Synopsis

Too hot to handle…
Faith Miller has faith in two things—her surrogate firehouse family, and her own two hands—and she needs a man in her life like a fish needs a bicycle. Growing up watching her mom get used and discarded by one deadbeat boyfriend after another has left Faith jaded, and determined not to fall into the same trap. But when Mick Whitehouse moves back to Summerville, Faith’s happy, single life is turned upside down. The hunky carpenter is a far cry from the little boy she used to wrestle with on the playground in elementary school. Mick’s all grown up, tempting as sugar coated sin, and determined to seduce Faith into forgetting all her rules.
One kiss under the mistletoe and Mick Whitehouse knows that he wants Faith Miller. Bad. After years of lukewarm relationships with the wrong kind of girls, Mick is powerfully drawn to Summerville’s only female firefighter, and determined not to let her push him away. Beneath Faith’s tough exterior is a heart of gold, and the chemistry between them is four-alarm hot. But just as he finally convinces Summerville’s most confirmed bachelorette to take a chance on love, an old girlfriend waltzes into town and drops a bombshell in Mick’s lap.
As Faith and Mick come to terms with the shocking news, Faith must choose: let fear of repeating her mother’s mistakes send her running, or have faith in the man she’s come to love?
excerpt
“You,” Faith said with a disgusted shake of her head, her tone inferring that finding Mick starting across the street toward her was only slightly less disgusting than discovering she’d stepped in a steaming pile of dog doo. “What are you doing here?”
“I live above the bakery now.” Mick forced a smile, refusing to take Faith’s scowl at face value. She’d acted irritated with him at the Fireman’s Ball, too, but she’d also kissed him like his mouth contained the last gasp of air in a burning building.
Things weren’t always what they seemed with Faith, which was part of the reason he found her so damned interesting.
“Great,” she said with a sigh, swinging her backpack over one shoulder. “When did that happen?”
“Last week, right after the store opened.” Mick stepped onto the sidewalk beside her. “And not long after Jake and Naomi got engaged. A lot of things have changed while you’ve been gone.”
Faith snorted in a way that Mick found inexplicably sexy.
“Duh. I knew that was going to happen. I knew before anyone. I have a phantom limb that tingles when people are getting ready to get hitched, and it was tingling big time for those two.”
Mick grinned. “A phantom limb?”
“Yes,” she said, standing up straighter, her posture making it clear she wasn’t in the mood to be teased, which of course only made Mick want to tease her more.
“So, where was this limb before it became a phantom, marriage-foretelling limb?” he asked, letting his eyes roam up and down Faith’s body, disturbed to realize that he found her sexier in orange pants and an oversized jacket than he’d found Nina in her skimpy dress. “Was it a third arm, or a third leg?”
“It was a vestigial tail,” she said with a straight face. “And I know you don’t want to come on to a girl who used to have a tail, so take a step back, Whitehouse.”
“I wouldn’t care if you still had a tail, Miller,” he said, ambling closer, until their frosty breath mingled between their faces. “I’d still want to take you out.”
Faith’s eyes narrowed. “Stop it,” she said in a softer voice. “We talked about this.”
“We did not,” Mick said, deliberately playing dumb. “I don’t remember any talk about your tail. If I had, I would have asked Maddie to knit you a tail warmer instead of that horrible vest she made me for Christmas.”
Faith’s lips quirked up at the edges. It was a flicker of a smile, but enough to give Mick hope.
“Come on,” he said. “Give me a chance. Let me take you and your tail out to dinner.”
“I never had a tail, and I certainly don’t have one now,” she said, then added after a beat, “As for the other…I appreciate the offer, but I’m not interested.”
“Liar,” Mick said, knowing he was right when Faith’s eyes widened and a spark flickered in their warm brown depths.
“I think you’re interested,” he continued. “And I think if I kissed you right now, you’d kiss me back the way you did at the ball.”

BLOG TOUR, Spotlight & Giveaway: THE FEVER TREE by Jennifer McVeigh

20140206-212206.jpg

Now available in Trade Paperback, THE FEVER TREE by Jennifer McVeigh (Berkley Trade Paperback Reprint; 978-0-425-26491-1; February 4, 2014; $16)! When it was first released in hardcover last year, Oprah.com raved, “Debut author Jennifer McVeigh has created a fully realized sensory tour of 19th-century South Africa: You feel the grit of each dust storm, taste the mealie Frances chokes down, hear the cicadas scraping through the heat-parched air along with Frances’ plaintive piano playing.” McVeigh’s charmed story of loss and love has also been featured in Good Housekeeping, Women’s World, USA Today, Washington Post, The Guardian, Daily Mail, and more.

With a perceptive and penetrating narrative, McVeigh unspools the story of Frances Irvine, a young Englishwoman forced by hopeless circumstance to immigrate to the Cape in pursuit of a reluctant marriage. There she discovers a strange new world where greed and colonial exploitation are bringing vast wealth to some and dire misery to countless others. As she struggles to find her place in this inhospitable land, Frances tethers her fate to two very different men: one serious and idealistic, the other charming and ambitious. When a smallpox epidemic threatens the financial dynasty of the most powerful Englishman in South Africa, Frances will be cast into a vortex of dangerous consequences—and find an unexpected, purposeful path.

A sweeping novel of romance and South African history that has been compared to Gone with the Wind, The Thorn Birds, and Out of Africa, THE FEVER TREE is an epic, heart wrenching tale not to be missed.

20140206-212818.jpg
Having drawn comparisons to Gone with the Wind and Out of Africa, The Fever Tree is a page-turner of the very first order.

