Ari rolled onto her side for the millionth time that night. She wondered if Lance was having any more luck sleeping on the couch. She didn’t think so if the noises emanating from his side of the room were any indication.

Oh God, his thigh. She should have thought more about his injury. How in the world would a six foot two man sleep on her small sofa, especially with a bum leg, He probably needed to stretch it out.

This was ridiculous; she was not getting any sleep tonight. If Lance weren’t here, she’d give up, flip on the lights and head to the potter’s wheel. A one second brain flash of her as Demi Moore and Lance as Patrick Swayze entered into her mind but she shook it off as the one AM crazies.

“Lance,” she whispered. “Lance.”

“Hmmm?” A male grumble rose from the couch.

“Are you awake?”

“Sorta.”

“Switch places with me.”

“What? Why?” He sat up.

“I can’t sleep knowing I put an injured man on the couch. An injured tall man.” She struggled to see his face in the dark, but could only make out shadows of his form.

“I’m fine. Go back to sleep.”

“No.” She hopped off the bed taking her pillow with her.

“Arianna, I won’t be able to sleep knowing I kicked a beautiful woman out of bed in her own apartment.”

He’d called her beautiful. She shouldn’t let his words shouldn’t warm her insides, but still, his compliment brought a smile to her lips. “Oh, I know. We can share the bed.” She turned back and crawled under the covers, her stomach jumping at the thought of Lance in her bed. Not that anything was going to happen. Well, nothing much. She wouldn’t be completely opposed to a little snuggle or if their feet brushed against each other.

“Hell no.” His refusal came way too quickly for her liking.

“Why not? Will your girlfriend be jealous? It’ll be purely platonic. Bring some of those blankets over here and roll them down the center of the bed. Problem solved.”

“I don’t have a girlfriend, but I…”

“Tempted? I promise to keep my hands off you,” she said, smiling that he didn’t have a girlfriend and knowing she’d have to sleep on her hands and have at least ten blankets dividing them to keep from rolling into his welcoming masculine heat. She’d already revised her opinion that he was a jerk. Lance was proving to be way more superhero than jerk. His willingness to stay and protect her went a long way toward softening her resistance to him.

“Will it shut you up?” He stood off the couch. Each of his footsteps coming closer mimicked the pounding of her heartbeat.

“Yep.” She scooted close to the edge of the bed and lay back down. When his weight sank one side of the mattress, she rolled then scooted back to the side. His warmth seeped through offering her a comfort she hadn’t felt in ten months since her nightmare began. It would be so easy to inch closer, and let her hands wander over his body, but she reminded herself he’d bolt if she got bold. He’d made it clear he was fighting the attraction between them. Silly man. Why not take what she was offering? Then she froze and wondered what exactly she was offering. She was off relationships and Lance wasn’t a one-night stand kind of guy. Looked like she’d be sharing a bed with a man and not having sex; a first.

It seemed she’d just shut her eyes when the sun blasted through her windows waking her up. She sat up with a jolt and heard a noise coming from the bathroom. Sounded like someone was in her…shower? What kind of criminal broke in to shower in someone’s home? Then it all came flooding back. Her dad, the gallery vandal, the sexy man who’d spent the night in her bed. She nearly laughed. Never had a man ever slept over and nothing happened, not even a good-night kiss. What a waste. Lance was hot, and he was in her shower. Naked. She should probably go see if he needed shampoo or his back scrubbed. It was the charitable thing to do.

Before she could act on her impulse, the shower stopped and silence fell as Lance stepped out of the bathroom, white towel wrapped low on his hips. His tousled hair fell in all directions, dripping water down his muscular chest only lightly dusted with light brown hair. He had a full six pack of abs that spoke to his dedication to staying in shape for his job, and he had those total sexy hip lines going on.
Ari swallowed hard as he offered her a small uneven smile.

“Morning. I was hoping to be dressed by the time you woke up. I’ll grab my clothes and head back in there to change.”

“Don’t bother on my account.” Her lust amped up at his appearance, and made her voice take on a throaty, breathy quality.

Cole had been watching the brunette for the better part of three innings.
Which was just wrong on a couple of levels.

