cook is driven to perfection. But when he meets new diver Louise “Lou” Sparks, all that hard-won order is obliterated in an instant. Lou is a hurricane. A walking disaster. And with her, he’s never felt more alive…even if keeping her safe may just kill him.

Lou’s new to the Rockies, intent on escaping her controlling ex, and she’s determined to make it on her own terms…no matter how tempting Callum may be. But when a routine training exercise unearths a body, Lou and Callum find themsePlves thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a killer who will stop at nothing to silence Lou—and prove that not even her new Search and Rescue family can keep her safe forever.

~*~*~*~

Donna 5 Stars

This book was a witty, fast-paced story that kept me on the edge of my seat. I related to Lou right away; her strength, her humor and her struggle to be independent was entertaining. I completely related to her choice in falling for Callum as well. I knew there was more to the hot boss-man and boy was I right. I just wish their consummation of all that sexual tension happened earlier but that did not take away from my love of the book. The Search and Rescue Team seems like a fun diverse group of people who have an easy rapport that I can’t get enough of. Their funny camaraderie just made them all real and showed how they deal with the danger above and below the ice. I read way past my bedtime because I could not put it down until I knew what happened with the danger and the romance. I highly recommend this novel and I cannot wait for the next installment.

First of all I loved this book and the prequel novella, On His Watch. The witty dialogue was so much fun mixed in with the danger and romance.

Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Except for the few times I was reduced to banging my head against the desk when my characters refused to cooperate, it was a blast to write, too.

1. You have a well-rounded background so I would like to ask; did those experiences urge you to become a novelist or did the desire to write spur your exciting life choices?

My life and writing mostly ran in tandem. I chose the eclectic range of jobs and classes and hobbies because I thought, “That sounds fun.” Once I started the Search and Rescue series, though, my experiences began sneaking into the books. In Hold Your Breath, Lou’s first time in a dry suit was uncomfortably close to mine (minus the hot men—oh, and the dead body). My editor had to keep steering me away from too-graphic forensic descriptions. What is “interesting” and “kind of awesome” to me is “gross” to her and most of the rest of the world.

As most people who know me can attest, I can discuss alternative energy systems for hours, long after the listener’s eyes have glazed over with boredom. Therefore, I tried to restrain myself when writing about Lou’s rudimentary system, although a few of my own challenges crept in. Sometimes, like Lou, I just wanted toast, but when my wind turbine and propane generator were both down, leaving only the PV (solar) panels, there was no toast for me—at least not during non-daylight hours. There was no TV, either, which meant I got a lot of writing done.

2. I love the camaraderie of the Rescue Team most of all but what do you love the most about your characters?

Yay! I really wanted to capture the closeness of a team of first responders, so I’m glad it clicked for you. I think my favorite aspect of the Search and Rescue series is the characters’ courage. Whether it’s jumping into ice-cold water, running into a burning building or just deciding to make a positive life change and following through, they face fear head-on and push past it. I’m amazed and impressed by how real-life first responders go to work every day, knowing that they could encounter life-threatening dangers. That steady, constant bravery truly impresses me.

3. What was the easiest and what was the hardest part of writing this book?

The easiest part, surprisingly enough, was writing the first drafts. The stories seemed to just flow out of me, and, after going out to sweep snow off the solar panels or feed the wood boiler, I’d be excited about returning to writing a scene. The hardest part…hm. It was probably the edits. Normally, I love doing edits, love rearranging the story until it’s as good as we (my editors and I) can get it. Since I’ve started working the overnight shift at a bakery, however, my editing and writing time has been compressed into that too-short period between making bread and writing words. With the rapid-fire release schedule of the Search and Rescue series (all the books are only two months apart), things have been…busy. Overall, though, the process has been amazing. Working with Sourcebooks has been a wonderful experience.

