Synopsis

It started out like any other morning on the train.

Until I became mesmerized by the guy sitting across the aisle.

He was barking at someone on his phone like he ruled the world.

Who did the stuck-up suit think he was…God?

Actually, he looked like a God. That was about it.

When his stop came, he got up suddenly and left. So suddenly, he dropped his phone on the way out.

I might have picked it up.

I might have gone through all of his photos and called some of the numbers.

I might have held onto the mystery man’s phone for days—until I finally conjured up the courage to return it.

When I traipsed my ass across town to his fancy company, he refused to see me.

So, I left the phone on the empty desk outside the arrogant jerk’s office.

I might have also left behind a dirty picture on it first though.

I didn’t expect him to text back.

I didn’t expect our exchanges to be hot as hell.

I didn’t expect to fall for him—all before we even met.

The two of us couldn’t have been any more different.

Yet, you know what they say about opposites.

When we finally came face to face, we found out opposites sometimes do more than attract—we consumed each other.

Nothing could have prepared me for the ride he took me on. And I certainly wasn’t prepared for where I’d wind up when the ride was over.

All good things must come to an end, right?

Except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.

Cora goes through the photos of Vera’s sister, Marie. “What do you think of Vera’s story?”
“What do you mean?”
“You have a pretty accurate bullshit detector.”
“So do you.”
“Yup, and I’m asking you what you think.”
I drop into my chair and put a hand out for the papers and pics. She gives them to me and I leaf through them slowly, studying each one, practically memorizing them. Vera’s handwriting is precise. All of the letters are the same at the bottom, like she used a ruler to keep them in perfect line. If I’d ever taken a handwriting analysis course I could probably tell a lot about her from her scrawl. Control. Vera wants and needs control. I got that much from meeting her. The meticulousness of her lettering confirms it, but while she tries to keep her writing neat, it swirls unexpectedly, slipping past that control. I’m going to have to Google what that means.
“Well?” Cora’s impatient for my answer.
“I don’t think it’s bullshit, but I also think she didn’t tell us everything she knows.”
She nods, confirming her own suspicions. “Do you really think that’s her sister?”
“Yeah. I do.” Vera had a strong emotional reaction to the photos of Marie. They’re connected for sure.
“Well, I guess it’s time to find out if our hunches about her are correct or not.”
“What do you mean?”
“We run background checks on all of our potential clients. They ran one on me when I first came to them about you.”
“You’re kidding.”
“Nope. We need to make sure she’s on the up and up and that we’re not putting the person she’s looking for in any potential danger. Abusive husbands sometimes use PIs to find their wives. We want to make sure we’re not setting this Marie up to be victimized.”
“I don’t think—”
“She might not be who she says she is. She might’ve come here helping someone else out. She seems harmless, but you never know. We have to be sure. I want you to run a background check on her. We need to know that Vera’s legit and that we’re not putting this girl in harm’s way.”
I glance up at my sister. She’s serious. Vera didn’t strike me as someone who would purposefully hurt someone else, not when she’s been so badly damaged. Taking on this task would give me the opportunity to learn more about Vera, and that’s something I definitely want to do. But it also feels like a betrayal. I know what it’s like for people to know everything about me without actually knowing me. I’d essentially be doing the same to Vera.
“I don’t know.”
“It’ll have to be done whether you do it or not. Please. I could really use your help.”
I can’t say no to Cora. She could ask me to cut off my right leg and I’d do it. She’s done more for me than I could ever repay.
“Leo’s coming down today,” she adds. “He can help you.”
She’s tamping down her excitement, but I see it in the smile that won’t be confined. Her boyfriend coming down to visit from UCLA means I’ll be sleeping with pillows piled on my head tonight. I don’t mind. Much. Leo makes my sister happy, and that’s pretty much all I need to know about him. If it weren’t for him taking on my case and helping Cora get trained in private investigation, I’d still be sitting in a cell and Cora would still be spending all her time and money trying to get me free. I like the guy, but it’s part of my job as Cora’s big brother to make sure he does right by her.
“You can do this,” she says, correctly reading one of the reasons for my reluctance. “It’s easy.”
Cora’s faith in my Internet searching skills is out of proportion with the couple hours I spent today learning how to do it. And as much as I don’t want to pry into Vera’s background, I also don’t want anyone else to do it.
“Okay.” All my reasoning doesn’t make me feel less shitty about what I’m going to do.
“We could use some help around the office. I was thinking of asking Mr. Nash about hiring you on . . . if you’re interested.”
“So I can terrorize Savannah permanently instead of temporarily?”
“You don’t terrorize her.”
I lift my eyebrows in response.
“She might be a bit nervous around you,” she concedes. “She’ll get over it.”
“In the meantime, I’ll have to learn to ignore her flinches and suppressed screams?”
“I’ll get Leo to talk to her.”
“Thanks for the job offer, but no, thanks.”
“I could really use the help.”
What she doesn’t say is that I need a job so I can move out of her small garage apartment and get a place of my own. She’d never kick me out, but with Leo coming for a visit, her six-hundred-square-foot studio is about to get very, very crowded. Since no one else has been interested in hiring me, this potential office job could be the start of an employment record I can build on. I need a job and money. What I don’t need is a reminder of my past every time Savannah squeaks like a mouse caught in a trap.
“This isn’t some bullshit charity offer, is it?”
“No. Mr. Nash isn’t in the office as much as he used to be. He’s trying out semi-retirement so we’re a man short. I really do need the help. What do you say?” She’s not lying. I’d know it if she was.
“You really think I’ll be any good at this investigation stuff?”
“Yeah, I do. You caught on pretty quickly, and the rest isn’t hard. Basically, all it takes is tenacity, and I know you have that in spades. Start here. See where it goes. If you don’t like the work, you can always quit. I won’t hold it against you, and neither would Mr. Nash.” She puts her hand on mine to stop my drumming fingers. “You have to start somewhere, Beau. It might as well be here.” Her voice is quiet yet pleading.
I know my inability to figure my shit out worries her and I can’t keep disappointing her. She’d tell me I’m not, but I know I am. I’m disappointing myself. She’s right. I have to start somewhere. I have to find something that makes me want to get out of bed in the morning. Maybe this is it. At the very least, maybe this job will help me figure out where to go next.
“Let me talk to Savannah before you go to Mr. Nash,” I tell her.
“Okay.” She does a little bounce in her chair, her lips curling inward like she’s trying to suppress a grin.
I wish she wasn’t so excited. If I can’t get Savannah to stop looking at me like I’ll jump her, this whole conversation is a waste and so is Cora’s enthusiasm.