It was like clockwork. The third out would signal the swap of the players on the field, and Tiny Brunette’s attention would dip toward the damn notebook.
Her left hand would sneak around to twirl her ponytail around a finger while her right hand busily wrote . . .
What?
What did she write in that notebook? And exactly why did he want to know so badly?
Normally Cole would just ask. The seat beside Tiny Brunette was free. Everyone else in the suite was there more for the networking and the free food and booze than the game. It would have been so easy just to plop down beside her, strike up a conversation. Flirt.
But for some reason he was hesitant.
Cole told himself it was because he didn’t want to interrupt whatever it was she was so diligently working on, but there was an unfamiliar fear too.
The fear of rejection.
Because nothing about this woman signaled that she’d be interested in a conversation with him.
And that would be a first.

image In a nutshell this book was about two people emotionally scarred by what life had thrown at them. It was interesting that you couldn’t really tell who was healing whom, but that was also part of the journey. It helped that I truly liked Rev and Annabel so even when it got a bit maudlin, I had faith that things would gear back up. I enjoyed the people surrounding them and the action didn’t overpower the romance nor did the recovery from the trauma. This book doesn’t fall in the dark, hot and heavy biker romance category. I would decribe Redemption Road as heartfelt, enjoyable and balanced.

“You’re such a beautiful fibber,” Cav murmured tenderly, moving his hands slowly up and down her thighs. He saw that his touch settled her down, her shoulders dropping the tension she was holding in them. “In another forty minutes, you’ll be boarded first. There will be two air marshals on that flight, Lia, to protect you. You’ll be fine.”

She turned and faced him. “I worry about you, Cav, and about all these guys. You’re going to get into the fight to get Medina as soon as you get me on board that plane, aren’t you?” She saw him give her a rueful smile, like a little boy caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

“Busted.”

“I wish you wouldn’t go, Cav,” she blurted out, unable to hide her emotions now. “I know I don’t have a right to ask you that.”

“Yes,” he growled, “You have every right, Lia.”

It was painful for her to look at him, so she looked away. “I know we barely know one another, but there’s something good between us, Cav. I can feel it. When you kissed me, I felt as if I’d never been kissed before. And you did it so well…” She saw his eyes turn dark with emotion, and his hands stilled on her thighs as she absorbed their strength and warmth. She had never wanted him more.

“Listen,” he growled, then softened his tone as he cupped her face. “This is one of the few times I want to be on an operation, Lia. I want Medina so damn bad I can taste it. That bastard is as good as dead. He just doesn’t know it yet. And I hope like hell I’m the man who puts the bullet into that sick bastard’s brain. I want to know that he’ll never, ever bother you or any other woman again. This man needs to be taken out.”

She felt a chill from his icy declaration. Here was Cav, her warrior, fully unveiled. Shaken, Lia whispered, “Then please be very, very careful, Cav. I can’t lose you,” and she reached out to him, touching his face and feeling a day’s worth of beard beneath her fingertips.

Just as quickly, Cav’s feral look was replaced by the gentle, strong man she was falling in love with. She knew he wanted to kiss her as he moved his thumb lightly across her lips.

“When this is over, I’m coming home to you, Lia. I’m sure Robert has another assignment for me, but I’m going to reject it. I want time with you…”

Nothing had ever sounded so good to her. She leaned forward, seeking and finding his lips, releasing a low moan of need as his mouth took hers with unbelievable gentleness. Lia wanted so much more from this man!