I fucking hate this place. I don’t know why I torture myself by coming back here. I should have burned it down a long time ago. I grab my bags from outside and when the cool night air hits me, it helps to release some of the pressure in my chest. When I walk back in, it returns.I lock the door, then pull two pillows and a blanket from the tote and throw them on the now fully inflated mattress. The house is cool, even without air-conditioning. The weather has been in the fifties at night, and the large trees that surround the house help to shade it from the sun. Tomorrow, I will probably have to plug in a window unit. The lack of insulation keeps the house about the same temperature as it is outside.
I’m undressed and just before climbing under the covers when I notice Saylor laying on the couch, sound asleep. How the fuck did I forget she was here? When my eyes land on her face, everything else disappears. My memories don’t matter. This house don’t matter. Black . . . He don’t fucking matter either. Only her. Saylor Samson.
Her shirt is raised, making the lower part of her stomach visible, including her belly button that I have an urge to kiss. So I do. I place my lips on her stomach, the heat of her flesh burning them. I turn to look down her crossed legs, all the way to the tip of her boots that are covered in dust. I don’t know what I want more—to stand here and just stare at her fully clothed, or get her naked and hold her in my arms.
The battle is quickly won and I start by taking off her boots, then remove her socks and kiss her pink-painted toes one by one. I pull her jeans down her legs, kissing every inch of skin bared to me. She hasn’t stirred, and I know she can’t enjoy this while she is sleeping, but that’s not why I’m doing it. I’m doing it because I like the way her skin feels on my lips. I want to cherish every part of her, and I know it’s not just because I care about her. It’s more, but I still can’t make out the word in my head.
I kiss her hands, up her arms, across her collarbone, up her throat, her chin, her cheeks, her eyes, her nose, and then her parted lips. I carry her to the mattress, folding her into my chest and inhale her hair that still smells like her. Not a smoky bar, not perfume or hairspray, just her. I’m almost asleep. I’m in the hell hole I grew up in, and there isn’t a bad thought around. My mind is peaceful, my arms are full, and my heart is filled with something. That nameless emotion that I’ve never felt.
“Dirk?”
“Yes.” My voice is a hoarse whisper, and I feel her shiver when I place my lips on her head. What seems like forever passes before she answers. When she does, her voice is the same whisper, but this time it’s filled with conviction.
“I think I’m falling in love with you.” And just like that, my nameless emotion finally has a name.

Well I wasn’t expecting the story I read, but dang it was powerful. I had to wait a while before writing a review because I had to figure out what I thought about the story. Did I enjoy it or not? I ultimately enjoyed it. Was this a good love story? It was one of the most powerful I’ve read. Sinner’s Creed doesn’t have the typical HEA ending I usually want and demand in a romance, but this story was all about love and sacrifice. I was an emotional mess reading this book and any book that can create that kind of emotion for the readers is incredible. Sinner’s Creed is a beautiful and tragic love story. I recommend it for readers looking for an emotional read and a unique storyline. I can’t wait for the next book.

Note: I’d be careful reading reviews before picking up this book. My review is spoiler free but I think a lot of reviews are going to contain spoilers because of the storyline and ending. Spoilers would definitely ruin the reading experience.

This was a tension filled action novel that I could not put down. A serial killer on the loose, attacks going on and romantic tension that kept me in knots. Amelia and Nathan made a good couple in that they just seemed to fit together even though they had issues to work through. The story was fast paced and really kept me guessing until the end and I love that in a mystery. I also enjoyed the hot love scenes between Amelia and Nathan and that they flowed with the story. The Deadly Ops guys are all hot of course and it’s fun wondering who will be next to find “the one”.