“Woman, you could crush a man’s ego, talking like that. I knew you were feisty, but I didn’t know you were heartless.” He winked at her, stepping up to grab the cleaning supplies from her hand. When his fingers brushed over hers, he felt the vibration of desire travel all the way to his toes.
“Then I guess there’s a lot you don’t know about me.”
Like what your lips taste like, how your eyes would darken with desire, or what it would be like to feel your breasts pressed against my chest and feel your skin under my fingertips.
His mind was busy filling in the blanks when her hand moved under his, sliding the cleaning tote back onto the table. Her blue eyes were dark, and he wanted to believe he was seeing the same hunger he knew was in his. Then she rolled her eyes, pursing her lips, and moved away from him. His fingers burned where they’d held hers only seconds before and turned cold where her warmth had just been.
She reached for the handle of the vacuum, rolling it toward the doorway. “You know, you could wait for Jessie outside.”
He almost laughed as she eyed him suspiciously. “What? Can’t trust yourself alone with me?”
“Yes, of course, that’s it.” She nodded, the mound of hair piled on her head bobbing forward. It took every bit of self-control for him to keep from brushing back the loose wisps that had fallen forward and were stuck against her cheek. “There’s just something about a man in a dingy khaki shirt that makes a girl’s heart beat fast. I think I’ll pass.”
“You invited me to Julia’s for dinner, remember?”
“I was joking.”
“I’m not so sure.”
“Then it must have been temporary insanity,” she offered.
He couldn’t help but laugh, opening the door to the cabin. Gracie ran out into the yard ahead of him. “I’ll have you know, there are plenty of women around here who’d love to have dinner with me.” He smiled as she turned back to him, skepticism clearly written on her face.
“Well, you know what they say. We women have to kiss a few frogs to find Prince Charming, so . . .”
Chase arched his brows as a grin tugged at the corner of his mouth. “Bailey, are you offering to kiss me?”
“I’d rather kiss—”
“Ah-ah,” he warned with a laugh. “You should be careful. With all the animals your cousins have around here, whichever one you pick could probably be arranged.”