image“What are you looking for?” She looked down, letting her hair cover her face so he couldn’t see the flush in her cheeks. “I have a few hours free this afternoon, and since Bill isn’t there, I don’t mind going in to help you out. Ty…my son…is with a friend.”
“Paint.”
God, this was as bad as getting Ty to tell her about his day at school. “Do you need to buy paint or are you looking for artwork?”
“Art. Yours.”
Evie fought back a smile. Zane had always reverted to monosyllabic answers in emotionally stressful situations, and she had a feeling his stress wasn’t because of T-Rex and Tank shirking their duties. “You want to see my portfolio and some samples or do you have something in mind?” She sidestepped around him, heading for the door so she could grab her purse. Her body brushed against his and just that tiny touch—the feel of his hard chest against her breasts, the scent of his leather cut—sent her pulse skyrocketing, and stumbled.
Zane put out a hand to steady her, then suddenly yanked her against him, holding her fast with an arm around her waist. “You were always touching me, Evie,” he murmured. “Drove me outta my fucking mind. You playing games with me now?”
Her chest expanded and she sucked in some badly needed air. This wasn’t Zane the teenager, who fumbled with her clothes beside the creek, his hand shaking as he touched her bare skin. This was Zane the man, confident, self-assured and strong, with a dominance that made her knees weak and a body that made her mouth water.
Dangerous. Maybe even a killer.
No. She pushed the thought away. Even after she gave up hope of seeing him again, she never believed he was responsible for her father’s death.
“We should go.” She pulled away, at least she thought she did, but his hand stayed firm on her lower back. “I’ll show you my portfolio.”
“Saw it when I stopped by the shop on my way here. You got real talent. Always did.”
“You broke into the shop?” The warmth of his hand seeped through her body making it difficult to keep her spine stiff and her indignation firm.
A half grin spread across his face, and his shoulders relaxed. “Thought maybe you were unconscious inside since the hours on the door said the shop was open on Sunday.”
“And you didn’t think to call Tank or T-Rex who were parked outside my house?”
“I’m a man of action, sweetheart.” He nuzzled the side of her face, the rasp of his breath in her ear so damn erotic she wanted nothing more than to drag him into her house and do something insanely stupid.
“I hope you didn’t rampage through the shop during your break-in. It’s partly my business, too.”
He jerked back and his smile faded. “You think I’m gonna steal from you?”
She cringed at his sharp tone, but better to have him annoyed than sexy and seductive. “You are an outlaw biker. Isn’t that what you do? Mayhem, theft, arson…the more illegal the better?”
“We do what we gotta do to live the way we want to live.”
Evie pulled away, putting some much-needed space between them. “The way I want to live includes having a way to pay the rent, and that’s not going down if anything happens to the shop. Plus, Axle won’t be back. I told Jagger, but he didn’t believe me. He was just delivering a message from someone.” She turned to the door, cringing at the reveal she hadn’t intended to make, but before she could step inside, Zane clamped a hand on her shoulder.
“Who?”
Her heart pounded a warning, but she couldn’t outright lie, and the question suggested he already knew the answer. “Viper.”
Zane hissed in a breath. “What was the message?”
She twisted a lock of hair around her finger, and looked back at him over her shoulder. “It’s…sort of…personal. We’re…um…friends.”
His gaze locked on her finger and his eyes narrowed. Damn. He knew her anxiety tell as well as she knew his. “Viper doesn’t have friends.”
“Maybe you don’t know him that well.”
He released her and took a step back. “Maybe I don’t know you.”

A knock on the door, the silent swing of hinges, and then heat and hardness behind me, a faint but intoxicating hint of cologne, the creak of leather. Hands on my waist, lips at my neck. Breath on my skin.
I don’t dare tense, don’t dare suck in a sharp breath of fear. I don’t dare pull away.
Strong, hard, powerful hands twist me in place, and an index finger touches my chin, lifts my face, tilts my gaze. I cannot breathe, don’t dare, haven’t been given permission.
“You are lovelier than ever, X.” A deep, smooth, cultured voice, like the purr of a finely tuned engine.
“Thank you, Caleb.” My own voice is quiet, careful, my words chosen and precise.
“Scotch.” The command is a murmur, barely audible.
I know how to prepare it: a cut-crystal tumbler, a single ice cube, thick amber liquid an inch from the top. I offer the tumbler and wait, keep my eyes downcast, hands behind my back.
“You were too harsh on Jonathan.”
“I must respectfully disagree.”
“His father expects results.”
I bristle, and it does not go unnoticed. “Have I ever failed to produce results?”
“You sent him away after less than an hour.”
“He wasn’t ready. He needed to be shown his faults. He needs to understand how much he has to learn.”
“Perhaps you’re right.” Ice clinks, and I take the empty tumbler, set it aside, and force myself to remain in place, force myself to keep breathing and remind myself that I must obey. “I didn’t come here to discuss Jonathan Cartwright, however.”
“I suppose not.” I shouldn’t have said that. I regret it as soon as the words tumble free.
My wrist bones scrape together under a crushing grip. Hard dark eyes find mine, piercing and frightening. “You suppose not?”
I should beg forgiveness, but I know better. I lift my chin and meet those cold, cruel, intelligent dark eyes. “You know I will fulfill the contract. That’s all I meant.”
“No, that isn’t all you meant.” A hand passes through artfully messy black hair. “Tell me what you really meant, X.”
I swallow hard. “You’re here for what you always want when you visit me.”
“Which is?” A warm finger touches my breastbone, slides into the valley of my cleavage. “Tell me what I want.”
“Me.” I whisper it, so not even the walls can hear.
“All too true.” My skin burns where that strong finger with its manicured nail traces a cutting line up to my shoulder. “You test my patience, at times.”
I stand stock-still, not even breathing. Breath whispers across my neck, huffs hot on my nape, and fingers toy with the zipper of my dress.
“I know,” I say.
And then, just when I expect to feel the zipper slide down my spine, body heat recedes and that hot breath now laced with hints of scotch is gone, and a single word sears my soul:
“Strip.”
My tongue scrapes over dry lips, and my lungs constrict, protesting my inability to breathe. My hands tremble. I know this is expected of me, and I cannot, dare not resist, or protest. And . . . part of me doesn’t want to. But I wish . . . I wish for the freedom to choose what I want.
I have hesitated too long.
“X. I said . . . strip.” The zipper slides down to between my shoulder blades. “Show me your skin.”
Reaching behind my back, I lower the zipper to its nesting place at the base of my spine. Hard, insistent hands assist me in brushing the sleeves from my shoulders, down my arms, and then the dress is floating to the floor at my feet. That’s all the help I’ll get. I know from long experience that I must make a show of what comes next.
I turn my head, and see tanned skin and the perpetual two-day stubble on a refined, powerful jawline, sharp cheekbones, firm, thin lips, black eyes like voids, eyes that drip desire. My hair drapes over one shoulder. I lift one knee so my now-bare toes touch the gleaming teak, curl my shoulders in, let my gaze show my vulnerability. With a deep breath, I unhook my bra, let the garment fall away.
I reach for my underwear.
“No,” comes the purr, “leave them. Let me.”
I let my fingers graze my thighs, wait. My underwear slides down slowly, and where fingers touch, so too do lips, hot and damp, touching my skin, and I cannot flinch, cannot pull away or express how badly I want only to be alone, to even once have the right to want something else.
But I do not have that right.