A Covert Affair
Copyright © 2016 Katie Reus

Still moving in time with the music, she looked at his chest instead of his face. It made it easier to breathe.
“Are you going to say anything to him?” Nathan finally murmured.
She figured she understood what he meant. Would she tell Iker that his name was Nathan? She didn’t even have to think about it. No matter what, she could never betray him. It didn’t matter how many years had passed. He was the boy—now man—she’d lost her virginity to. The first person she’d ever loved. Hell, the first person who’d ever loved her, because her mother certainly hadn’t. “No, but you will give me answers.”
“Not here,” he said simply. Since he hadn’t said no, she understood he meant to tell her later. Which just piqued her curiosity even more. “You look beautiful,” he continued, his grip possessive.
Slight irritation popped inside her at the way he held her. “Thank you. You look good too.”
His lips quirked up almost playfully. “Just good?”
Seeing him almost smile did something strange to her insides. She should be pushing him for more answers but found herself giving him a half smile. “Would handsome make your ego feel better? Or maybe . . . pretty?” She snickered at the dark look he gave her. When they were together he’d gotten grief from plenty of the boys in her neighborhood for being “a pretty boy.” Until he’d kicked the ass of more than one of them.
“Are you and Mercado serious?” Nathan’s gaze grew even darker, all traces of amusement fading.
She shouldn’t tell him a damn thing. He wasn’t even using his real name. Still, she couldn’t seem to stop the truth from coming out. “It’s our first date.”
Though it was marginal, his grip on her relaxed. “Good.” There was a wealth of meaning in that one word.
“When do you plan on answering my questions?” Because she had plenty.
“Meet up with me after the auction.” He wasn’t even bothering to ask her, just ordering.
It pissed her off. Despite her curiosity, she pursed her lips and met his gaze dead-on. “If I’d ever had a mother who cared about me, I’m sure she would have told me not to meet up with strangers. And you, Miguel, are a stranger.” A stranger who’d seen every inch of her naked.
His jaw tightened in annoyance. “I’ll answer your questions, I swear.”
There was no real way she was just walking away after missing him and wondering about him for twelve damn years. She couldn’t even pretend not to be rabidly curious. “Can you remember my phone number if I tell it to you?”
He nodded, so she quickly rattled off her number. It was slight, but she felt him relax a fraction. As the song ended she stepped away from him, surprised at the feeling of loss as his arms fell from her. She quickly turned, making her way back to her date.
Iker was talking to two men, but he frowned over her head, likely at Nathan, as she made her way to him. She pasted on a smile for Iker when he met her gaze, though, hoping it looked real.
Unfortunately all her thoughts were on the man she’d left on the dance floor and the answers she’d soon be getting from him.

PROLOGUE

I was mad at the world, at the whiskey for not being strong enough, at the drugs for not lasting long enough, at the fucking whores I banged for not getting me off when it was my fault my dick was fucking useless after a bucket of fucking blow. I went so far as to be pissed at random people on the street for laughing or smiling when I felt like I’d never be able to smile or laugh again.
How dare they?
How fucking dare they be move on with their lives like my friend hadn’t just died.
I was on the verge of losing what little sanity I had left when I rode out of Logan’s Beach and set off to find a place, or places, where I could numb myself against the feelings that followed me from town to town, cheap motel to cheap motel, girl to girl, high to fucking high.
Then, this pink haired girl from the past came barreling into my life and it was like for the first time, I’d found a purpose. A real genuine purpose and not just some shit Chop spewed out as orders that I and every other member of the Beach Bastards took as bible, but a true reason to live again.
To WANT to live again.
Someone to live for.
Ti was my chance at some sort of real happiness when Lord fucking knows I had no idea what that really was before her. The only glimpses of real genuine happiness I’d ever had came courtesy of Preppy, King, and of course Grace. Like when King tattooed us for the first time and we loved them, even though they were crooked and downright fucking awful. Like when Grace made me my very first birthday cake. Like the time King Prep and I sat at the top of the water tower and thought the world was ours to take.
Because at that time, it was.
Then there was Ti and my new happiness became the first time I saw her smile. The first time I kissed her. The first time I tasted her pussy by the fire. The first time she let me inside of her, shamelessly pushing through her virginity in a frantic need to make her mine.
Because that’s what she was.
That’s what she would always be.
And I will kill every motherfucker who dares to try and take her from me.
Mine.

I loved Bear’s story. Soulless is book 2 in T.M Frazier’s Lawless series and book 4 in The King series. I’d recommend reading from book 1 in the King series. Soulless is the conclusion of Bear and Thia’s story.  This series is not for everyone. It’s a dark, gritty and raw romance. I’d suggest reading the blurbs before buying because there are darker elements in the books. Bear and Thia’s story is emotional, raw and scorching hot. It’s also a beautiful love story. I recommend this series for readers looking for a dark erotica series with a villain/ hero and a HEA ending.

