Spotlight & Review – Gifts of Honor: Starting from Scratch\ Hero’s Homecoming by Stacy Gail and Rebecca Crowley

Unsung Military Heroes

First off, I’d like to thank Cori and Donna for allowing me to bounce onto their blog to let me chat about my latest release, STARTING FROM SCRATCH! This novella is one half of Carina Press’s holiday duology, GIFTS OF HONOR (and in case you’re interested, the fabulous Rebecca Crowley’s HERO’S HOMECOMING makes up the other half—yay! ^_^ ).

* * *

When a publisher calls for manuscript submissions, I’m usually all over it the same way girls are all over a cologne-wearing dude in those lame AXE commercials. So when an open-call at Carina Press came out for a holiday romance collection, I was thrilled!… at first. Military homecoming holiday romance was how this particular submission call was described. At first all I could think was, “Crap, I don’t know anything about being in the military.” I was so convinced this sub call wasn’t right for me that I put it out of my mind. Or at least I tried to. The thing is, I might not know what it’s like to survive on the battlefield as a soldier, but I have plenty of friends who know the strength it takes to hold down the fort here at home. So instead of focusing on battles and guns, I chose to write what I know, and that’s about the courage of the loved ones who are left behind. Courage like the kind my friend Celyne has, when her Marine husband suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the line of duty. Courage like my sister Cindy displayed, smiling every day despite the fact that she hadn’t heard from her Air Force son for eight long weeks due to an information blackout. Courage like my friend Stacy “Jr.” showed, falling asleep every night with the phone in her hand while her new husband was in the Middle East.

If you have someone you care about who’s in the military, I decided to write this for you, because your strength is nothing short of inspirational.

I was genuinely shocked when STARTING FROM SCRATCH was accepted, because let’s face it—I’m a rebel, and I didn’t exactly give them what they’d called for (even went waaaaay over on the damn word count *sigh*). But my editor got it. She understood that there are all kinds of heroes, both on the battlefield, and here at home. Sadly, the loved ones of a soldier never get ticker-tape parades or shiny medals to celebrate their bravery, but at least they’re getting this book.

STARTING FROM SCRATCH is my thanks to all of you who serve right along with your loved ones in the military. I might not know who you are, and we’ll probably never meet. But I’m aware you’re there behind the scenes, holding the world together with the strength of your will alone. So please believe me when I say thank you. You’re amazing, you beautiful and brave unsung heroine.

BLURB:
Christmas is the perfect time to start from scratch

Lieutenant Sully Jax saved his unit during an IED attack, but he couldn’t save his marriage. He can’t even remember it. Recovered from his injuries, he’s come home to the family and friends he knows—and an ex-wife who’s a stranger to him.

Lucy Crabtree was heartbroken last Christmas when Sully announced his plan to go on one last tour of duty, and devastated when he asked for a divorce after he awoke in the hospital with no memory of her. She’s finally moving on from her hurt and from losing the man she loved more than anything, and her cookie-baking business is taking off just in time for the holidays. But now Sully’s back, and she can’t deny she still loves him. But how can she trust her heart to someone who breaks it every time she sees him?

Sully might not remember Lucy, but something inside won’t let her go. With every bite of her cookies, he finds a new love for Lucy, and he soon realizes he wants to rebuild his life… with her by his side.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

I’ll be home for Christmas…

A batch of special Christmas cookies helps a wounded ex-Ranger remember the love of his life. A surprise phone call reunites a woman with the soldier who once broke her heart. There’s no place like home for the holidays, and there’s no better way to spend them than with the one you love.

Edited by Angela James, this anthology includes:
Starting from Scratch by Stacy Gail
Hero’s Homecoming by Rebecca Crowley

REVIEW:

Starting from Scratch by Stacy Gail
This is a story of Sully, a wounded soldier returning home with partial amnesia and Lucy, the woman who loves him. This heartfelt romance was touching and at times tense as they work their way through their love and constant longing. I thought the author did a good job making it realistic and compelling with just the right amount of heat.

Hero’s Homecoming by Rebecca Crowley
This is a story of Chris, a wounded soldier’s returning home and with out knowing what his future will bring. He is unexpectedly in need of help from Beth, the woman whose heart he broke months ago. This story was at times gut-wrenching, but also quite touching. The anxiety and apprehension was realistic in showing how they both overcame the obstacles and gave in to their undeniable passion.