In London she was caged by society.
In South Africa, she is dangerously free.

Frances Irvine, left destitute in the wake of her father’s sudden death, has been forced to abandon her life of wealth and privilege in London and emigrate to the Southern Cape of Africa. 1880 South Africa is a country torn apart by greed. In this remote and inhospitable land she becomes entangled with two very different men—one driven by ambition, the other by his ideals. Only when the rumor of a smallpox epidemic takes her into the dark heart of the diamond mines does she see her path to happiness.

But this is a ruthless world of avarice and exploitation, where the spoils of the rich come at a terrible human cost and powerful men will go to any lengths to keep the mines in operation. Removed from civilization and disillusioned by her isolation, Frances must choose between passion and integrity, a decision that has devastating consequences.

The Fever Tree is a compelling portrait of colonial South Africa, its raw beauty and deprivation alive in equal measure. But above all it is a love story about how—just when we need it most—fear can blind us to the truth.

Jennifer McVeigh, who has herself traveled to remote areas of Southern and East Africa, also drew on firsthand accounts of life in colonial South Africa, as well as nineteenth century guidebooks and women’s magazines, in order to infuse Frances Irvine’s experiences with arresting verisimilitude.

In the work place, we all know there are boundaries. One of those boundaries is Never Date Your Boss, especially if he is a playboy and you just had your heart broken. When our heroine finds herself down on her luck, none other than her hunky CEO boss steps in to rescue her, offering her temporary shelter at his ranch. Now, her boss is looking more appealing, and her friends can’t agree on whether she should sleep with him or not. Don’t even mention the fact she just learned he has a soft spot for kids and is using the ranch to help sick kids. What’s a girl to do when it feels so right?

Wow! I absolutely loved this book. I went to bed way too late because I just couldn’t put it down. This is Maggie Kaye’s debut romance novel and the first book in a new series. Chloe was planning her wedding only to discover her fiancé and one of her bridesmaids together. Chloe’s boss Garrett overhears Chloe telling her fiancé off and knowing she has nowhere to stay he offered her a her a room at one of his houses. Things heated up quickly between Chloe and Garrett, although they both tried to fight it until they just couldn’t fight it anymore. There was such passion between them. Their story was heartfelt and Maggie Kaye made the characters feel real. I loved reading their story and look forward to future books in the series.

When Maggie Kaye was in college, she and a friend attempted to write their first romance book. They actually never reached the writing part. Mostly, they lay in the sun, brainstormed, laughed, and snacked, typical behavior for young college students with short attention spans.
Maggie went on to earn a teaching credential in special education and a career in teaching. Although they never completed that first book, the desire to tell stories remained with her. Eventually, she took out a writing pen or in her case a notebook computer her hero (husband) bought her to pursue her dreams and wrote the end.
Today, Maggie lives in the Southern California with her husband, two children, and two cats that sometimes share the keyboard with her. She enjoys writing stories with plenty of heart, humor and a bit of steaminess.

PG 13 – Parents arrive morning after.
So Right with You Excerpt 1:

Garrett lay across Chloe like a tapestry, his arm across her back and his leg pressed firmly against her rear. It would have been a dream waking up next to Garrett if it weren’t for the realization that his parents and sister had arrived for their planned weekend. She could hear them moving around downstairs, talking. It was only a matter of time before they decided to climb the stairs and locate him.
“Shoot, shoot, shoot,” she muttered under her breath.
If they didn’t get a move on, there was a good chance his family would find the two of them in bed together.
Chloe gave Garrett one last lingering look.
“Garrett. Garrett,” Chloe whispered. When he didn’t respond, she gave him a hard shove to the shoulder.
“Ouch. What was that for?” His eyes cracked open as he rubbed the spot.
“Your parents are here.”
“What?” Garrett asked, scratching his head.
“I said your parents are here. They’re downstairs,” she muttered a little louder.
“My parents are here?” Garrett sat up, slowly taking in the situation.
“Yeah, and if you don’t want them to find us in bed, you’d better move.”
She gave him a look of frustration and another push that was harder than the last, practically sending him skidding off the mattress. She shot out of bed, grabbing jeans, T-shirt, and underwear from the dresser before running into the bathroom, slamming the door behind her.
“Jeez, Red. You were much nicer last night. So much for the afterglow,” he grumbled.
He heard the sound of voices coming up the stairs.
He had hoped for a repeat of what they had shared last night, some early morning delight. Instead, he had to make a quick escape to avoid being caught by his parents like a teenager with first lust. He gathered his clothes from the floor and crept out of the bedroom.
His parents and sister were rounding the curve in the staircase. His father was carrying the luggage, and his mother was behind him chatting incessantly. His teenaged sister was occupied with accessing her text messaging. Luckily, none of them had spotted him yet. He slid past the stairwell, raced to his room, skidded to a stop inside, and slammed the door behind him just as they reached the landing.
That was close. Too close.
Then he remembered.
They always stayed in the room Chloe was in.
“Damn.”