This is such a fun idea. Liliana Hart has invited five authors to have a go at some new characters in her MacKenzie Family Series. This is the novella by Kimberly Kincaid and I loved it. There was fast paced action from page one and some seriously hot romance too. It helped so much that I liked Kylie and could relate to her while Devon was the perfect sexy hero. A lot of fun packed into a quick read.

Cori 3.5 Stars review

Hidden Heat is a fun cop/ biker romance. Yep cop/ biker and I love both so it was a fun read. Thorn has the bad boy biker thing going on but he’s a undercover cop. The story focuses on Thorn and Cassidy. There isn’t a lot of focus on club brotherhood like most biker romances I pick up. The heat between Thron and Cassidy was scorching hot. Their story flowed quickly and I read it from start to finish one afternoon. I’d recommend this book for romance lovers who want a little bit of bad boy in their hero. Hidden Heat was a fun, sexy romance and I’m looking forward to picking up the next book in the series when it comes out.

Excerpt

Cassidy Ryder swung the bat, testing the weight and reach, as she marched around the line of motorcycles. Wrinkling her nose, she ignored the sharp, pungent smell of marijuana drifting across her path.
Huddled in the shade beneath the building’s eaves, men with greasy hair and beards puffed on tightly rolled joints and eyed her with mild curiosity. As long as she stayed away from their well-loved bikes, they’d let her move on without interference.
Her body trembled with suppressed fury. She almost wished they’d try to stop her. Anything to give her a reason to release the pressure building inside. With a snort of derision, she straightened her back and stalked into the Skull and Bones Bar.
The thumping beat of Kid Rock blasted from the speakers, competing with the rowdy conversations shaking the large, smoky room. Though mostly rural, Sand County had a law against smoking in any public establishment. In pure defiance, a blue-gray haze hovered around the dim bulbs spotlighting the long shelves of liquor and above two pool tables in the back.
She hesitated. Catching movement out of the corner of her eye, she ignored the tall, lanky bartender strolling along behind the counter and heading her way. The rest of the crowd ignored her entrance. Did they often see people carrying a bat into the place?
She didn’t care. Time for someone to listen to her.
With a swing of her whole body, she brought the bat down, sweeping several glasses from the long bar. The loud pops and tinkling of broken glasses immediately quieted the room just as Kid’s “American Bad Ass” faded out. Several of the leather-and-denim clad men stood and stepped toward her.
She lifted the bat for another swing.
“Damn it to hell! Wait!” The bartender slid over the top of the counter to stand in front of her. “What the hell are you doing?”
Speaking of badass, with his broad shoulders and tats down both arms, he’d draw anyone’s attention just by entering a room. But add in the dark hair cut tight on the sides, long on top and brushed back to his nape, he especially caught the eye of every woman in the place. She’d noticed too, but she had more important things on her mind.
Her arm muscles tensed as she pulled her weapon higher over her shoulder.
He stopped a bat length away and raised his hands. “Cassidy . . .” He hesitated as if he waited for her reaction to the name. Was she that forgettable? She’d been there several times over the last month, to drag her brother back home. When her eyes narrowed, he continued. “Whatever has you riled up, can we talk about it?”
Emphasizing each word, she pointed the bat as if it were a finger. “I came in here yesterday and asked, real polite, if you or anyone here had seen my brother. Each one of you looked me in the face and lied. This morning, I get a call, telling me he was seen yesterday, hanging out back, talking with Stonewall.” She glanced around, keeping the bartender in her peripheral view. “Where’s the bastard? I want answers about my brother’s whereabouts.” Proud of how her voice remained even and carried across the room, she jutted out her chin. What would they lie about next?
The Brothers of Mayhem Motorcycle Club never took kindly to threats. She didn’t care. Violence was the only way they would respect her, and she was prepared to do more, if that’s what it took to bring her little brother back home. Storm had never stayed gone this long.
“Put the bat down before you get hurt.” The bartender’s soft command sounded so reasonable.
Screw reasonable. She’d been fair and understanding for the last three days while she searched for Storm. Her patience had disappeared with the only member of her family worth a damn. No way would she fail him again.