Both stories were thought provoking and provided a glimpse into what many in the military go through on a daily basis.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

In charming Verily, New York, Kate Seymour has a smashing success with Kinnections, the matchmaking service she owns with her two best girlfriends. But Kate’s more than a savvy businesswoman: She’s gifted with a secret power, a jolting touch that signals when love’s magic is at work. It rocked her when she picked up a strange volume of love spells in the town’s used bookstore . . . and it zapped her again when she encountered Slade Montgomery, the hot-tempered— and hot-bodied—divorce lawyer who storms into Kinnections demanding proof that playing Cupid won’t destroy his vulnerable sister, Kate’s newest client. The only way to convince this cynic that she’s no fraud, and that love is no mirage, is for Kate to meet his audacious challenge: find him his dream woman. Can Kate keep their relationship strictly business when her electrifying attraction nearly knocked her off her feet? Or has the matchmaker finally met her match?

REVIEW:

What a refreshing traditional contemporary romance. Kate owns Kinnections, a matchmaking service and she believes everyone has a true love. Slade believes true love does not exist, but is forced to become Kinnections newest client. Searching for Someday is a fun, sexy story that follows Kate and Slade on a journey to prove who is right. The story started a little slow for me and I was not sure where this book was headed. Very quickly I felt like I knew each character and couldn’t put this book down. I needed to know the outcome. Some scenes in the book made me laugh and I love it when a book can do that. I suspect this book will be part of a series and look forward to reading more from this author.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Acclaimed author Kresley Cole introduces a sizzling new series with this tale of a fierce werewolf and a bewitching vampire — unlikely soul mates whose passion will test the boundaries of life and death.

A mythic warrior who’ll stop at nothing to possess her . . .

After enduring years of torture from the vampire horde, Lachlain MacRieve, leader of the Lykae Clan, is enraged to find the predestined mate he’s waited millennia for is a vampire. Or partly one. This Emmaline is a small, ethereal half Valkyrie/half vampire, who somehow begins to soothe the fury burning within him.

A vampire captured by her wildest fantasy . . .

Sheltered Emmaline Troy finally sets out to uncover the truth about her deceased parents — until a powerful Lykae claims her as his mate and forces her back to his ancestral Scottish castle. There, her fear of the Lykae — and their notorious dark desires — ebbs as he begins a slow, wicked seduction to sate her own dark cravings.

An all-consuming desire . . .

Yet when an ancient evil from her past resurfaces, will their desire deepen into a love that can bring a proud warrior to his knees and turn a gentle beauty into the fighter she was born to be?

REVIEW:

A friend of mine has been bugging me to read this series for quite some time so I finally gave in and read book one. It took me a little bit to get into the new world of Valkyries, vampires and Lykae, but once I was there, I got hooked and I can’t wait to read about the other characters mentioned. The Valkyries are a hoot, being both ruthless and a bit clueless. The way they banter with each other was nothing short of fun. The romance part was nice in that Emmaline, a Valkyrie/vampire, learned to be strong and Lachlain, King of the Lykae, learned to be gentle as they worked through their differences and prejudices. His seduction was fun to read, but I did wish it moved a little faster. When they finally did get together, the sparks flew and made it well worth the wait. I also appreciated that no one breed is really bad. Like in life, there are good guys, bad guys and best of all, those that you just aren’t sure about. It’s those characters that now have me purchasing the rest of the series.

AN ALL-NEW PLAY-BY-PLAY NOVELLA

All Elizabeth and Gavin Riley want for Christmas is a baby. Despite over a year of trying, conception hasn’t been successful. But for a high-achiever like Elizabeth, she must succeed at everything. That means making the very most of every opportunity with her husband. And when it comes to nonstop sex Gavin’s not really complaining. Exhausted, maybe…

Unfortunately, this holiday season they’re not exactly given a lot of private time. Elizabeth is hosting the holiday, Gavin’s sister is getting married, and the house is wall-to-wall with family. For Elizabeth and Gavin the nights may be chilly, but the urge is still hot. And they’re not about to let any distraction get in the way of their necessary pleasures during a holiday game that yields so many unexpected surprises.

Includes a preview of Jaci Burton’s upcoming novels Melting the Ice and Hope Flames.

Liz and Gavin want to have a baby. In this short book they make every effort to make it happen. With a cute story woven between a lot of hot sex it was a hot and quick read. Jaci Burton knows how to write great sex scenes and she didn’t disappoint in this book. I look forward to more books in this series.