Shower Scene – Definitely R
Excerpt 2: So Right with You

Garrett arrived home. It was almost ten o’clock. Her car was outside but the house was quiet. He wondered where she was. He’d missed her. After taking Patches out for the last time that night, he went upstairs to shower. It had been a long day and he wanted to relax. Heading down the hallway with Patches at his heels, the distinct sounds of water running reached him. It was coming from the direction of his master bath. He quickened his pace. Reaching the bedroom, he looked at Patches, who had followed. “Sorry, boy, not tonight.” He closed the door between them.
She was home and in his shower. When he reached the bathroom, he could see her behind the glass doors. Stripping his own clothes quickly, he grabbed the knob to join her. Opening the shower door, surprised elation and desire swept through him.
Chloe was holding her breasts with one hand while touching herself with the other hand, obviously bringing herself to completion. The sight of finding her pleasing herself made him grow hard instantly.
*~*
Startled at the sound of the door opening, she dropped her hands, self-conscious at having Garrett find her in a private moment.
She couldn’t say what had prompted her to use Garrett’s bathroom, other than that she had been missing him. The woodsy, evergreen smell mixed with a scent that was solely Garrett to permeate his room. The next thing she had known, she was in his shower, using his products and fantasizing about him, which had led to Garrett walking in on one of her more embarrassing moments.
“Don’t stop,” Garrett said in a husky voice.
“I can’t.” She blushed.
“Please, for me?” His eyes pleaded. “You look so beautiful.” He reached into a drawer in the vanity and retrieved a condom. Coming into the shower, he pulled the door shut behind him.
Chloe trembled with nervousness at the thought of what he was asking of her. She had never satisfied herself in front of a lover before, not that she’d had that many, only Trevor and now Garrett. She released a nervous breath. She wasn’t sure she could go through with it. Looking into his eyes, which were smoldering with desire, she felt compelled to try.
Hesitantly, she reached back up to touch her breasts and stopped. Her nerves got the better of her. “I don’t think I can.”
Setting the condom down on the shelf, Garrett took her other hand and placed it over her mound. His gaze held hers while he began to move her hand through her folds with his hand on top. Realizing she had been holding her breath, she released it. It came out breathy. The water continued to pummel against them, making the sensations even more intense.
With Garrett directing her hand, her orgasm remained just out of reach. Taking control, she moved it to where her greatest need lay. “Here.”
“There, baby. Go ahead,” Garrett said, encouraging her to explore her own sexuality.
As she began to touch herself more deeply, Garrett released her hand and reached for the condom. She whimpered as she neared her completion.
She had no idea how powerful her own seduction could be. His body surged with a feral desire for her.
Her body arched as she neared an orgasm. He leaned forward, ready to take her when she came. At the pivotal moment, Garrett reached for her and kissed her hard on the mouth. Her mouth opened under the pleasure, and his tongue swept inside, connecting with hers. She moaned. When he was ready, he pulled back and roamed down her body, raining kisses on it as he went. Taking a nipple into his mouth, he sucked on it, bit it, and sucked on it again. He reached his hands down to grip her ass and lifted her onto his hard-on. She wrapped her legs around him. He thrust into her and she bowed back. He wedged her between his body and the hard tile. He eased out all the way and pushed in again.
“Oh, God! It feels so good.”
“I know, sweetheart.”
She moaned as he gripped her ass tighter and sank deeper into her. He thrust repeatedly, bringing them both to a fever pitch.
Reaching between their bodies, he massaged her clit until she rocketed over into an orgasm. He thrust into her a few more times until he exploded in his own release. He held her a moment, then slowly pulled out. She unwrapped her legs from around his body and slid them down until her feet reached the floor. He kissed her lips softly.

Using Music to Inspire Your Writing
For me, music plays an important part of the stories I write. First of all, I use songs to help me focus on the mind set of my characters. What are they thinking? It can help me push the plot along. They can even appear in the book. A few of these did. Sometimes, I use song titles to help me come up with the title for the book. In the end, I did not choose a song for the title. But along the way “So Right with You” did go through some title changes, including Her Secret Santa, Just a Kiss (Lady Antebellum) and More than a Kiss (Tommy Conwell). This last song was a great song for thinking about the mind set of Garrett. I still love it. Here is the playlist for Chloe.

Secrets of Writing Sex Scenes
Have you ever wondered how authors prepare to write those sizzling hot scenes in their novels? Where do they come up with their ideas? From personal experience, I can tell you it isn’t quite the scenario you might expect. When I wrote the first seduction scene in “So Right with You,” it was late at night. The mood was set with the TV on for background music, and Zombieland was playing. Yes, I wrote my first seduction scene to Zombieland. Now, you need to understand my teen daughter had informed me that she was the most sheltered child in the world, because her parents had not allowed her to watch a horror flick. She was the only kid in her class who had never seen a monster movie. I had asked her, “What do you want to see?” Her response was: “Zombieland.” That night, as I sat there surfing through channels for something to watch, I found it on, so I wrote my first steamy scene to the cult classic. You know, I was actually doing research on whether Zombieland was an appropriate movie for my teen daughter. I have to admit I was entertained by the movie, but there was no way in hell she was going to see it, not for a while anyway.
Now, that scene was a bit let’s say anti-climactic; basically no climax. The scene is in the book if you would like to read it. Anyway, I had to persevere in order to bring my fictional couple much needed satisfaction. So buckling down, I proceeded to write my first full-on sex scene. I sat on my sofa in broad daylight with again the television on for background noise and tried to write it. My problem with the scene was it was a bit messy, literally. My couples much to my disconcertion ran rue with my book and were engaging in hot, messy, sticky sex. I personally had a problem with this. I wanted to clean it up. Things were melting on the nightstand. After sleeping on it, I again took out my computer notebook and finished the scene. To really give my scene the push it needed, I gave myself permission to write freely and without embarrassment, well mostly. I reminded myself that the scene was not about me but was what Chloe, my heroine, would do. One little tidbit about me is that I tend to read what I write out loud as I do it. You can imagine how hard it was to write a scene like this with my two children in the house. I learned to whisper read quickly.
When the scene was finished to my satisfaction and of course my couples, I texted my neighbor to see what she thought. She arranged that night for her fiancé to take their young daughter out to the movies. Over wine and bottles of water, I read her my first sex scene. I think I did a good job. At one point, I looked up from fixing some typos and found her staring at me with what could only be described as sexual frustration. I stopped fixing my errors and finished reading the scene. At the end, she told me she was afraid when I asked to get her opinion on the scene that I was a bad writer and she would have to be put on the spot. My bad. I had never shared with her my work or that I was a writer before. And of course, I chose this piece to break her in.
So the secret about writing sex scenes is this: write it however it works for you and don’t allow your own embarrassment or thoughts about what you would or wouldn’t do hold you back. Just write it!