“I will when you—”
Brawny arms wrapped around her chest and squeezed. She gasped for breath as someone hauled her against his chest and off her feet. The bartender grabbed the bat from her loosened grip and threw it to the side. It hit the floor with a loud clanking.
“Little girl, we don’t know where your brother’s at. We didn’t lie about that.” The deep voice of the club’s VP, Mac McGee, came from above her head as he squeezed again in warning. “Maybe I need to teach you some fucking manners.”
She squeaked from the pain, her ribs near the breaking point. With little blood circulation reaching below her waist, her kicks were no more than taps to the mountain restraining her. She pushed at the tight arms as her head dug into his sternum.
“Please,” she pleaded with a hiss of precious air.
“Mac, let her go. I’ll handle her.” The bartender rested his elbows on the countertop behind him, crossed his long legs at the ankles, and waited.
The big guy released her so quickly she barely caught herself before falling at their feet. Asshole. Taking cautious breaths in case of a cracked rib, she regained a little of her composure.
Handle her? In his dreams. Shoulders thrust back and head held up, she asked, “Where’s my brother?”
The bartender sighed in frustration. “You’re the most hardheaded woman. Mac told you yesterday, and today is no different. We have no idea where your brother is.”
Then it struck her what the big guy said a moment earlier. She turned and looked into the angry bloodshot eyes of Mac. “What did you mean when you said ‘We didn’t lie about that’? What did you lie about?”
With a shake of his massive, shaggy head, the big guy reached for her, but the bartender knocked her to the side and stepped between them, one arm out to keep her back. “Go on. I’ll take it from here.”
“Never could stand bossy old ladies,” Mac drawled with a sneer.
She leaned over the bartender’s arm and shouted, “Who are you calling old lady? I’m no one’s old lady! You old fart!” She knew what he meant, that it had nothing to do with age, but with belonging to someone. At the age of twenty-one, she refused to let anyone call her that. At sixty-one, she would damn well still refuse.
“Who would want you as their old lady, with that bitchy attitude,” Mac said, more as fact than a question. “You need your ass beaten.” Then he walked away as he raised one finger in her direction.
“Yeah, but at least I look human and not like a grizzly bear, what with all that fur on your face!” How lame.
She really needed to shut up before they got tired of her mouth. As a kid she’d grown up around surly men like Mac, but her father’s reputation had protected her from worse. Besides, what about her promise to be a good girl? Her foster mother tried her best to teach her self-control. Yet Cassidy often let her temper get the better of her. Remembering how her hissy fit had caused her brother to leave home in a huff the other night, a sharp pain roiled in her stomach.
As she opened her mouth to apologize, the bartender’s hand cupped the back of her head, clutched a handful of hair, and twisted. At the same time, his other hand covered her mouth.
“Shh,” he said softly. Concern darkened his blue eyes as he shook his head.
Bending her back, he caused her to lose balance but held her tight. Her feet remained on the floor as he aligned his body with hers, almost touching his nose to hers.
“If you don’t shut your trap, you’re going to get more than you asked for,” he whispered. “Your brother isn’t here. He’s turning eighteen in a couple days, right?” Without giving her a chance to answer, he added, “Then he’ll be an adult. At least one who can vote and die for his country. So, I think it’s in your best interest to go home. When he’s ready to talk, he’ll show up.”
She wasn’t sure why it happened. The last few days had been stressful. She wasn’t one of those girls who did it at the drop of a hat, but her eyes welled with tears.
“Ah, shit. Don’t do that,” he said between gritted teeth. He moved his hand from her mouth, pressing her cheek to a broad shoulder as he lifted her upright.
Unable to stop, she dug trembling fingers into his leather vest and sobbed.
Why is he being so nice?
The strong hand in her hair remained, but the other one rubbed and patted her back. He acted as if he had all of the time in the world while she bawled like a little kid.
“Shh. Everything will be okay.”
She glanced up and her heart skipped a beat. The guy had a gorgeous smile; there was even a dimple beneath the stubble on his face.
A gravelly voice nearby said, “Get me a beer, Thorn, before you fuck her.”
Her body stiffened.
Stonewall had arrived.