Play by Play Series by Jaci Burton

» The Play by Play series is a steamy, sexy peek into the world of sports as seen through the Riley family. Mick Riley is a professional football player, his brother Gavin plays baseball. Their sister Jenna runs the family sports bar and doesn’t want anything to do with any guy involved with sports. Their parents are heavily involved in their lives and it’s a loving, tight knit family.

And I’m expanding the Play by Play series to include more characters beyond the Riley family. Hot, sexy, talented men who bonded together at college and remained friends beyond. I hope you’re going to love these men as much as you’ve loved and embraced my Riley family.

» I love sports. I have mad love for football, both pro as well as college. Come Fall you’ll find me planted in front of the television on the weekends to watch the Oklahoma Sooners play on Saturday and the St. Louis Rams play on Sunday. I grew up in St. Louis so Cardinals baseball has always been a big part of my life (Cardinals football was, too, before they moved to Arizona). I still remember as a kid watching one sport on television while my dad would listen to the other sport on the radio. I’m a big fan of NASCAR racing, and world cup soccer. My older son played soccer from the time he was five years old all the way through varsity soccer in high school. While I can’t catch a ball, kick a ball or throw a ball worth a damn, I love to watch it all.

» So having the chance to write a sports series has been a dream come true for me. And what better way to showcase my love for all things sports than to write this series. Hot, sexy, determined to have it all—their successes and their failures pave the way to the biggest win of their lives—that elusive happily ever after.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Her sweetest mistake . . .

Cool as a Chicago winter, private events planner Cara DeLuca is a model of self-control . . . until she meets the one temptation she can’t resist: Shane Doyle. The sexy, Irish pastry chef is too hot, too sure, too young, and after a crazy night in Vegas – her new husband. While at first Cara wants nothing more than a way out of her sham marriage to Shane, she soon finds that beneath his farm boy demeanor lies a man who can match her drive, both in and out of the bedroom. How can the wrong guy feel so deliciously right?

. . . Tastes so, so good

Shane has carefully structured his career and life around one goal: connecting with the family that doesn’t know he exists. Marrying a woman with more issues than a magazine stand wasn’t part of the plan, but melting Cara’s icy exterior is so worth the detour. Now as the annulment date nears and long-buried secrets are revealed, Shane will have to fight for the one thing guaranteeing the perfect life he craves . . . the current Mrs. Shane Doyle.

REVIEW:

I had never read any of Kate Meaders books, but it looked interesting so I thought i’d give it a try. All Fired Up is a fantastic story. I loved learning about each of the characters. Shane and Lili started out married in Vegas within hours of meeting. The morning after when they realized what they had done, set the pace for the rest of the book. Watching them getting to know each other while waiting for the annulment process to be complete was emotional. Lili is independent and wanted everyone to think she was strong. Shane wanted to be part of a family. Together they burned up the pages. This is a great read and I will definitely read more of her books.

But when the local matchmakers conspire to send them to a secluded lakeside cabin, the two friends soon discover that a little love will keep them warm.

TV producer Nathaniel Ravelle knows the Bayberry Island mermaid legend is a joke— how could a statue grant a wish for true love? But when a Christmas Nor’easter lands him in close quarters with local Annie Parker, they see magic at work in matters of the heart in New York Times bestselling author Susan Donovan’s “A Seaside Christmas.”

But in her spare moments, she’s perfecting a special recipe to charm the handsome new neighbor—who has his own surprise gift for her come Christmas Eve!

REVIEWS:

Christmas in Shelter Bay by JoAnn Ross
A sweet little love story full of family and friends. It was so realistically written that I felt I already knew everyone in town, and like them, was happy with the warm romance just waiting to happen.

A Seaside Christmas by Susan Donovan
The first few pages had me chuckling and the smile stayed in place for the rest of the story. The author has a witty way of telling a story that could easily have gone “campy”. It was funny, sexy and very heartwarming. I am still smiling over the back story.

Mistletoe on Main Street by LuAnn McLane
This was a cute story of second chances. The romance was light and would appeal to those who like a tamer love story. It was a nice “happily ever after” and the author had a nice easy style that was fun to read.

The Christmas Gift by Alexis Morgan
I enjoyed this short story where Bridey helps Seth overcome his insecurities without even trying. That made this a warm lovely story with just the right touch of drama to spice things up.

Overall, these stories were heartwarming and fun to read. The small town closeness was well portrayed so that I felt a part of it all.