Loved it! I adore anything Kristen Ashley writes, but Kaleidoscope blew me away. It’s a beautiful love story about two people reconnecting that were meant to be. I couldn’t put it down. Kaleidoscope has great characters, a great plot, with plenty of action, and lots of steamy romance. This is the sixth book in the The Colorado Mountain Series, but they can each be read as a stand alone. I love the entire series though and highly recommend it. She also has plans for two more books in this series and I’ll be grabbing them when they release.

Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake. Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

Excerpt 1:
“Sometimes,” Chace started, and his tone was cautious, “girls like her, girls like she used to be who turn into girls like she is now, get a guy’s attention, a good-lookin’ guy like that, and they can go—”
Deck cut him off. “Chace, you know Emme. You know that’s bullshit. She’s always known her own mind. And she’s always been cool. Even when she wasn’t a knockout, she wasn’t that kind of person.”
“It’s been years, Deck,” Chace reminded him. “A lot of them. People change, and it isn’t lost on either of us she has in a big way.”
“Yeah, and I just met her on the street. I’m havin’ dinner with her tonight and she looks good, man, but she acts the same. And her man is a dick but he’s also a moron. So he’s no boss,” Deck declared and looked at Shaughnessy. “And you just got yourself a maverick.”
The mood in the room shifted. It had been alert. Now it was relieved.
Shaughnessy was the only one who didn’t want Deck stepping in.
The rest of them, after all they’d seen for the past few years, wanted this done, and they were willing to take risks to get that.
“Terrific,” Shaughnessy muttered, his eyes moving through the room.
“Decker, this needs to be discussed,” Douglas stated, and Deck looked to him.
“You want me on the team, we talk money. I’ll give a discount, see this shit sorted. I’ll want a full brief. I’ll want the entire file. I won’t take orders. I’ll keep you in the know of what I do and what I find. But, just sayin’, that woman means something to me.” He threw out a hand toward the whiteboard. “So even if you don’t put me on the team and pay me, I’ll still be seein’ her clear of this shit.”
“You can’t let her know we’re investigating her boyfriend,” Carole said swiftly.
“This isn’t my first rodeo,” Deck returned. “What’s goin’ down, I wouldn’t fuck your investigation. But she’s still clear and she’s clear in no more than a week. Not months. Not as long as it’ll take you to track this crew, the way you’re goin’, and stop their shit.”
“As contract to this task force, you cannot engage in illegal activities. We can’t prosecute with fruit from the poisonous tree,” Douglas told him.
“Again, not my first rodeo,” Deck replied.
“You have a crew or do you work alone?” Henry asked.
“This, I’ll be bringin’ in my crew,” Deck answered.
“They’ll all need to see me,” Douglas stated. “Contract is signed, you all work for my department until the case is done.”
Deck nodded and his eyes went to Chace. “Want a picture of that board, want the file.”
“Deck, not sure this is a good idea. You got a conflict of interest with this—”
Deck again cut Chace off. “This is Emme.”
“I know it’s Emme,” Chace shot back, concerned for Deck and losing patience because of it. “Until just now, I had no idea you’d react the way you have when you saw it was Emme. So Emme’s the goddamned conflict of interest.”
“You know her,” Deck whispered, also losing patience, and he watched his friend’s face. Definite concern but also indecision.
He knew Emme.
Chace went from the academy into Carnal’s Police Department and stayed there but that didn’t mean Deck didn’t spend time with Chace throughout all Deck’s travels. Chace had met Elsbeth. Chace had spent time with her. And with Elsbeth came Emme. So Chace had spent time with Emme too.
“Her change is remarkable, Deck,” Chace noted again. “That’s something to take into account.”
At his words, Deck felt the ghost of her fingers digging into his shoulder through his coat. Saw the dimple. Heard her call him honey.
And he knew her history. Elsbeth told him. He knew what she’d survived. He knew what made her what she was.
He didn’t know what made her what she was now, but he was going to find out at dinner.
Last, he knew Emme would not be a part of a crew who burgled homes across an entire county and recruited high school students to do it. Not for the attention of the likes Dane McFarland. Not for money. Not for power. Not for anything.
“She’s up first. I investigate her. Clear her. Then clear her of this shit,” Deck stated.
“You work that with me,” Chace returned.
“Suit yourself. But dinner with Emme tonight is just her and me.”
Chace studied him.
Deck took it then looked to Douglas. “You got a file for me?”
“It’ll be delivered to your house by three thirty,” Douglas replied.
“Contracts will be emailed to you by then. My crew will be in tomorrow at eight to be deputized,” Deck replied.
“You gonna be with them?” Douglas asked.
“Wouldn’t miss that shit for the world,” Deck answered, cut his eyes through the people in the room, noting Henry Gibbons looked amused, Mick Shaughnessy looked annoyed, Carole Weatherspoon looked reflective and Chace still looked worried.
Then he walked out of office, out of the station and to his truck.