Chapter Four

​Gracie pulled up to the Donovan family’s brick bungalow and turned off the ignition. The modest house was located in a tight-knit neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago and looked nearly identical to all the other bungalows lining the street, except for the brightly colored balloons next to the door.
​She got out of the car and walked up the steps. Today’s event was at Shannon Donovan’s house. The mother of the groom had wanted a close-family-andfriends celebration before the official engagement party tonight. Gracie blew out a deep breath. Another day with the Donovan clan, and a new opportunity to change her ways with the professor.
​As she’d been here before, she knocked on the door and then walked in.
​An explosion was followed by a sound of rapid machine-gun fire, so loud it had to shake the plaster off the walls of the small foyer. Gracie peered into the small living room to find James playing a video game with a chubby, angel-faced boy around twelve or thirteen.
​Neither of them glanced in her direction.
​Controller in hand, James’s attention was riveted on the flat-screen television. The line of his jaw was hard, his cheekbones defined, as he concentrated on the game.
​“Flank him. Go. Go. Go,” James yelled, gesturing wildly with his controller.
​Gracie had never seen him so animated before. The sight was riveting.
​The boy’s arms flailed as his thumbs frantically worked across the controller. “To your left.”
​One of the guys in military garb on the screen moved and James said, “You’ve got it, take the shot.”
​The other animated soldier dropped to one knee and shot, filling the screen with the splatter of blood and brains flying through the air before the screen cut to another scene.
​“Yes!” The boy whooped, his face alight with the thrill of virtual victory.
​“Did you see his head explode?” James grinned, leaning back on the floral brocade couch. The feminine fabric highlighted the masculinity of his face, the broadness of his shoulders in a black waffle-knit shirt.
​Gracie couldn’t help but be charmed at the excited expression the professor wore. She’d never seen him look so carefree or unreserved.
​The boy looked at James with complete adoration, a sweet smile on his round face. “That was awesome.”
​Gracie stepped into the room and leaned against the doorframe, finally making her presence known so she wouldn’t be caught gawking. “That was some impressive splatter.”
​They looked at her.
​James’s gaze flickered over her body. “Gracie.”
​She fought the urge to stiffen at his cool tone. It was a casual brunch, so she wore jeans and a black scoop-neck knit top that highlighted her blond hair and curves. She’d made damn sure she looked good, covering the shadows under her eyes with concealer.
​“Professor,” she returned before beaming at the boy. His mouth hung open as he gaped at her. “Aren’t you going to introduce me to your friend?”
​James’s mouth quirked as he noticed the boy’s stunned expression. Gracie thought she detected an eye roll but she couldn’t be sure.
​James jostled the kid out of his daze and said, “Gracie Roberts, this is my cousin, Declan.”
​Gracie walked over and stuck out her hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Declan.”
​The boy turned scarlet as his sweaty palm slid into hers. “Thank you, ma’am.”
​Gracie waved. “Ha, ma’am makes me feel like I’m a hundred years old. Call me Gracie.” She jutted her chin toward the television. “Nice shooting. Maybe later you can show me how it’s done.”
​Declan flushed an even deeper shade of red, jerking his gaze toward the professor. “James did all the hard stuff.”
​Gracie shrugged. “From what I saw you delivered the kill shot.”
​James smiled at her, a real smile, one that flashed the mysterious dimple, and Gracie’s heart gave a hard lurch. In a split second, like the sudden strike of lightning, she saw it. The sun streamed through the window, highlighting the gold in his hair, and she saw the man she’d been refusing to acknowledge since she’d met him. The one everyone else saw. The man Lindsey Lord looked at like a god and Cecilia thought sexy.
​The man who called to some deep, secret place inside her. The attraction that pulled at her while she focused instead on all the things about him that irritated her. The world swung and she blinked, taking a step back.
​Oh no.
​The smile transformed into concern and he stood, walking toward her. “Are you okay?”