Mayor Jackson Davies is trying to convince a cookie giant to move its headquarters to his crumbling community, and Monica’s presence is just too . . . unwholesome for business. But the desire in his eyes sends a very different message: Stay, at least for a while.

REVIEW:

Jackson is the Mayor in a small town and Monica is the original wild child. Sparks fly when the two meet. There were so many emotions I felt reading this book. O’Keefe did a great job telling each character’s story without it becoming overwhelming. Watching Jackson and Monica getting to know each other and dying to see how they would overcome their obstacles had me on the edge of my seat. I didn’t want to put the book down.

Gabrielle Steven’s sister is missing. Her hunt for clues brings her face to face with the one vampire she can’t forget. Their missions combine and thrust them into the heart of evil. Will their passion be enough to overcome the pain from their past, or will their dark desires destroy them both?

REVIEW:

This is the second book in Jessica Lee’s Enclave Series. These books can be read individually, but I recommend reading them in order to fully enjoy the story. This series is a sexy paranormal romance where vampires protect humanity against evil vampires that prey on humans. Arran and Gabrielle were in the first book as secondary characters and I was excited to read their story. Undying Embrace is full of danger, action and smoking hot passion. Arran and Gabrielle’s chemistry heated up the pages. This is a really hot vampire series and I can’t wait for the next book. BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Overachiever Mary-Kate Grant (who is indeed named after an Olsen Twin) has followed every rule to the letter to pursue her dream of working in TV programming. Ripping a page from the “hard work pays off” playbook, she takes an assistant level job at a Chicago sports network to break into the industry.

MK has no time or desire for a relationship right now—she is totally focused on her career and being independent, unlike the other women in her family.

But MK’s plans are run through the shredder when she finds herself working for William Cumberland, a British media mogul who made his fortune with Connectivity, a social media site. William blows into Chicago just like the winds off Lake Michigan and purchases the group of networks MK works for—and makes her his personal assistant in the process.

Suddenly MK finds her career plans in jeopardy. William makes her question everything she has ever thought and has the uncanny ability to see right through her. And for the first time in her life, MK finds herself not only questioning what she wants for her career but for her personal life as well…

REVIEW:

Connectivity is a beautiful love story that drew me in from the first page. I fell in love with the characters Aven Ellis created. MK (Mary-Kate) is a smart, sassy, funny and somewhat quirky woman who is not looking for love and completely focused on her career until she meets her new boss. William is a sexy, British mogul and is intrigued by MK from the start. I loved their banter with each other. I think William needed someone like MK to bring some fun into his life. There story is a really sweet romance that takes the reader along for the ride as they fall in love. I highly recommend this book for romance readers looking for a sweet and romantic love story.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Aven Ellis

I have always loved to write. I completed my first novel at the age of 15—an angst driven high school romance (Boy meets girl! Evil girl likes same boy! A deception! Will true love prevail?) Though I truly wanted to be a fiction writer, I also knew it was more practical to pursue a job in the communications field and write fiction on the side. So I went off to Purdue University and earned a degree in communication, writing for The Exponent along the way (apologies to anyone who fought through reading those early attempts at journalism.)

After a stint writing for a community newspaper and a public relations agency, and not enjoying what I was writing at all, I found myself a non-writing job and continued writing at night and on weekends. I completed multiple manuscripts that found a home under my bed. Complete it, print it, stick it in an envelope, slide under bed. It became a routine for me, similar to “Lather.Rinse.Repeat.”

Finally, years later, I wrote Connectivity. I loved this story; I loved writing for William and MK. I became brave enough to share this story with new friends who became equally as passionate about these characters and their journey. They encouraged me to submit it to a publishing house. Then, in a critique group session, wine was poured and one of my partners, Lauren Linwood, pointed her finger at me and demanded that I submit Connectivity to a publisher, telling me the words every writer dreams of hearing—this will sell. I ended up submitting Connectivity to Soul Mate Publishing and now can happily say I am a published author.

I live in the Dallas area with my family. I enjoy clipping out recipes I will never get around to trying, working out, and chatting with friends on social media. I am particularly fond of British actors named Benedict and Henry. I love shopping and fashion and admit to being obsessed with whatever the Duchess of Cambridge is wearing. I am also obsessed with any show or cookbook featuring Gordon Ramsay.

And I do not believe in the Lather. Rinse. Repeat theory when it comes to shampooing my hair.