Excerpt 2:
I looked out my office window, down to the yard, my eyes to the bustling activity, and I did this tapping my phone on my desk.
I should be working but I wasn’t thinking about work.
I was thinking about Jacob.
More precisely, I was thinking about calling Jacob, had an overwhelming urge to do so.
I was also trying not to do so because I had a boyfriend, even though he was a boyfriend I wasn’t all that sure about. He was sweet, he was into me, but he was just… off.
Then again, I didn’t have a lot of experience so what did I know?
Additionally, after my dinner with Jacob last night, within an hour, I’d called him after ten at night and now it was only eleven thirty the next day.
I didn’t want him to think I was psycho, and calling him would imply psycho behavior. Further, when I called him last night, I’d asked him to dinner, which was dinner two nights in a row with a woman he hadn’t seen in nine years, a woman with a boyfriend, and that was semi-psycho.
Okay, maybe it was totally psycho.
I didn’t want Jacob to think I was psycho.
Ever.
But I wanted to hear his voice. I wanted to connect with him on the phone. I’d missed him and I liked having him back. I liked it a great deal.
I also missed him a great deal.
And I needed to ask him something. Further, he was the only one I could ask.
I looked from the yard to my phone. My mind telling my thumb not to do it, my thumb not listening, I found Jacob’s contact and hit go.
I put it to my ear.
“I’m a psycho,” I whispered and luckily finished whispering two seconds before Jacob’s voice sounded.
“You okay?” he answered.
He kept asking that mostly, I figured, because I kept calling when I didn’t need to so he probably thought something was wrong.
Or that I was a psycho.
“I need to know if you don’t eat anything,” I lied.
Actually, it wasn’t a lie. Although I remembered a lot about Jacob (most everything, in all honesty), I couldn’t recall if there was something specific he didn’t like to eat.
I could recall how beautiful he was, how tall he was, how strong he was. I could recall how smart he was and how funny he was. I could recall how cool he was with me. I could also recall how much I missed him. But I couldn’t recall if he didn’t like chicken.
But that wasn’t the only thing I needed to know. I needed to know something else too.
Much like last night, when he didn’t make me feel like a psycho, in fact, the opposite and sounded like he was happy to hear from me and would be willing to talk all night, he again sounded like me psychotically calling him yet again in a precursor to stalker way was no big deal.
“I don’t eat it, I’ll pick it off.”
“You can’t pick it off if I cook with it in it or if the mainstay of dinner on the whole is what you don’t eat,” I informed him.
“You makin’ Indian food?” he asked.
“No. Don’t you like Indian food?” I asked back.
“Love it,” he answered.
“Then why’d you ask if I was making Indian food?”
“ ’Cause I hoped you were.”
I burst out laughing.
No, Jacob definitely didn’t make me feel like I was being a psycho.
When I quit laughing, I told him, “Sorry, honey, I don’t know how to make Indian food.”
“Shame,” he muttered, a smile in his deep, attractive voice, and if I was on an infrared scanner, specific parts of me would have shown up hotter.
You have a boyfriend, Emme! I told myself.
For a while, I answered myself.
Jacob is also your ex–best friend’s ex-boyfriend, Emme! I reminded myself.
So? I asked myself.
I shoved those thought aside, thoughts that, if anyone knew I was talking to myself in my head might prove I was indeed a psycho, and pointed out to Jacob, “You haven’t actually answered the question.”
“I’ll eat what you cook, Emme. Cook what you like.”
He was such a nice guy.
He always was.
Nice. Tall (very tall). Handsome (unbelievably handsome). Smart (so damned smart). Funny. Interesting. Gentlemanly. And a repeat of nice because it was worth a repeat since he was just that nice.
I liked all that about him. I liked that he wore his dark hair way too long. I liked that sometimes a thick hank of it fell over his forehead and into his eye. I liked that he was who he was and didn’t wear designer jeans or put gel in his hair. I liked that, even considering he was extortionately intelligent, in fact, a genius, he never made anyone feel less than him because they weren’t as smart. I liked that he never acted superior or arrogant and with all that was him, looks, body, brains, he was one person who could. And I liked that he liked to do what he liked to do, he did what he liked to do and wouldn’t get pushed into doing something he didn’t want.
Like Elsbeth tried to do.
He’d lost her to that and he’d accepted it. I knew it killed. He’d loved her to distraction. But he refused to be the man she wanted him to be and instead was the man he was.
She should have seen she had it all even if he didn’t make bucketloads of money and thus couldn’t give her the life she was used to getting from her daddy. Country clubs, tennis lessons, vacations in villas in Italy and beaches in Thailand, fabulous homes kept by maids and fabulous meals cooked by cooks.
She didn’t see all she had.
Stupid.