​She nodded even as a swell of heat washed through her.
​No. No. No. Not him. Anyone but him. He was all wrong for her. He was her best friend’s brother. He was secure and stable.
​He was coming closer. Too close. Awareness flared, impossible to ignore.
​He was going to touch her. A second later he gripped her arm and she gasped. “You’re as white as a sheet.”
​A jolt of electricity shot up her arm. He was one of those solid-relationship guys who mowed the lawn and had five-year plans. She straightened and squared her shoulders. “I’m fine.”
​He didn’t eat carbs! Or sugar! Flour was a part of her life. She was a baker.
​His forehead creased. “Are you sure?”
​“Yes,” she said, her voice too breathless. He needed to stop touching her. She needed space to get a handle on this. She blurted the first thing that popped into her head. “I have the cake in my truck.”
​His hand dropped away and she could finally breathe. “I can go get it.”
​James’s black shirt stretched over his broad chest. Her fingers twitched as a startling visual of tracing her hands over the lines of all those muscles filled her mind.
​Oh no. Where was his geek-wear? She needed a pair of chinos, stat. She cleared her throat. “It’s a two-man job; you’ll need help.”
​He nodded. “Are you sure you’re okay? You look a little shaky.”
​“I’m great. Just tired.” Her gaze snagged on his mouth, his full mouth, but instead of focusing on what a horrible kisser he’d be, she could see it. Feel his mouth moving over hers. She sucked in a breath. “I’m used to sleeping in my own bed.”
​Expression filled with disbelief, he was clearly perplexed by her behavior. He started to say something, but Evan came in and his mouth snapped shut.
​He stepped away.
​Out of the corner of her vision, she saw James’s face smooth over into the cool remoteness he always seemed to wear whenever she was around.
​“There she is.” Evan bounded over to her and swept her up in his powerful arms, giving her a big smacking kiss on the lips. “How’s my favorite girl?”
​Thankful for the distraction from her troubling thoughts, she laughed and swatted the pro football player and resident wild-child away, relaxing into the easy flirtation. “Ah, if only I could believe you, but after last week’s game you told that pretty reporter with the red hair the same thing.”
​“But with you I mean it.” Evan grinned down at her. At six-five he was built like a Greek god crossed with, well, a pro football player. With the Donovan family’s green eyes and dark brown hair, he was about as gorgeous as a man could be. Considered one of the best wide receivers in the game, he was a media favorite, with all his crazy antics and a new supermodel every week.
​He loved to flirt, and she flirted right back. “You’re a liar, but I still love you.”
​Since they’d met he’d made it plenty clear he’d take her to bed without even the slightest encouragement. He’d whispered outrageous things in her ear. Hugged her. Teased her. They’d gotten drunk together on more than one occasion, and yet she’d never given him the opportunity to make a move. Why?
​He was a hot-as-hell, wild, testosterone-soaked, NFL Pro Bowl-er. Women lined up for a chance to be in his bed. So what the hell was wrong with her? Sure, it would be a fling, because there’s no way Evan was a settlingdown kind of guy, but he’d be the best kind of fling. They’d have fantastic, sweaty sex and still be friends the next morning. So why hadn’t she jumped at the chance to get between the sheets with the notorious Evan Donovan?
​She turned and her gaze collided with James’s. His arms were crossed, his expression had turned stormy, and his jaw was firmed into a hard line.
​Heat spiked across her skin and her belly jumped. Cecilia was right.

image imageJennifer Dawson grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and graduated from DePaul University with a degree in psychology. She met her husband at the public library while they were studying. To this day she still maintains she was NOT checking him out. Now, over twenty years later, they’re married and living in a suburb right outside of Chicago with two awesome kids and a crazy dog.

Despite going through a light FM, poem writing phase in high school, Jennifer never grew up wanting to be a writer (she had more practical aspirations of being an international super spy). Then one day, suffering from boredom and disgruntled with a book she’d been reading, she decided to put pen to paper. The rest, as they say, is history.