In response to Cyprian’s 911 call to report his daughter’s encounter with a gunman, the Boulder Police Department had sent no less than four patrol cars and an ambulance. Jace couldn’t believe the hoopla going on twenty feet away as BCP’s men in blue fell all over themselves chatting it up with Cyprian and Melissa through the limo’s open rear window.
Either the Cardenases had a lot of friends in the department, or their wealth and social position were buying them special treatment. Jace was just jaded enough to assume the latter. The whine of a winch had him looking at the flatbed tow truck pulling the wrecked Jag out of the ditch. At this rate, Melissa’s car would get off the mountain before he did. He leaned back against his Buick, waiting for BCP’s permission to leave. The police had already interviewed him. They’d made sure every t was crossed and i was dotted in his concealed-handgun permit before allowing him to keep his SIG Sauer. And they weren’t happy that he’d broken one of Cyprian’s bodyguard’s kneecaps, sending him to the emergency room. But with it being self-defense, and Melissa vouching for him, they couldn’t do much about it.
Standing here, waiting, was apparently Jace’s punishment for causing them so much trouble. At least he had his jacket back, so he wasn’t freezing. And the fact that it smelled faintly of Melissa’s tantalizing perfume, reminding him of her curvy figure and smooth silky skin, was a bonus. His attraction to her wasn’t new. But it was certainly inconvenient, and an unwelcome by-product of the time he’d spent monitoring her. If what he felt for her was just desire, he could manage it, control it, tamp it down and . . . endure being around her for as long as it took to accomplish the mission. But it wasn’t merely physical. He liked her for who she was even more than he desired her as a woman. And as hot as his blood ran whenever he saw her, that was saying something.
He admired her business acumen, her keen intelligence, how she treated her employees like equals, regardless of how far down they were on the corporate ladder. No matter how innocent she might seem, for now they had to assume she was dangerous and as much an enemy as her father.
One of the BCP officers straightened from his position by the limo’s open window and motioned to Jace, then pointed down the road. Not wanting to give him a chance to change his mind, Jace slid behind the steering wheel and took off. The sight of the bullet hole in the hood scoop sent a pang of loss jolting through him. This was his baby—his jet-black 1984 Buick Grand National—a car he’d painstakingly restored over the past six years with the help of his two older brothers and his now-deceased father.
Working on the Buick had been his reward every time he’d survived another deployment. And it was the one thing that he could share with his family, with no need for any secrets between them. They’d spent countless weekends toiling on this car, sharing beers, tall tales, and deep belly laughs. And when his father’s lung cancer had him on an oxygen tank, struggling for every breath, Jace had settled him in a comfortable chair in the garage where he could order his sons around and still feel like he was contributing to their project. “Stop touching her. Let’s just go and get the damn cattle to the trailers before we get caught.” Connor stared down at her, lying on the ground practically naked.