Excerpt 3:
I dropped my leg so I was sitting cross-legged in the couch and leaned into him. “Honey, you remember everything so I don’t have to remind you I haven’t seen you in nine years. I dig it that we reconnected and I love having you back.” I again threw an arm out, this time toward him and back to me. “This is great. You and me spending time together, shooting the breeze. I missed that. And I get it that friends make gestures, but this is too much.”
His eyes warmed during this speech and he took his arms from the couch, bent his legs, leaned into them, and me, and put his elbows to his knees, never releasing my eyes.
“Baby, I want you warm and liquid. The first bein’ physically, the second bein’ financially. You stop payin’ so much for heat, you’ll have more money for the rest of the shit you gotta do.”
This made sense.
But he’d again called me “baby.”
And I needed to address that.
So I asked, “What is that?”
His head cocked and his eyebrows drew together. “What’s what?”
I drew in breath and on the exhale, stated, “You calling me baby.” Then I went on quickly, “Not that I don’t like it. It’s sweet. It’s just not…” I hesitated, “us.”
Something happened to his eyes, his face, his whole big body and that something made me brace at the same time it made my heartbeat escalate.
“You know what it is,” he said softly.
I didn’t.
“I don’t,” I shared.
His eyes stayed locked to mine and I knew him relatively well, or I used to. But even if we hadn’t been separated for years, I still would not have been forewarned to the fact he was about to blow my mind.
“Before, we had Elsbeth between us. My head was fucked about that, about her, and it took almost a decade to get it unfucked. Lookin’ back, havin’ you back, I now know and I reckon you know, that’s the way it was. She was between us. She knew it too. And she didn’t like it. But it didn’t matter. My head was fucked so I couldn’t see clear of her and not doin’ that, I didn’t see you.”
I knew my lips had parted. I also knew my eyes got big. And last, I had no clue what to say.
So I said nothing.
“Now she isn’t between us,” he finished.
It was then I knew what the “baby” business was.
I just had no idea how to react to it because I never considered it. He was beautiful. He was kind. He was smart. He was funny and interesting and affectionate.
But he was my best friend’s boyfriend.
That didn’t mean my mind didn’t go there in vague ways, not stupid enough to wish for something I could never have, just silently covetous of what Elsbeth had. And, because of all that he was and that Elsbeth had it, in the end, infuriated she threw it away. Angry enough to end an important friendship because of it.
Sitting there, all that was Jacob, and all that being spectacular sitting across from me, holding my eyes, I finally understood that the reason I was angry at my friend was because, in throwing Jacob away, she took him away from me.
And now I had him back, but also, he was saying I’d always had him a different way, we just didn’t go there and he was going to take us there.
Yes. I had no clue what to say but my body had a clue how to feel. Warm and there were a lot more tingles.
“Jacob—” I started on a whisper.
But he interrupted again.
“You saw me, asked me out to dinner that same night, no fuckin’ around. Since then, you’ve called twice for no reason except to connect, and, baby, before you freak that I noticed that and what it said, I’ll tell you, I’m fuckin’ glad you did and I’m also fuckin’ glad about what it said. The boyfriend you were on the fence about, you got off the fence in less than twenty-four hours after seein’ me again and decided to get shot of his ass. And you didn’t waste any time gettin’ me right where I am tonight. That is not friends reconnecting. You know it. So do I.”
“I—”
“Don’t deny it.”
I shut my mouth.

As one of the twelve Guardians of the Realms, Urian has spent the last several centuries in a constant battle to keep the inhabitants of Earth’s Realms under control. Humanity needed to evolve, hell beasts needed to die, and Immortal races needed mates. Unfortunately, he found that he cared less about duty, and more about when his sexy voyeur would again grace the shadows to watch as he and his brother Guardian shared one of the human females frequenting the club. All Guardians were forbidden contact with the little goddess and her brothers, but his need for her was escalating. He found it more difficult than ever to keep from pinning her face down on the nearest surface, and making her his.

Alexandra and her brothers have avoided exile from the human Realm for centuries, ever since the Creators sent the Gods to sleep for their sins against humanity, and banished the Immortals. She has always known that she was needed on Earth. Only once had she gone against her instincts and the price she paid will forever haunt her. It is for that reason she forces herself to stay away from the only male that has ever truly enticed her. The only one that has ever made her flesh heat, and her stomach quiver with desire.

In desperate need to help her beloved brother, she will have to go to the enthralling Guardian, her dark obsession. He is her best hope to get the help she needs, even though he would surely attempt to exile her. She won’t go easily…

*Warning – This book contains explicit and sizzling sex scenes with big dominant males that like to share. MFM, ménage, and light bondage

The gods grew wild with their power and wreaked havoc and misery on the humans. Their creators, with the help of immortal warriors, imprisoned the evil gods and named 12 of the immortal warriors as guardians of the realms. Their job is to keep balance and protect the humans under their care.

Uri is one of those guardians. He is a fierce alpha male who demands being in control. His one weakness is the demi-god, Alex. She is a fierce warrior in her own right and the perfect match for his controlling nature. Although they fought their attraction, fate had other plans.
This is the first book in a new series that got a bit wordy on explaining the background of the story. But getting through all that is worth it. I found the story fun and exciting and the sex scorching hot. I like that it had a nice romantic side to go along with the unbridled passionate sex. A fun book that I had to finish in one sitting. I look forward to the installments to come as I grew to like all the characters and I am sure the whys and wherefores won’t be as prolific in the books to come.

The sad truth is that I’m not nearly as entertaining as fiction. Sigh. I am a thirty-six year old stay at home writer, thanks to my incredibly supportive husband. We’ve been together for twelve years and I still love waking up next to that sexy man. We lost our furry child recently, so we are childless at the moment. Our whole world revolved around her. Needless to say, I love animals, especially dogs. Okay, maybe not all animals, I’m not a super big fan of monkeys. Any animal that throws their feces kind of eeks me out. I may, or may not, have a problem with candy. I love any research that leads to Neiman Marcus’ online shoe department. Spreadsheets give me way more happiness than they should. I love to read, the dirtier the better. It all started with the naughty historical romances by Judith McNaught that I devoured as a teenager. I love reading about hot, sexy alpha males and heroines that are smart enough to live.

Then again, I found myself curious, wondering if Dylan himself had manufactured the hit on Amber Martinelli to frame Stefan.

I stepped out onto the terrace overlooking the city. The lights were bright, twinkling as the roar of late night traffic lingered in the air. A cold front was moving in and a slight chill moved through me. Knowing how Dylan felt about me, I knew he would do anything to keep me safe. Committing murder wasn’t beneath him and it was dangerous for me to think that he could be involved in Amber’s.

There’s something deliciously perverse about staring through the clear glass. All of my senses engage as I wait in line—the fragrance that fills the air as the fire crackles beneath the foil wrapped treats wafts under my nose, the beauty in each and every small package as they line the shelves with tiny dots and colored sprinkles mesmerizes me, the sound made as the silver sheet is peeled back to reveal the magnificence it holds captivates me, and the anticipation of the taste makes my mouth water. Ummm… just thinking of the first bite into the moist brown exterior with its bittersweet Belgian chocolate complimenting the flavor of the Madagascar bourbon vanilla that oozes from its inside has me trembling. The black and white cupcake—it’s simply perfection.

Amidst the skyscrapers in Los Angeles’ South Park neighborhood, Sprinkles is a gem tucked away for those of us who seek out a small piece of heaven. I don’t come here often, but when I do it’s for that one special treat. The menu describes it as, “Yin and Yang.” An ancient proverb that says, “Complementary opposites, such as light and dark, day and night, and masculine and feminine, seemingly may exist as contrary forces, but are actually interconnected.” Simply put, it says one gives rise to the other and it’s true— opposites attract. Without the vanilla inside, one could not possibly crave the chocolate outside—looking at the two parts united has me drooling.

“You know what they say about staring through the glass,” a deep husky voice says from behind me.

His words tingle my skin and my gaze snaps up. “Excuse me?” I stop short, in a daze, not even sure what he just said I was so lost in my thoughts.

He chuckles. “You know what they say about staring through the glass,” he repeats.

My eyes blink and come into focus on the upward tilt of his full lips. Then my eyes move to his smooth pale skin flecked with a light stubble, his nose seemingly sculpted even with a slight imperfection in its slope, large eyes with the most unusual gray color swirling from within, and chocolate brown colored hair framing his face in pieces—I’m not sure if he has just rolled out of bed or if product molds it just so. Either way, he is utterly beautiful.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Just be careful so you don’t fall in like Alice.” He smiles, displaying his bright white teeth.
“Again, I’m sorry but I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I notice his eyes sweep over me and my heart starts pounding.

“Through the Looking Glass,” he responds in a dangerously husky voice.

This time when he speaks I catch an accent, ever so slight but extremely sexy.

It reminds me of how Robert De Nero talks, just not as loud or fast. I continue to stare, unable to respond. I notice that his physique is long and lean. He’s dressed in worn jeans that fit him perfectly. His orange laced hiking boots scream I don’t conform. A pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses hang from the V of his gray sweater, which clings to his body perfectly. And an outdoor vest tops the outfit. It throws me off. It makes him look more like an Abercrombie model than a James Dean type. It’s a navy blue down and quilted one with a silver zipper. I don’t know why, but something about his outfit, about this man, captivates me.

“Number 98,” calls the girl from behind the counter.

He steps closer. His warm breath whispers across my neck. “Through the Looking Glass is the sequel to Alice in Wonderland. When Alice gets too close to the glass, she falls in and starts on a crazy journey,” he tells me as his arm waves in the air with a green ticket on display. Stepping closer, his gaze cuts from mine to the glass case as he hands his number to the clerk whose wearing a cute brown apron with the word Sprinkles scripted across it.

“Can I have a dozen of the black and white cupcakes?” he asks.

Suddenly alarmed, my eyes dart to the case as I watch the single remaining row of beautifully crafted cupcakes diminish until there are none left. My irritation flares as I glance at my number—97.

The beautiful stranger hands the clerk his credit card and waits to sign the slip.
“I was number 97, my number was before yours,” I say as he’s handed the bag that holds his treasure.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Here let me get the sales clerk’s attention so you don’t have to take another number,” he says.

I want to stomp my feet. I want to scream. I don’t want her attention. I don’t want another number. I want the cupcakes that he stole from me.

“Miss,” he calls draping his perfectly fit body over the case. She looks his way and with a charming grin he says, “Can you help this lovely lady? She missed her number being called.”

“Of course, I’m so sorry. How can I help you?” the girl asks averting her eyes from the man who looks like he should be on the cover of GQ magazine, over to me.

He smiles at me with a face that belongs on a billboard. “Don’t fall in.”

I swear he’s goading me. But then he tips his chin and a sexy, smoldering grin passes over his lips and I’m not so sure anymore. He turns to look at me one more time before he exits, and excitement flushes over my face. I nod a slight cursory acknowledgement, then he disappears and disappointment washes over me—he’s gone. Crap. The cupcakes are also gone. Double crap. And now I’m left wondering if he saw me staring at that flavor? Did he distract me on purpose so he could purchase them first? Urrr…I’m so angry right now I consider walking out, but when the clerk asks me what I’d like I settle for the Vanilla Milk Chocolate cakes—they are the mirror reflection of the black and whites, with vanilla cake and chocolate frosting, but they are not nearly as good.

The safe, comfortable world of Lily Ruckler and her fellow Mystical Kings and Queens is rocked to the core by the attacks at King Hall. Not only does Lily have to kill the Commoners attacking her people, she also has to assume the mantle of leadership, and bring the surviving Mysticals to King Cave.