What the hell? Her gaze locked on the man crouched beside her, his hand gripped around her upper arm, keeping her from scrambling away. Fear tore through her body. The cold bit into her skin and froze her bones. She clamped her aching jaw down tight to keep her teeth from chattering. She pushed up to sitting, her knees drawn up, and covered herself with her hands. Her cheeks heated with embarrassment. She scanned the area for her missing coat, jeans, and shirt. At least the asshole hadn’t gotten her out of her panties and bra; still, it wasn’t enough coverage to make her feel safe, or keep her warm.

“Give me back my clothes.” Her sharp words didn’t hide the fear shaking her voice.

“Shut up, or I’ll clock you again.”

Scott and Tony, Connor’s so-called friends, stood over her smoking cigarettes. The three of them col- lectively added up to one brain. None of them came up with a good idea, but they sure could turn a bad one worse one-upping one another. Now that she was awake, their gazes shot from her breasts to her face, then off to the scattered clouds overhead.

Connor pushed away the guy beside her, someone she didn’t know. “You don’t need to strip her. You fuck- ing lay another hand on her and I’ll kill you.”

She appreciated her brother’s bravado, but the big dude with long, greasy dark hair; devil tat on his neck; and the wicked knife in his hand he whipped out from behind him could probably kill her brother with a look from his cold eyes. Her throbbing jaw attested to the guy’s powerful right hook. If he’d hit a woman, no tell- ing what he’d do to her brother.

The devil dude, as she immediately thought of him, stood and took a menacing step closer to her brother. “Your sister has one hot body. She’d look damn good in lace.” He raked his gaze over her figure, grimac- ing at her cotton bra and panties. “I say we teach her a lesson about butting into my business.” The devil dude smacked Scott on the shoulder, trying to get his agreement.

Scott and Tony continued to look uncomfortable, shaking their heads and toeing at the dirt, avoiding looking the devil dude right in the eye. They probably needed another hit of whatever they were on. Despite the cold, sweat broke out on their faces. Her brother didn’t look much better.

“She’s not going to say anything. The last thing she wants to do is get me in trouble.” The assurance her brother tried to put into his words fell short, making him sound more like a sniveling child.

“You do that all on your own,” she snapped, glar- ing at all of them. She stood up, realizing too late she didn’t quite have her head on straight yet. Dizzy, she stumbled a step, then caught herself. She spotted her clothes tossed a few feet away and rushed toward them, hoping to grab them, run to her horse, and get the hell out of there before things got worse. She definitely didn’t want to get hit again. The fear building in her gut that the devil dude might make good on his omi- nous threats, both spoken and unspoken, made bile rise to the back of her throat. She needed to get away now, before it was too late.

She wrapped her arms around herself, warding off another round of shivers, not all of which resulted from the cold, but the bone-deep fear they might not let her go.

“Where do you think you’re going?” The devil dude grabbed her arm and spun her around. She took him by surprise, stepping in close and kneeing him in the nuts. He fell to his knees, his hands on his balls, the knife sticking out toward her.

“Sadie, no,” her brother shouted.

“I’ll make you regret that, bitch.” The devil dude lunged for her.

She expected him to grab her, but she couldn’t get out of the way fast enough. His hands clamped on to her shoulders. The knife handle dug into her arm, but fear for her life made her act. She brought her arms up and broke his hold. Surprise showed in his eyes, but they narrowed with determination. He grabbed her wrist and yanked her forward. She plowed into his chest with a thump. His cold leather jacket chilled her skin even more. He wrapped his arms around her back, squeezing her close. She head-butted him, hitting him more on the chin than nose than she’d like. He shoved her back to the ground and swiped the back of his hand over his face. Slumped in the dirt and grass, she stared up at him, trying to clear the haze from her aching head and vision, wishing she’d broken his nose.

She tried to think fast, but the guy came after her again, falling to his knees, straddling her hips. His heavy weight pushed her butt into the soft earth, and a jagged rock dug into her spine. He pressed the knife to her neck. The menacing smile on his face reinforced the dangerous look in his eyes. He’d do it. He’d kill her and not think twice about it.