It should have been too much, but she is not alone. Ezra becomes her rock, her best friend, the one person who understands. As Pearl and Jack struggle with inconsolable loss, Ezra and Lily work to keep the Mys community safe in their new home, and plan a deadly retaliation.

Their friendship saves them both…but it also draws attention. Whispers. Judgment. It’s not normal for Shifters and Vampires to be friends, and when a horrifying truth is revealed, their relationship morphs from unusual to unspeakable. Lily is good at keeping secrets that could get her killed. Is she willing to risk Ezra’s life as well?

I loved King Cave! This it’s the second book in The Forever Evermore series. I got caught up and pulled back into the mystical world of Vampires, Mages, Shifters and Elementals of King Hall. King Cave picks up where King Hall left off and the new kings are thrown into battle. King Cave is full of more danger, loss, emotion, friendship and love. I was kept on edge and couldn’t put the book down. Scarlett Dawn creates such a vivid and unique world that draws she reader in so you feel like you are in the story. As with King Hall there is an ending that left me on edge and wanting more, but it just makes me want to get the next book as soon as it comes out. The first book had steamy sexual situations, but there were not any sex scenes. King Cave completely heats up and has some scorching sex scenes. I highly recommend this book and this series! I loved it and can not wait to see what Scarlett Dawn has in store for us in the next book.

Spotlight & Review – Gifts of Honor: Starting from Scratch\ Hero’s Homecoming by Stacy Gail and Rebecca Crowley

Unsung Military Heroes

First off, I’d like to thank Cori and Donna for allowing me to bounce onto their blog to let me chat about my latest release, STARTING FROM SCRATCH! This novella is one half of Carina Press’s holiday duology, GIFTS OF HONOR (and in case you’re interested, the fabulous Rebecca Crowley’s HERO’S HOMECOMING makes up the other half—yay! ^_^ ).

* * *

When a publisher calls for manuscript submissions, I’m usually all over it the same way girls are all over a cologne-wearing dude in those lame AXE commercials. So when an open-call at Carina Press came out for a holiday romance collection, I was thrilled!… at first. Military homecoming holiday romance was how this particular submission call was described. At first all I could think was, “Crap, I don’t know anything about being in the military.” I was so convinced this sub call wasn’t right for me that I put it out of my mind. Or at least I tried to. The thing is, I might not know what it’s like to survive on the battlefield as a soldier, but I have plenty of friends who know the strength it takes to hold down the fort here at home. So instead of focusing on battles and guns, I chose to write what I know, and that’s about the courage of the loved ones who are left behind. Courage like the kind my friend Celyne has, when her Marine husband suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the line of duty. Courage like my sister Cindy displayed, smiling every day despite the fact that she hadn’t heard from her Air Force son for eight long weeks due to an information blackout. Courage like my friend Stacy “Jr.” showed, falling asleep every night with the phone in her hand while her new husband was in the Middle East.

If you have someone you care about who’s in the military, I decided to write this for you, because your strength is nothing short of inspirational.

I was genuinely shocked when STARTING FROM SCRATCH was accepted, because let’s face it—I’m a rebel, and I didn’t exactly give them what they’d called for (even went waaaaay over on the damn word count *sigh*). But my editor got it. She understood that there are all kinds of heroes, both on the battlefield, and here at home. Sadly, the loved ones of a soldier never get ticker-tape parades or shiny medals to celebrate their bravery, but at least they’re getting this book.

STARTING FROM SCRATCH is my thanks to all of you who serve right along with your loved ones in the military. I might not know who you are, and we’ll probably never meet. But I’m aware you’re there behind the scenes, holding the world together with the strength of your will alone. So please believe me when I say thank you. You’re amazing, you beautiful and brave unsung heroine.

Lucy Crabtree was heartbroken last Christmas when Sully announced his plan to go on one last tour of duty, and devastated when he asked for a divorce after he awoke in the hospital with no memory of her. She’s finally moving on from her hurt and from losing the man she loved more than anything, and her cookie-baking business is taking off just in time for the holidays. But now Sully’s back, and she can’t deny she still loves him. But how can she trust her heart to someone who breaks it every time she sees him?

A competitive figure skater from the age of eight, Stacy Gail began writing stories in between events to pass the time. By the age of fourteen, she told her parents she was either going to be a figure skating coach who was also a published romance writer, or a romance writer who was also a skating pro. Now with a day job of playing on the ice with her students, and writing everything from steampunk to cyberpunk, contemporary to paranormal at night, both dreams have come true.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

I’ll be home for Christmas…

A batch of special Christmas cookies helps a wounded ex-Ranger remember the love of his life. A surprise phone call reunites a woman with the soldier who once broke her heart. There’s no place like home for the holidays, and there’s no better way to spend them than with the one you love.

Edited by Angela James, this anthology includes:
Starting from Scratch by Stacy Gail
Hero’s Homecoming by Rebecca Crowley

REVIEW:

Starting from Scratch by Stacy Gail
This is a story of Sully, a wounded soldier returning home with partial amnesia and Lucy, the woman who loves him. This heartfelt romance was touching and at times tense as they work their way through their love and constant longing. I thought the author did a good job making it realistic and compelling with just the right amount of heat.

Hero’s Homecoming by Rebecca Crowley
This is a story of Chris, a wounded soldier’s returning home and with out knowing what his future will bring. He is unexpectedly in need of help from Beth, the woman whose heart he broke months ago. This story was at times gut-wrenching, but also quite touching. The anxiety and apprehension was realistic in showing how they both overcame the obstacles and gave in to their undeniable passion.

Both stories were thought provoking and provided a glimpse into what many in the military go through on a daily basis.
